Comparing the fees paid in 50s/60s, then the singers were paid between Rs
60000 to Rs 70000 (in today's prices), assuming they were paid Rs 600 to
Rs 700.

Kishore Kumar was the highest paid singer ( 70's and 80's ) where he
used to charge upto Rs 30000 per song. I dont know about the rates in
the 50's and 60's for other singers
I completely agree that the singers do not get their due in the
industry. But then there are big music directors in the industry these
days who make singers sing for free ! and still some big names of
singers are always at the doorsteps of these MD's, like watchmen, so
that nobody enters their territory !!

I think in a reply to a similar query not too long ago, I had referred to
the incident related by music director S. Mohinder in which he told the RMIM
meeting attendees (back in 1997 or 1998) that in the late 40's, he had
successfully got Talat Mehmood to sing a duet for some producer and made the
latter pay Talat the full amount of Rs. 800 for the song (as if it was a
solo) and not half for the duet, as was the customary practice. In the
50's, there used to be talk about palyback singers being paid anywhere
between Rs. 1000 to 2500, rising to upto 10000 in the 60's.
