I'd also like similar information about Vani Jayaram: her Hindi
songs, and again as to why this wonderful voice has so few hits
to her credit.
What is her mother-tongue - she has a cassette of nice Marathi songs,
`Prem Pise' (her pronunciation sounds convincingly Marathi in this
cassette), as well as a cassette of Malayalee songs (haven't heard
this one)
Thanks !
Sumantra.
Two of her songs that come to my mind:
- Bol re papihara
- Hum ko man ki shakti dena
(both from Guddi *ing Jaya Bhaduri)
My opinion: she sounds a lot like Kavitha Krishnamurthy (for better or for
worse)
VS
Hasta hua noorani chehra from
Parasmani - LP's first movie as independent Music Directors.
Cheers!

I feel in the Sattaa Bazaar(1959) number 'Tumhaari yaad aaye jiya ko

Thanks for taking the trouble to type out the list of KB's songs.
From the list you gave, it seems that KB never made his way
out of the B/C grade movie category except for an occasional Madari
and Parasmani. Interesting to note that the singer continued to
sing for almost two decades and had so few solos. What was his
output/stature as a Gujrati singer?
-Prithviraj
Dear Gurcharan: Thanks for the very informative list. There is a
long-standing controversy about one of the entries in your list.
I hope you can resolve it. And it is an unwritten, but nevertheless
sacred, rule of RMIM that no list posted by anyone should go
without receiving at least one addition! So, a token addition.
> Sangeet Samraat Tansen(1962) 'Hey Natraaj...' with Mahendra Kapoor
> 'Kuhoo kuhoo pee kahaan...' a solo
The question I want you settle is this: Vish Krishnan had written
sometime ago that "kuhoo kuhoo pee kahaa.N" was nearly a full-lenth
song. I have never heard it. The video tape of the film has a very brief
version, less than half a minute, consisting of just those words sung
thrice. Geet Kosh, Volume IV, doesn't list it. Hope you resolve it. Is
there a full-fledged song? (And a sneaky follow-up: If yes, do you have
a recording? :))
The addition is this: There was a film that came out in 1968 with
two names. The film was released as 'Apna Ghar Apni Kahani'. The
songs were released under its former name: 'Pyaas'. The film might
have been the last hurrah of Bina Rai and one of the last sidie
roles of Mumtaz. (I believe Bina Rai's grand-daughter
is a heroine now. How time flies!) It had lyrics by Qamar and music
by the luckless N. Dutta. The catchiest song of the film was a
Mahendra Kapoor-Kamal Barot duet:
MK: jigar me.n dard kaisaa, is to ulfat to nahee.n kehate
mujhe Dar hai kahee.n is ko mohabbat to nahee.n kehate
KB: shaayad ye pyaar hai
MK: kyaa?
KB: haa.N haa.N ye pyaar hai
I am still looking for a copy for the last three decades or so!
Just as in "he naTaraaj", the two voices go together very well.
Interesting that Kamal Barot's best duets are with Mukesh, Mahendra
Kapoor, Suman, and Lata.
> I will try to post the rest including some geets/ghazals another time.
> Any additions/corrections to the welcome.
I'll look forward to that list. Please include her bhajans also.
My most beloved memories of Kamal Barot are her lovely rendition
of two non-film Meera songs:
. pag ghu.ngharoo baa.ndh meeraa naachee re
. aavat moree galiyan me.n giridhaari
Ashok
Didn't she feature in another song with Lata in 'Parasmani' - 'uimaa uimaa
ye kyaa ho gayaa unakii galii me.n dil kho gayaa'? Or was that just Lata
with chorus?
Warm regards,
Abhay
that was LM only.
that was LM + chorus only.

His? Kamal Barot is a female singer.

OOPS!... Wrong gender Prithviraj! Easy to mistake since she had a
number of same gender duets - case in point the song I mentioned..
hasta hua noorani chehra and Garjat Barasat saawan aayo re..

Yes Ketan, as I was typing Chingu and Shingu the whole episode of Tingu,
Pingu ang Shingu flashed across my mind with the scenes from the video clip.
It seems we can't get rid of them.

You are quite right about your 'PYAAS' for the above song. I do not
like to convert to MP3 as I feel it loses quality due to compression.
But I will let you have it in the audiowave format when suitable.
Until yesterday I had only completed the list upto 1966 so it could
not have been included then.
Gharaanaa(1961) 'Daadi ammaa daadi ammaa...' missed off by me has
now been added to the original list.

because I can't remember the first line (2) The song isn't by Kamal
Barot.

Let's see. There are the three from Guddi, of course
- bole re papiharaa
- ham ko man ki shakti denaa
- hari bin kaise jiuu.N rii
There's a lovely duet with Nitin Mukesh (well, insofar as any Nitin
Mukesh song can still be considered lovely)
- terii jhiil sii gaharii aa.Nkho.n me.n
kuchh dekhaa mai.nne, kyaa dekhaa
mai.n samajh ga_ii re diiwaane
tuune raat koii sapanaa dekhaa
The movie is Dhuen ki Lakeer, the MD Shamji Ghanshamji (is that one
person or two?). The movie is notable for being Parveen Babi's debut.
She has some songs in an awful movie which remains the worst Jaidev
score I've heard to date: Solva Sawan. Amid the general wreckage, one
song is quite pleasant
- pii kahaa.N
dhiirese haulese tuu mere kaano.n me.n kaha de rii pavan
pii hai kahaa.N meraa pii hai kahaa.N
And there's the beautifully rendered semi-classical piece for Naushad in
Pakeezah:
- moraa saajan sautan ghar jaaye
ab mai.n kaise kahuu.N
(Aside: one of my friends pointed out that "sautan" is more or less
untranslatable into English and remarked that truly, somebody asked to
provide a precise equivalent would have to say "ab mai.n kaise kahuu.N")
Jaidev too amply makes amends to Vani in a far better movie, Parinay.
The best-known song from this movie is no doubt "jaise suuraj kii garmii
se jalate hue tan ko mil jaae taruar kii chhaayaa", sung with feeling by
the Sharma Bandhu (how many, and what are their names?). But the Manna
De - Vani Jairam duet is almost as good:
- mitavaa, mitavaa, man mitavaa
aajaa re aajaa re, aajaa re
I believe Polydor / Music India's best-selling audiotape to date remains
that of Ravi Shankar's Meera. Every song is a masterpiece; the music and
the singing beggar description. My favorite is the Poorvi-based
- karuNaa suno shyaam morii
but the score is of such a high order that picking favorites is beside
the point.
I seem to recall that Vani Jairam was one of the singers OPN turned to
in his post-Asha phase, but alas, I can't recall any of the songs.
Would that somebody with Mr Sandhu's encyclopaedic memory could come up
with a comprehensive list!

Kamal Barot does not seem to have sung any more Hindi Film songs in the
seventies.
However, this is not her exhaustive list. There are more songs awaiting
to be accredited to her between the late fifties and sixties.
Those films are:
Trip To Moon(1967)
Lahoo Pukaaregaa (1968)
Also there are a handful of regional language film songs as well:

Note: Next the generation of Tingu, Pingu, Shingu and Chingu!

Unfortunately, Ashok ji, I have drawn a complete blank on Kamal Barot's
Meera bhajans. I hope someone more knowledgeable will throw some light
on this.

Additionally, there is the VJ-KJY tandem in Haisiyat "dheere dheere
subah hui" and one song in Shaque for Vasant Desai. I havent heard the
latter one. I think she also had one sidey song in Naushad's AAINA
amidts lovely LM,AB song.
In the post Asha phase, OPN had turned to VJ in one movie called
"khoon ka badla khoon", but the one and only song that I heard (a duet
with Rafi) is really bad. Anyway, I've heard OPN has even recorded
many songs with Penaaz Masani, Runa Laila, Kavita Krishnamurthy,
Dilraj Kaur. Any idea about that.
The other day I got to hear a lovely Meera bhajan by VJ for Raghunath
Seth, on the web. Its "man re pad tu hari ke charan". It has some
beautiful interludes, which I like even more than the song itself.
VJ has concentrated a lot on devotional songs, and I think they
constitute a very large part of her repertoire, especially in the
North. Also as she was part of the AAROHI PROGRAMME, any idea where
those songs maybe available?
Many thanks,
Ajit

she sang all the songs in the movie, lyrics were by Ahmad Wasi

explained the excessive airplay for this rather obscure OPN score.
