'Madrasi' songs

This is for the person, who was wondering if there were
songs with South INdian accent. Sure, there is one, a
KK-Asha duet :
KK : main bongaali chokraa, karun pyar ko nomoshkaram
Asha : main madrasi chokri, mujhe tumse pyaram
(RAAGINI, OPN)
Asha does a wonderful job with the 'madrasi' accent.
It has to be heard to be believed.
Also, a couple of songs picturised on Mehmood in
Padosan had South Indian accent.

There is one more song from a Mehmood movie which
goes like 'Muttakodi kawwadi haddaa...' sung by Asha and
some male singer. It is picturized on Mehmood and probably
some South Indian actress. I don't know if the wordings
are totally nonsense or they are really from a South Indian
language (Malayalam probably?). Asha has done a wonderful
job of singing in a South Indian accent here. Actually in Asha's
latest song from Rangeelaa, I felt she has sung in a South Indian accent.

AFAIK, the language is Tamil, and it means "let us go pearl
hunting," (or looking for pearls by the sea shore?), which I
presume is an Indian version of a date :-)
I do not understand Tamil - this nugget was gleaned from
a post long ago on rmim and from a Tamil friend.

There is a Tamil song "Muthukulikka vaarekala" and I think the hindi
song also has the same tune. Does Mehmood have a double role in this
movie ? The South Indian actress might be Manorama. She acted in a
couple of films with Mehmood.

The song is from the film "Do Phool" *ing Vinod Mehra and a
double role of Mehmood. Music is by R D Burman, and the singers are
Asha and surprize-surprize --- Mehmood himself.

I don't know Tamil either, but if it is analogous to Kannada,
there might be a pun involved. In Kannada, the word "muttu"
means 'a pearl' as well as 'a kiss'! I remember a schooldays
prank where an unsuspecting new kid on the block would be asked
to translate "leaf lotus pearl umbrella" preferably within
earshot of a girl named Kamala. The translated words
would also give a second meaning: "Hello Kamala give a kiss"!
Anyway, the song is perhaps the only duet sung by Asha and
Mehmood! It is from the Vinod Khanna-Aruna Irani starrer
'Do Phool.' The music is by RD Burman and the lyricist is
Majrooh (though I seriously doubt that he penned the opening
line :))

Actually there may not be a pun involved. The movie in Tamil is "Anubhavi
Raaja Anubhavi", one of K. Balachander's early movies starring Major
Sundaram, Muthuraman, Nagesh (in a double role), and Manorama. (I was hoping
someone more knowledgeable would post more info about the Tamil version.)
The line "Muththu kuLLikka vaareehaLa" (meaning "Shall we go diving for
pearls?" as Prince already mentioned) is itself in a cute coastal dialect of
Tamizh and this scene is picturized on Nagesh and Manorama (an actress/
comedienne par excellence) in Tutucorin (the "Pearl City" of Tamil Nadu).
Though I do not know who the male singer is in Tamil, I suspect Manorama sang
for herself. I do not know the music director either.

First off, I must lodge my protest at the Subject of this thread. If there is
one irritatingly overused term, it is "Madrasi" as this catch-all phrase for
the whole of South India. But that is enough time spent on the soap box :-)

I think this scene is picturized on Mehmood and Aruna Irani. Did not realize
that AI was also the heroine of the film. I thought she was the second in
command.

I think the MD was M. S. Vishwanathan and the female voice is L. R. Eeshwari,
who sadly does not have the kind of fan following that her voice deserves.
The male singer MAY be T. M. Sounderarajan, I just cannot recall the Tamil
version of the song in my head now. The title song of this film is also quite
nice btw (also by LRE).
Coming back to LRE for a moment, I have heard a wide range of songs sung by
her and I am consistently amazed at the range, flexibility and emotion in her
voice. In the 60s, she had sung some softer, slower songs which are wonderful.
An example is the song by TMS, P. Susheela and her "KaTTodu kuzhalaaDa aaDa"
and a Bharatiyar song "Sindhu nadi ...." (cannot remember the male voice or
the film off-hand). She also has her share of "DabbaN koothu" songs which are
great fun to listen to. Sadly her later songs typecast her into this mode.
There is a song by her in "Thillana Mohanambal" (picturized on Manorama ????)
which I love just for her rendition. She also had her share of the ridiculous
including one picturized on actress Sujata which went "Hello sir good morning,
my name is Geeta what can I do for you sir". Anyone remember the film ????
The only thing worse than the lyrics was the actual picturization itself.
I love the song "Muthhu kuLLikka vareegaLa" since it is the union of a great
singer and an absolutely fantastic actress. If anyone could do justice to
LRE's voice for these sort of songs, it is Manorama. Some matches are made in
heaven; Helen seducing to the sound of Asha's voice being another such case.
One only has to watch "Inteqaam" to see how much Helen has to work overtime
to compensate for the bhajanesque quality of Lata's voice in "Aa jaaneja". It
is indeed a laugh when people propose that song as an example of Lata singing
cabarets. If I had not seen the scene, sexuality is the last emotion evoked
by Lata's voice in that song.
Now that I have jumped from issue to discussion to discussion, I shall end
before my mind (and keystrokes) wander again.

I think the MD could have been Viswanathan-Ramamurthy (or just MSV). Male
singer I think was TM Soundarajan and the female sounded like LR Eswari

Did "Do phool" star Vinod Khanna? It had Mehmood in a double role with
Aruna Irani and some south Indian actress. It was a decent and funnier
version of Aankhen.
It was a Mehmood prod'n. Mehmood gave RDB one his earliest breaks with
Bhoot bangla and some others. Mehmood claims RDB dumped him when he
became big. Mehmood also gave a break to Rajesh Roshan in "Kunwara baap".

I was wrong about the hero. As Neeraj D. said in his post, the hero is Vinod Mehra.
I haven't seen the film, so don't know the pairings. It's not unlikely that a
no-name actress played the lead opposite Vinod Mehra.

pairing is Mehmood - Manorama(??) and Vinod Mehra - Aruna Irani.
The song is picturized on the first pair. I clearly remember the pair
in a Tamil fisherman's garb singing this song on screen.
It's been a long time so I may be incorrect.

Help, I am probably confusing this with some other song. But I visualize
Mehmood and Helen for this song. Helen in a vampish role (so what else is
new? :) ) and Mehmood is trying to win her over for something. It even takes
place while they are lying (for some part of the song) on the roof of a boat
or something. I seem to remember this as DD cutting out this song from the
movie. Especially since the song was the reason I was watching the movie in
the first place.
Anybody can help me with what song the above one is?

You are cent percent right. I had replied to a 'Hon'ble` RMIer about
the same fact that the song under question was a bacground song in
"Ginny aur Johnny" shown in Doordarshan some 3-4 years back. But
subsequent replies by the 'Hon'ble` RMIMer and other not so 'Hon'ble'
yet knowledgeable RMIMer(s) has convinced me that the song was recycled
in Ginny aur Johnny
(BTW, the movie featured Mehmood's real life daughter as 'Ginny'). The
original song does appear to be from 'Do Phool'. The situation as far
as I can remember was that Mehmood is a Con-man(Johnny) trying to
use a littele girl ('Ginny') to pocket some money. Helen is his
'bitter-heart' and she can't see eye to head with 'Ginny' with the
little girl echoing the feelings. Here Mehmood is on a holiday with
Helen in Goa (not sure ?) and they lie on their backs for the entire
duration of the song. The film had a guest appearance by Hema Malini as
'Ginny's' mother who dies in the begining of the movie.

The other way around - there has been a few Tamil films that had hindi songs.
I can remember 3 films
1. Varumayin niram sigappu - where sridevi (a stage artiste in Delhi) sings -
Tuhe raja main hoon rani -the entire song is in hindi and finally when she sees
Kamal she forgets her lines and sings ppove poove solai poove....
2. nandu - Half the movie with Hindi dialogues
3. Kushboo starrer - (forgot the name) she is a ghazal singer - sings a ghazal
- samundar baar baar .....

To be precise, a strong keralite accent. It's very obvious in
the tamil version. He goes.. "kaethal irunthaal.." :)

Talking of Hariharan's accents, he unfortunately sang the Telugu
version of the song also. And instead of saying vesaanuley, he says
veshyaanuley. You all know what "veshya" means.
The Telugu audio version of "Bombay" was at best horrible.
I couldn't understand why Rehman persisted with this guy in all
the three languages the movie was released in.
And Remo Fernandes was another disaster in the Telugu version.
I thought Rehman's rendition of "Humma Humma" (in Tamil)was the best of
all the three versions.

What the hell does Madrasi accent mean ??? Mind the way you write !
Sometimes comments/threads like these can get under my skin.. to the
best of my knowledge Hariharan's accent is very clean ... and even if it
does have a `Madrasi accent' what's the big deal... Hemant Kumar has a
strong Bengali accent, others have Maharashtrian accents .. etc .. It's
like someone in America telling you that you have an Indian accent and
THEREFORE your English sucks. To me this is only a sign of a person's
insecurity.
Sorry for going ballistic .. but when my expts are not working and at it
is 4:00 in the morning.. I have a right to do so :-)

.ps. I have not heard Hariharan singing `Tu hee re' but have heard
Sanjeev sing it last Diwali in Princeton and he did an OUTSTANDING job.
