Coming back to the subject, let's try and find lines from songs that
we consider as expressing sadness of the actor/actress in an extremely
grievous situation. A clarification here. The judgement that the
situation was extremely grievous should be based on the lyrics of the
portion of the song quoted and not on the actual scene of the movie.
Consider these lines:
*************************************************
mujhako paidaa kiyaa sa.nsaar me.n do laasho.n ne
aur barabaad kiyaa qaum ke ayyaasho.n ne
*************************************************
(ek hasarat thii ki aa.Nchal kaa mujhe pyaar mile / Zindagi Aur
Toofaan / Ram Avtar Tyagi / Mukesh / Laxmikant-Pyarelal)
Whenever I think of these lines, I feel like crying. Imagine what
would have been the situation when a person has to condemn his parents
and country like this. I have not seen the movie, but keep imagining
myself as walking through the 'jhopa.Dii's in the small town I spent
my childhood in with this song playing in the background.
Your experiences please.
Oh yes, sad songs revoke/invoke grief. Some of them even fit a person's
life. How about these lines from various songs
bujhaa di_e hai.n Kud apane haatho.n muhabbato.n ke diye jalaa ke

I prefer one liners than longer quotes to magnify the impact..
My fav is
"leharen aati bah bah jaati, rekhaayen bas rah rah jaati" (aise hain sukh
sapan hamaare, Lata, Ratnaghar)
Also
"hain kaajal se kaale ajab din hamaare" (dil dhuundhata hai sahaare sahaare,
Mukesh, Kaala Aadmi)
"raaton ko jaagane kii sazaa kaun de gayaa" ("duniyaa kare savaal to ham

"maayuusiyo.n ka majamaa hai jii me.n, kyaa rah gayaa ha is zi.ndagii me.n"
(Jaayen to jaayen kahaan, Talat, Taxi Driver)
"hamako apanaa saayaa tak aqasar bezaar milaa" (Jaane vo kaise log then

"Duubii jab dil ki nayya, saamane the kinaare" (Ham the jinke sahaare, Lata,

"bairan javaanii ne chiine khilaune, aur merii gu.Diyaa churaaii" (Ab ke

My favourite one are these lines
"thode likhe ko bahut samajhana
naye nahin hai yeh afasaane
khat mein jahan aansu tapakaa hai
likha hai main ne pyar vahan"
from the song "dil ki shikaayat nazar ke shikave" Chandani
Chowk,written by Shailendra.
Vinayak
Mera pyar mujhe lautaado
main jeevan mein ulaj gaya hoon
tum jeena sikhlaado (Talat)
Jo khushi se chot khaiye
wo jigar kahan se laaoo (Talat)
Bhoolne waley
Yaad na aa (Mukesh)
Jaane kya dhoondti rehti hai
yeh aankhen mujhme
raakh ke dhair mein
shola hai na chingari hai (Rafi)
Ye mahalo.n, ye taKto.n, ye taajo.n kii duniyaa

Tujhase naaraaz nahii.n zindagii

Aae bhi akela

Too many Naushad numbers, huh? If I write the word 'Naushad' one more
time, I will be banned from RMIM for ever :)... So, let's move on to
other names.
6. Chal uda ja re panchii (Rafi, Bhabhi, Chitragupta)
7. Rula ke gaya sapna mera (Lata, Jewel thief, SDB)
8. Haye jiyara roye (Lata, ????, Hansraaj Bahal)
9. Aansu bhari hai (Mukesh, Parvarish, Dattaram)
Also, some of the 'Antara's fall in this category, too;
1. Hum jaison ke bhag me likha chaahat ka vardaan nahi
Jisne hum ko janam diya woh patthar hai, bhagwaan nahi
('Basti basti', Rafi, ???, Madan mohan)
2. Ro ro ke gum bhi hara ('Aa ja re ab mera dil pukara', Aah, SJ)
And the top honor in the 'griefy song' category goes to:
3.Uthe janazaa jo kal hamara, kasam hai tumko, na dena kandha ('khuda
nighebaan', Mugal-e-azam, Naushad (again Naushad.. can't help) ).

"Ik Dil Je Tikde Hazaar Huwe' / Pyar Ki Jeet / Qamar Jalalabadi / Rafi,
moved me so much, that I devoted a full thread to this song, under
the title: Big Men Do Cry (reproduced at the end)
Or consider, 'Ro Ro Beeta Jeevan Sara' / Khanwar Zaman / Talat / Non-film.
'Chhote-chhote bachche aaj tak us talaab mein nahate hain, jo
is geetkar ki aansoon se ban gaya'
On the other hand, most music lovers will cry (including myself), if
someone takes away from us the song: 'Roote Roote Guzar Gayi Raate Re'
Shailendra + Kaifi Azma / Lata
For total despair, besides 'Teeri Duniya Mein Dil' / Bawre Nain, another
beauty is:
Maut Ko Bheej Kar Khatam Kar De Meri Daastan / song tile:
'Be-reham Aasman Meri Manzil Bata Hai' / Rajinder Krishan /
/ Bahana / Talat
The list goes on and on.
However, there is a small sub-category in sad songs, where the words
are point out to sorrows and hopelessness, but the music and
instrumentation is upbeat. Listening to these songs, don't make you feel
sad atall. Some examples:
Ae Qatib-e-Taqdeer Mujhe Itna Bata De / My Sister / Pankaj Mullick /
Saigal or Pankaj (two versions)
Gham Diye Mustaqil + Jab Dil Hi Too Gaya / Naushad / Saigal
Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Qadam / Usha Khanna / Rafi
Sudhir
---------------
BIG MEN DO CRY (1)
==============
Contrary to the popular belief, Big Men Do Cry, or at least they
do in Hindi / Urdu song world.
Contestants in single to triple hankerchief awrads, include
following beauties:
Toote Huye Khawabon Ne, Hum Ko Yeh
Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Qadam Aaj Ke Baad
Ro Ro Beeta Jeevan Sara
Dil Aesa Kisi Ne Mera Toda
Rote Bhi Rahe, Hanste Bhi Rahe ... (Hum Tujh Se
Mohabbat kar Ke)
Toote Na Dil Toote Na, Saath Hamara Chhoote Na
Jis Ki Aawaz Rula De Mujhe Woh Saaz Na Do ... (Mujh Ko
Is Raat Ki)
plus many more
I don't know when this phenomenon started. The big splash came with:
Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye
Koyi Yahan Gira, Koyi Wahan Gira (2)
Witn Dilip Saheb giving demo in the fine art of dieing in every other
film (3), many 'Mayoos Aashiqs' adopted this perennial favorite as
their swan song. For a long time, municipal corporations all over the
country had to deploy extra sanitation crew to pick up the shreds from prior
night casualties.
Things have cooled down in recent years. Even Kleenex grade songs are
hard to find. But one never knows, when the next meteor may strike.

BTW, in the OP I was looking for lines which really meant 'extreme
grief' to the listener, but what most posters have come up with seems
to be a long list of 'dard-bhare-nagme.n'. Thanks anyway.
Barbaad main jahaa.n hoon, abaad tu kahaa.n hai

Perhaps the reasons why it has done this would put the song(or line) into
perspective.
Personal experiences often provide succour to the effect the song is meant to
convey.
For example:
"Dil Ho Unhe Mubarak, Jo Dil Ko Dhundte Hain, Jo Dil Ko Dhundte Hain...
Ham Dil Se Haath Dhokar, Qatil Ko Dhundte Hain, Qatil Ko Dhundte Hain" from
Chandni Raat/Rafi/Naushad has a special significance for me in that when I was
interviewing Rafisaab's son Sayeed(who himself died some 6 years ago), I
referred to this late 40s sad song and moments later he burst into tears and
was quite inconsolable. This type of experience gives one a completely
different perspective of the song and the song takes on a completely new
experience.
Mukesh's "Aaya Hai Mujhe Phir Yaad Woh Zalim, Guzra Zamana Bachpan Ka" from
Devar/Roshan is a haunting rendition which makes you just stop what you are
doing and reflect upon your own past.
We can continue to list the songs...and no doubt the list will be long but I
certainly feel adding a personal touch to the song will give it more
compassion.
Lines that make you feel like crying. There are a few songs that
always make me very sad, mostly though, i'm affected by sad ghazals...
some words that just stay in your mind... you keep on thinking about
them and they are just full of emotions, grief.. coming back to the
songs, as Mr. Bhopali noticed, everyone just came up with a list of
sad songs, and they are all amazing sad songs, but no poignant lines
like the ones mentionned by Mr. Bhopali.. here is my take on them:
Kaifi Azmi in Anupama wrote
ha.Nsate hue kyaa kyaa dekh liyaa
ab bahate hai.n aa.Nsuu, bahne do!!
beautiful lines IMHO... no love emotions or typical sad songs which
talk about love mostly. I love singing this song, humming it.. and by
the time i reach the end of this song, it always makes me really sad..
the final lines are also amazing:
kyaa dard kisii kaa legaa koI
itanaa to kisii me.n dard nahii.n
bahate hue aa.Nsuu aur bahe.n
ab aisii tasallii rahane do
beautiful, full of emotions.... sad..
ya dil kii suno duniyaa vaalo.n, ya mujhako abhii chup rahane do!
thats one of the songs that I think stirs the feeling of pathos within
the listener.
I think Pyasa (1955) had a great soundtrack, amazing songs, Sahir
always did the best job with the emotions he used in his words, he
truely was the magician.
just look at these lines:
dil me.n naakaam hasaratei.n lekar
ham tiraa i.ntezaar karate hai.n
and from the same song:
roz kii tarah aaj bhii taare
subah kii gard me.n na khoo jaaye.n
aa tire gham me.n jaagatii aa.Nkhe.n
kam-se-kam ek raat so jaaye.n
beautiful!!
Mukesh has also sung some great songs and listening to some of them in
his own typical style really ends up making me feel those emotions.
For example the song "jaane kahaa.N gaye vo din... " just lovely, the
words, the singing, the tune. Another one that I love a lot is
"zindaa huu.N is tarah ki gham-e-zindagii nahii.N"
Honorary mention to these lines:
koii merii ye ruudaad dekhe, ye mohabbat kii bedaad dekhe
phuuk rahaa hai jigar, pa.D rahaa hai magar muskuraanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa
beautiful song, sung beautifully by Saigal....
some other songs that really move me in terms of grief:
aa.Nsuu bharii hai.n ye jiivan kii raahe.n
chaa.Nd tanhaa hai aasmaa.n tanhaa
mujh ko is raat kii tanhaaii me.n aavaaz na do
saara.ngaa terii yaad me.n
tum mujhe bhuul bhii jaao to ye haq hai tumako
vo subah kabhii to aayegii (a song of hope from all this grief!)
All in all, to say more in line of what Mr. Bhopali wanted, the first
song I mentionned is the one that moves me a lot and puts me in totaly
"need" to cry!
(I know my participation in this thread is late, better late than
never as Andleeb Shadani sahib said:
"der lagii aane meiN tumko, shukar hai phir bhii, aaye to..."
ab ye nahii.N pataa ki haamaree aane ki kisii ko aas thii bhi ki
nahii.N ;-)
