Our constant aim while setting the clues had been to keep the quiz as
easy as possible, for that is the only way in which as many people as
possible can solve and enjoy it. At the same time, we wanted to
include at least one song that would be correctly guessed by less than
10% of the respondents. We are glad that we appear to have succeeded
in both aims. The quiz results show that there *is* at least one clue
that has been answered correctly by less than 10% of the resondents,
thereby keeping the quiz score-averages high, but leaving the top
rungs relatively rarely populated. We thoroughly enjoyed conducting
the quiz; thank you RMIM/RAMLI for that, very much!
General comments:
-----------------
Rajesh Munshi:
You guys chose a very novel theme for the quiz and it was great fun solving
it.
Manish Chaturvedi:
- great clues
- good coverage; over time, singers, music directors, etc.
- much fun!
Kesav Kaliyaperumal:
Thanks for a very good quiz. Til now
I didnt realize there were this many good background songs.
(UVR&Pavan: This was indeed our aim in selecting this topic for the
Chitrahaar: there are so many great songs in filmdom which are background
songs ... we wanted to draw some attention to them)
Balaji and Malini:
-----------------
Here is our entry for the Chitrahaar 12. Quite enjoyed solving this one.
Nice selection of songs. Hopefully, we got most of them right :).
> Many of the most beautiful and touching songs of Hindi films, as you
> will discover, however, have been background songs. This was the
> thought that prompted us to select the topic.
If not exactly the same as above, similar thoughts had prompted
us to consider 'background songs' as a topic for a future chitrahaar
by us. We can say that our loss has been RMIM's gain. Also, it is
interesting to see, given a theme, how many disjoint sets different
sets of people come up with. The same thing had happened with another
idea we had been toying with, title songs, before Ambrish and Sharda
Sundaram presented their beautiful quiz. In both cases, the sets of
songs we had shortlisted (tentatively) were drastically different
from the ones that actually appeared on the respective quizzes.
> reading the plot would put the song in proper perspective. Moreover,
> you will be surprised to find that the song was a background song!
This is an interesting comment. Indeed we were suprised to discover that
some songs featured are actually background songs. One reason being, the
presence of actual characters blurs the fact that no one is really singing
the song. For instance, 'aaja re pardesi', there is the implicit knowledge
that Vyjayanthi is the one singing, though she is never shown during the
song. 'koyi door se awaaz de' would follow closely in this genre, though
one can sort of see a figure who is probably singing.
That said, there are instances in this quiz which should not qualify as
background songs. May be those come in your category of semi-background
songs. However, there seem to be more than two such songs (we could be
wrong, of course :)).
Neha Desai:
Here's my entry
ravindra, i havent included the ans. i was told by a friend:)...so i
havent cheated(i know i can since u havent mentioned in ur quiz rules
that cheating isnt allowed:) lekin..."tora man darpan kehlaaye...":)))
(UVR&Pavan: And that friend got it wrong!!! ;-)))
Hemlata N Khemani:
I discovered chitrahar on the net a few months ago. Hats off to Abhay for
starting this wonderfully enjoyable series. ( By the way I am a big time
Rafi, Asha, Sahir and Neeraj fan) Needless to say that I have boeome a fan
of this one much the same as I was of the original chitrahar in india.
Abhay Avachat:
Very well compiled Chitrahaar. Nice theme and nice collection.
Some clues could have been short though. But it was fun. If I had
started this before, I am sure I would have got that Kabhie Kabhie
song. But even in half an hour, I could get 22. So it was an easy
quiz, which is to me very very nice. That's how things should be.
Most easy and 2-4 a bit difficult. Congratulations !!
Sandeep and Ashish:
t'was an interesting topic ....
Dost-Dushman team of Ravi Meruva and MAnchi Bidda:
Here are our answers for the chit 12. We N'joyed it man as this quiz was on
little tougher side owing to less clues. Lot of times background songs are
more sober and most of them don't ring a bell until they are really a
popular one. But the theme was good one and also unique one.
Ramki:
Some songs which IMO could have been added (and they have not featured in
previous chitrahaars) are
1) Zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam... (Aap ki kasam)
2) Solah baras ki baali umar ko salaam... (Ek duuje ke liye)
3) Eh zindagi gale lagaa le... (Sadma)
4) Gumnaam hai koi... (Gumnaam)
5) Jhum jhum dhalti raat... (Kohra)
6) Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam..
Pankaj Kakkar:
This is my maiden entry into Chitrahaar. After two chitrahaar's and lots of
RJGKs passed me by (the Chitrahaar's were more difficult than what I could
attempt, the RJGKs I didn't even think of attempting, and before those I
was blissfully unaware of the net and RMIM :) I was starting to think "Ae
mere dil tu kahin aur chal". So thanks, ... (infinity) to the two of you,
for having prepared a quiz of my level, so that lowly mortals like me could
send in an entry :)
Vandana Venkatesan:
The topic is an interesting one. You have done a great job with the
chronological distribution!
(UVR&Pavan: We didn't try for the chronological disctribution; it just
happened!)
Neeraj and Prince:
Enjoyed it quite a bit, as almost all the songs were popular and very
listenable. Nice topic you chose too, which meant that you would
def. include "chal rii sajanii" :)
Ikram:
The way the quizmasters tried to hoodwink the participants was truly
shameful. Besides that, kudos to them. :))
Preeti Ranjan Panda:
Weren't you the guys who initially proposed songs based on roopak? You
changed your theme because someone objected? (or am I mistaken? I don't
remember) If you did, my opinion is that, although background songs is an
interesting topic, roopak would have been thrilling (though the
picturization info would be more difficult - you would have to rely on
translation clues! Maybe you should conduct an rjgk on roopak instead...)
[It's possible that I am entirely mistaken, and this whole roopak taal
business was someone else's idea...]
...anyway, you earn the richly deserved distinction of hosting the
first porn chitrahaar :-) :-)
(UVR&Pavan: "Porn chitrahaar?" Another participant, who wished to remain
anonymous, said "Clue #2 could have been worded more tastefully". Our
answer to these charges is "khoT tumhaare man meiN hai, bachchaa!" ;-))
like the two participants who opined that "there's nothing erotic
about song #5" said ...)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
And now for the answers. As is the custom, the song, film, actor-actress,
singer(s), MD and lyricist are mentioned after the clue. Also mentioned is
a ratio of the form [X/39], where X is the number of participants who
guessed the answer correctly.
Where applicable, some specific participant comments are included, too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
So said Frost. But our traveler had to look down at two roads that forked
from a jail. He took the less familiar one because he was shunned (or so he
thought) by everyone he knew where the familiar one would lead him to. The
song in the background urges him to rest in places where he can find some
shelter from the hot sun.
[26/39]
Song : vahaa.N kaun hai tera,
musaafir jaayega kahaa.N
dam le le ghadi bhar,
ye chhaiyan payega kahaa.N
Film : Guide
*ing : Dev, Waheeda
Singer(s): S.D.Burman
MD : S.D.Burman
Lyrics : Shailendra
Comments:
Kamana:
Once again it is (Guru) Dev at #1
Ambrish Sundaram and Sharada Ambrish:
How come SDB always sings these "background" songs? This one, the one in
Amar Prem, the one in Bandini....?
Balaji and Malini:
=> I seems unlikely that a quiz on background songs wouldn't featuresongs
=> sung by SDB :).
=> Wonder if there are any non-background songs by him!
(UVR&Pavan: We don't know! Nice PStats-based question. Answer anybody???)
Neha Desai:
abba!..what a start...Dev and SDB...and my all-time favorite movie!
now i can be sure ki agar shuruaat hi achhi hai tou pura safar achha hi
hoga...:)
Abhay Avachat:
I think SDB is the right starting choice for such a theme. He perhaps is
the world record holder for singing maximum % of background songs :-)
Ramki:
I knew that this song *had* to be there, looking at the theme :)
Satish c. Kalra:
No real clues to this one. May be I will take a very wild guess - "Teri
jeevan gaadi" from mamta Ki Chhaon Mein. Even if my answer is wrong, it
will give you a lead for an excellent film *ing Amit Kumar (KK's son),
music by KK himself and some beautiful songs, including a lullaby from none
other than Leela Chandavarkar herself (that is if you haven't already seen
it).
2. The hero and the heroine are taking shelter from a thunderstorm
masquerading, as usual, as husband-wife. The thunder, the rain, the
lightning and this KK number playing in the background conspire to make
bare chested hero and the naked shouldered heroine "discover" sex. This one
encounter dictates the course of entire movie.
[38/39]
Song : roop teraa mastaanaa, pyaar meraa diiwaanaa
bhool koI hamase na ho jaaye
Film : Aradhana
*ing : Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila
Singer(s) : Kishore
Music : S.D.Burman
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Comments:
Kamana:
Sorry but i never liked this song. Somehow Sharmila is not my idea of
either beauty or of a good actress though even Satyajit Ray directed her in
a couple of movies. The important point is that he dropped her pretty soon
too! She gets on my nerves.
Balaji and Malini:
=> This song rates way up there in terms of picturisation. Very good music
=> too, choice of instruments especially.
Neha Desai:
and they dont "discover" sex as u put it....the hero seduces the
heroine..
Abhay Avachat:
The sexiest song in a male voice !
3. This is one of the immortal Indian love stories that has been narrated
successfully on the Hindi film screen so many times that people now believe
it to be a part of Indian history. This soft Hemant Kumar number in the
background, begins with a fantastic sitar piece and talks about the
longevity of a short love life as the hero slowly makes his way for a
rendezvous with the heroine.
[34/39]
Song : Zindagii pyaar kii do chaar ghaDii hotii hai
chaahe thoDii bhii ho umar baDii hotI hai
Film : Anarkali
*ing : Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai
Singer(s) : Hemant
Music : C.Ramachandra
Lyrics : Rajinder Krishen
Comments:
Kamana:
Filmistan surely made Anarkali faster than MEA but the quality is lacking
in the film. though NOT in the music. Even with Bade Ghulam Ali Khan
singing for MEA the sweetness of Anarkali songs is unparalleled. On a
related note Bina Rai looks beautiful (real name Krishna Shah) as
Anarkali. She had a lot of grace.
Balaji and Malini:
=> Funny that you have given two songs which are probably equivalent in
the
=> two 'Anarkali' movies, in terms of the situation.
Chetan and Ketan:
There is some ambiguity about this song. Some believe that
Hemant Kumar composed this and maybe even some other songs
in the movie.
4. Dilip Kumar had gone to the city to fetch some jewelery for his marriage
with Nargis. Unfortunately, he meets with an accident. This song plays in
the background when he is coming back to his village. By now, Nargis is
married to some third person and is on her way to her sasuraal. The song
has some fantastic flute interludes by a master music director.
[33/39]
Song : gaaye jaa giit milan ke, tu apanii lagan ke
sajan ghar jaanaa hai
Film : Mela
*ing : Dilip Kumar, Nargis
Singer(s) : Mukesh
Music : Naushad
Lyrics : Shakeel Badayuni
Comments:
Kesavraj K:
If my answer is right, this is probably the third or fourth time this
song has popped up in the chitrahaars.
Balaji and Malini:
=> Unless we are wrong about this answer, isn't Dilip singing this song?
Abhay Avachat:
This tune by Naushad and Mukesh's singing has always confused me.
Is this a happy song or a sad one ? :-)
Neeraj and Prince:
Breaking all records for appearing in most chitrahhars
5. Considered one of the most erotic scenes in Hindi Films. Dilip Kumar
strokes Madhubala with a feather -- need I say more? No pun intended.
[21/39]
Song : prem jogan banake
Film : Mughal-e-Azam
*ing : Dilip Kumar, Madhubala
Singer(s) : Bade Ghulam Ali Khan
Music : Naushad?
Lyrics : Shakeel Badayuni
Punit Oza:
(there is an interesting story behind this song which I saw in Movie
Mahal. The playback for this song is given by the great singer Ustad Bade
Ghulam Ali Khan and he was paid a pincely sum of Rs. 25000 during that
time!! Also he was so involved with the song that he had K Asif shoot the
song first and while watching the film, he sung the song and you will
notice that his voice softens a bit in the close up scenes)a
Surajit Bose:
>I don't see how any scene with Dilip Kumar in it could be even
>remotely erotic, but on the other hand, Madhubala was a real babe...even
>if she WAS a KKKlaner. Mughal-e-Azam? And while on the subject of being
>tickled with a feather, d'you remember Parveen Babi tickling Hema Malini
>with a feather while singing a suggestive song in Razia Sultan?
(UVR: The first time I have heard anyone describe Madhubala as a KKKlaner
-- it hurts :-(()
Kamana:
Very sensual picturisation.
Balaji and Malini:
=> If there is one honest classical composition for Hindi films, thisSohni
=> composition is probably it.
=> Also, this probably is one more song where one can see the artist singing
=> the song on screen, i.e. not really a background song.
Abhay Avachat:
I think this is the real chitrahaar clue. Just one sentence and the
picturization is in front of your eyes.
(UVR&Pavan: Quite true, Abhay. And perhaps now you would care to explain
why you got the answer wrong?! ;-))
Chetan and Ketan:
There is a Sohni Thumri by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan that goes
'prem ki mare kaTaar...'. The tune is identical to this
song. Although Naushad has been credited with the music, it
is either BGAK or somebody else who actually composed the
piece.
Ikram: I find nothing *erotic* about this song. UVRji, it is all in
your dirty minds! Shamefully worded clue.
6. The naked shouldered lady in 2 is now a rural village girl who has been
chucked out of her house by her husband who has married a second time. She
is on her way to her "maai-ka" and will go on to be a part of another
immortal love story -- a triangle this time but of a peculiar kind. The
hero is the guy who discovered sex with this heroine in 2, too.
[29/39]
Song : Dolii me.n biThaai ke kahaar
laI mohe sajanaa ke dvaar
Film : Amar Prem
*ing : Rajesh Khanna
Singer(s) : S.D.Burman
Music : R.D.Burman
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Comments:
Kamana:
Seriously is any one of you a Sharmila fan or very much enamoured by her
naked shoulder. Please have mercy on me.
Balaji and Malini:
=> Probably a rarity! SDB singing for RDB (officially, that is)
Ashish: Somehow the humor(?) in the second clue got transformed to
being kinda cheap here and left particularly bad taste in
mouth ... perhaps ... my humor nerves are dead or perhaps I am
too uptight ....
7. A simpleton from a village lands up in the servants quarters of a
Bengali zamindar's house. In the middle of the night, he hears this song
which kind of envelopes the zamindar's bungalow. The song is a desperate
plea -- urging someone to come back. The simpleton finds from his host that
Choti Bahu is singing the song. This is from one of the classics of one of
the greatest film makers in Indian cinema.
[31/39]
Song : diye bhuje bhuje, nainaa thake thake
piyaa dheere dheere chale aao
koii duur se aavaaaz de chale aao
Film : Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam
*ing : Meena Kumari,Guru Dutt, Waheeda
Singer(s) : Geeta Dutt
Music : Hemant Kumar
Lyrics : Shakeel Badayuni
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> Great work by Abraar Alvi and memorable performances by Guru Dutt,
Rehman, Wahida Rehman. Not to mention that immortal character play by Meena
Kumaari as Chhoti Bahu. There are few characters who still live in people's
usually weak memory; but this and other few (Saigal as Devdas, also Dilip
Kumar, Amjad Khan as Gabbar, Madhubala as Anarkali, Prithviraj as Akbar and
Sikandar, Sohrab Modi as Poras, Lalita Pawar as Mrs D'Souza etc.) are still
living in public memories. It was only Geeta who could do justice to such
songs. None other, not even Lata. In my scheme of things Geeta is an inch
ahead of Lata.
Surajit Bose:
>You know, it's almost unfortunate in a sense that Hemantda should have been
>such a successful singer, because it overshadows his achievement as an MD
Kamana:
Awaaz to humen deni chahiye. Meena ji kaash aap aa sakti hamare beech
Neha Desai:
another great combo...Meena Kumari...Geeta Dutt and SDB....
fantastic song with a haunting melancholy...
Abhay Avachat:
NO IDEA :-<( There goes my Gold medal.
8. If not for the picturization of this song, one could easily mistake it
to be the song described in 2 (naked shouldered lady and all). This song
appears in the background, while the heroine is being wheeled into the
labor ward. As it happens, she gives birth to twins, which seems strangely
(ir)relevant in this very recent movie about communal (dis)harmony. The
movie was almost banned, because of political reasons, and its name should
probably be changed now, for similar reasons. The film featured a strange
pair -- a hero from a southern state, and a heroine from a Himalayan
kingdom. There's a lot of noise and halla-gulla in this song, though it
preaches communal harmony because God is the same for everyone of us.
[27/39]
Song : dil huaa hai diivaanaa, jhuum Uthaa hai mastaanaa
halla gulla hulla gullaa
Film : Bombay
*ing : Arvind Swamy, Manisha Koirala
Singer(s) : Pallavi, Anupama, Shoba, Noel and Srinivas
Music : A.R.Rehman
Lyrics : Mehboob
Comments:
UVR and Pavan:
Several participants answered this question specifying just "halla gulla"
as the song lyrics (just those two words). We decided to give no credit to
such answers (even if they had guessed the film name correct) for the
simple reason that these two words are clearly mentioned in the clue
itself. We are sorry if anybody is contemplating suicide because of this
... ;-)
Snehal Oza:
SNE> This one os from Mumbai (well, I know Bombay is right name :)).
Unfortunately, in south you don't get to see Hindi version. I had to
see Tamil (original) version. And you know asking a poor Gujarati,
"Which song" who can't even distinguish between
Tamil/Kannad/Telugu/Malyalam is like asking a 3 year old kid to prove
some theorem involving Calculus :)
(Snehal, I think I saw both the Tamil and Hindi versions in Lido ...)
Kamana:
One of the bad films of Mani Ratnam. I would prefer "in aankhon ka tu taara
hai, mujhe jaan se tu pyaara hai" another background song from "Dalpati"
which is at least an honest comercial film. Was this included to have
Manisha's presence in the quiz?
Satish Subramanian:
Classic case of inappropriate background music.
Abhay Avachat:
hulla-gulla hulla-gulla ... uparwala jab ek hai sabka ..
You should give me a point for that. It's too difficult to
make out the lyrics of ARRehaman song, let alone remember it.
(UVR&Pavan: Yes, you did get a point for this, Abhay)
9. Here is a song for no actor ! It's a background song, which perhaps has
no relation to the scene. Quite surprising, as the movie was by the great
B.R.Chopra and lyrics by Sahir. Music by OPNayyar. Dilip and Ajit are
friends, both in love with Vajayantimala. In the Mandir, she is going to
offer flowers. If she offers yellow flowers, then she will be Dilip's,
otherwise Ajit will win her. So was their pact. But Dilip's sister changes
the flowers to make Ajit loose. She loves Ajit, so you see it was a
rectangle, and not a tringle. Ajit feels cheated and the rivalry
starts. Anyway, this has nothing to do with the lyrics. So guess the movie
name, and try to figure out this Bhajan. And trust God, He might be late in
doing justice to the quiz participants, but He always does it in the end.
[32/39]
Song : aanaa hai to aa raah mein kuch pher nahiin hai
bhagavaan kaa ghar der hai andher nahiin hai
Film : Naya Daur
*ing : Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala
Singer(s) : Rafi
Music : O.P.Nayyar
Lyrics : Sahir
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> Ana Hai To Aa Raah Me Kuchh Fer Nahi Hai - Naya Daur
I wish my answer is wrong!! I can't believe such a beautiful song has such
an ordinary screenplay associated with it. Oh, NO :(
Balaji and Malini:
=> This is certainly not a background song, by any stretch of imagination.
=> At the beginning of the song, one can distinctly see an old man
=> (standing on a rock outside the temple) singing.
Surajit Bose:
And for the truly literate: the whole scenario of a woman
going to a temple with two guys anxiously battling it out over who gets
her seems stolen from Chaucer's The Knight's Tale--one of the
Canterbury Tales....yeah right; BR Chopra reads middle english
narratives :-)
Abhay Avachat:
You really want me to answer that ? Heh ? :-)
Ramki:
Why did you have to repeat the clue from the Rafi chitrahaar
verbatim? :((
(UVR&Pavan: You're perhaps the only participant other than Abha to have
explicitly mentioned this "discovery") ;-))
10. Its a vidaaI song in the background. But it is not the father or the
mother or even the sakhi-saheli-s that are the singers of the song. The
hero is in a shawl distancing himself from the crowd and Suchitra Sen is
turning back with moist eyes but with feet reluctantly moving forward. Even
for a background song, this combination of the singer-hero and the
singer-MD is a rather unusual one. The name of the movie bears some
relation to the name of the movie in 8, for it should also be changed for
the same reasons.
[37/39]
Song : chal rii sajanii ab kyaa soche
kajaraa naa beh jaaye rote rote
Film : Bombai Ka Babu
*ing : Dev Anand, Suchitra Sen
Singer(s) : Mukesh
Music : S.D.Burman
Lyrics : Majrooh
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> I can't agree on your observation regarding SDB-Mukesh. They have
quite a few films together: Vidya, Shabnam, Bambai Ka Babu, Bandini, Kati
Patang (or was it RD ?), Chupke Chupke, Dr. Vidya (See they started with
Vidya and ended up getting Dr.et in respected fields :)) Yes, Dev-Mukesh
combination is unusual, but this was not first of it's kind. It started way
back in 1948 for Vidya. Also in Shayar (1949) Mukesh sung for him. [ Not
sure of Shayar, though ]
Surajit Bose:
Isn't Suchitra Sen infinitely sexier than Moon Moon? Beauty beats glitz
any time.
Kamana:
You could have avoided this one because it appeared in C#11. I do not
mind because once again it is (Guru) Dev.
Neha Desai:
(mere quiz se uthhaya:)...one of the best background songs ever...
mukesh sounds extra-ordinarily melodious...aur phir SDB ka music hai tou
aur kya chahiye:)..Suchitra Sen looks awesome in this song...
the best stanza is :
"dulhan banke gori khadi hai..koi nahi apna..kaisi ghadi hai...
koi yahan...koi wahan..koi kahan re...."
Abhay Avachat:
RMIM's fav Mukesh song for Dev ;-)
Ramki:
I think I'll vote this as the most popular Chithraar song ever :)
11. This song is about a short story to be narrated in this movie that
begins and ends on the railway platform, and this song is right in the
beginning of the movie. The picturization of the song has a train snaking
through some hill regions as the credits for the movie rolls on the screen.
The main female protagonist of the film has a very unusual character --
very independent, yet insecure. Wanting to be loved, yet not wanting to be
shackled ... in short, a character only intelligible to a heavily
intellectual poet like Gulzar. Like there is this scene in the film where
she goes and buys a kid off the street. When she brings it back, the hero
tells her to give it back, because buying kids is a crime. And she says,
she wants a kid. When he suggests marriage, she says "forget it. Just for
a kid, who wants to get into that kind of a jhamelaa?" A very sensitively
handled and beautifully picturised film directed by the lyricist himself.
[26/39]
Song : chotii si kahaanii se, baarisho.n kii paani se
saarii vaadii bhar gayii..
Film : Ijaazat
*ing : Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha
Singer(s) : Asha
Music : R.D.Burman
Lyrics : Gulzar

Snehal Oza:
SNE> But wondering, how can one expect to be loved on a Railway
Platform, and in particular when feeling insecure *and* in our kind of
society! :-) Only G can come with that kind of movie :)
Kamana:
exceptional photography by Ashok Mehta
Balaji and Malini:
=> A must see movie, and the songs do not at all interfere with the flow
=> as is the case in many other [Gulzar] movies.
12. Supriya Pathak is a unwed woman who goes to bed with a married man and
like any other unmarried woman in Indian films gets pregnant in just one
encounter. Does she panic and commit suicide? No, she bears a male child
and tries to raise him. But she dies due to natural circumstances and the
resposibility of raising the child falls on his biological father. This
causes a lot of disturbance in the otherwise calm and happy life of the
father. This background song is when the father is leaves the kid in a
boarding school. He is kind of confused with mixed feelings of paternal
affection and the responsibility of keeping his family happy. The song is
an informal conversation the father is having with life as he watches his
happy son in some hilly regions where the boarding school is situated.

Song : tujhase naaraaz nahiin zindagii hairaan huu.n mai.n
Film : Masoom
*ing : Naseer, Shabana, Urmila Matondkar
Singer(s) : Anup Goshal
Music : R.D.Burman
Lyrics : Gulzar
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> I have seen this film, I suppose. BUT ... :) Need to upgrade to 32MB :)
Neha Desai:
This version is by some guy called "Anoop Ghosal". who is this guy aur
kya ek gaane ke liye Bollywood aaya tha...he has done a good job...ya
phir maybe the lyrics and music overpower his singing...well..the result
is a excellent song...
13. Guru Dutt was perhaps one of the few men in the film world who were as
misunderstood in real life as they were in their films. In this song from
his supposedly autobiographical movie, Guru Dutt seems to be lamenting this
very fact. He walks up and down through the dusty rooms and corridors of
the abandoned studio that was once his prized workplace, which all his
friends and colleagues have deserted one by one, stating bitterly that he's
seen all that's to be seen of the transient friendships of the world.

Song : dekhii zamaane kii yaarii, bichade sabii baarii baarii
Film : Kaagaz Ke Phool
*ing : Guru Dutt, Waheeda
Singer(s) : Rafi
Music : S.D.Burman
Lyrics : Kaifi Azmi
Comments:
Kamana:
He dies in the chair of the director. That was classic!!!!
Neha Desai:
fantastic song..again its SDB:)...and Rafi...aur GuruDutt...aur kya
chahiye movie ke liye:)
Abhay Avachat:
And to say that Rafi wasn't good at sad songs ...
(UVR: kaun kahtaa hai aisaa? zaraa baahar to aaye ... ;-))
14. You just cannot count the number of self-sacrificing women in Hindi
Films. On this occasion, it is Madhubala who is drugging the hero so that
she can be taken away from him for his own good. She hopes that God will
take care of him when she is away. Her feelings are expressed by this
background song sung by Lata in raag Yaman.
[22/39]
Song : khudaa nigehbaan ho tumhaaraa
dhaDakate dil kaa payaam le lo
Film : Mughal-e-Azam
*ing : Dilip Kumar, Nargis
Singer(s) : Lata
Music : Naushad
Lyrics : Shakeel Badayuni
Comments:
Balaji and Malini:
=> Raag yaman taken with a pinch of salt, maybe :)
=> Extremely nice composition, though, sung very well, too.
Anonymous:
waise...ur opening line sounds very sexist:)...woh tou kya hai ki by
nature women are "self-sacrificing...(this is off-record):))
[UVR&Pavan: Contrast this with ...]
Neeraj and Prince:
You got it all wrong.... It is not the number of self-sacrificing WOMEN but
the number of DIRECTORS and STORY-WRITERS that want to PORTRAY the
self-sacrificing women.........
15. Farooque Sheikh has left his wife Smita Patil in the village and has
come to Bombay looking for a job. He finally manages to get a job as a
taxi-driver and he is trapped in an catch-22 type situation. He cannot call
his wife over as he does not make enough money to support both of them in
Bombay. He cannot return to the village either as he would be jobless there
and they would starve. This Suresh Wadkar Ghazal is in the background as
he is driving his taxi in the streets of Mumbai, talks about the flood of
tears flowing from the eyes and the fires blazing in the heart. Not a
main-stream film.
[33/39]
Song : seene me.n jalan, aankho.n me.n toofaan sa kyuu.N hai
Film : Gaman
*ing : Farookh Sheikh, Smita Patil
Singer(s) : Suresh Wadkar
Music : Jaidev
Lyrics : Shahryar
Comments:
Balaji and Malini:
=> Probably one the best of Suresh Wadkar. Nice score by Jaidev in the
=> twilight of his career.
16. This song really needs no description, featuring as it has in every
"This-lyricist-is-better-than-that-one." war on RMIM since time immemorial.
Despite the blatant plagiarism evident in the lyrics, however, this song is
one of the songs with the most vivid imagery about memories and seasons --
especially when one considers that it's been penned by the lyricist whose
repertiore of metaphors consists mainly of empty vessels (that make much
noise?)!
For those who have managed to be dumb enough to be unable to guess the song
yet, here's a note on the picturization: here's Sanjeev Kumar wandering
listlessly through some sylvan glades in the Paradise State of India,
searching for past days of leisure.
[38/39]
Song : dil Dhuu.NDhataa hai, phir vahii, fursat ke raat din
Film : Mausam
*ing : Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila
Singer(s) : Bhupinder
Music : madan Mohan
Lyrics : Gulzar
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> A very good effort by G. I like his symbolism here - very
balanced and quite sensibal. But I have a complain. This clue can be
advantageous to old RMIMers. Although, you have given more clues below
for novice participant, IMO, should avoid such (read above) clue.
Balaji and Malini:
=> Is this the only instance where the same song appears in more than one
=> tune within a movie?
Neha Desai:
:(( at ur clue:(((how dare u say such things for GULZAR!!!:((
(i am sure this was UVR's work:))
Abhay Avachat:
I have strong objections. Blatant Plagiarism ? I always thought Gulzar
openly said about his using GHalib's sher as an inspiration.
(UVR: He says: "misr'a GHalib kaa hai, kaifiyyat sabki apni ..." But
I say, by attaching disclaimers, does stealing become pardonable?)
Satish Kalra:
Starting songs and ghazals with 'shers' from a past famous shaayar is an
age old practice, especially in India and Pakistan. Some of the recent
qawallis by the world famous Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan are examples, too.
17. Another song, another time, another pair of actors, but again the
sylvan valleys and glades ... This time, the disembodied voice of the
heroine is calling out to her beloved. "I've been right here waiting for
you" she seems to be saying (no, she's not the feminine incarnation of
Richard Marx at all) "for so long that ..." It's the hero who's seen on the
screen, however, during this Lata-sings-for-Salil-da song from one of Bimal
Roy socially irrelevant (and hence commercially successful) films.
[37/39]
Song : main to kab se khaDii is paar,
ye akhiyaa.N thak gaye panth nihaar
aa jaa re pardesii
Film : Madhumati
*ing : Dilip Kumar, Vyjayantimala
Singer(s) : Lata
Music : Salil Choudary
Lyrics : Shailendra
Comments:
Kamana:
Madhumati even though it was not a social has its own charm and it is
unfair for you to say that since it is NOT a social it succeeded
Neha Desai:
not worth a comment:)
18. This song was the center of some colourful discussion on RMIM a couple
of months ago, presumably because of the unlikely combination of Anil
Kapoor on the screen and a popular Ghazal singer behind it. Touted as a
Ghazal, though in reality it is a nazm, this is the title song of the film
in two respects -- it not only contains the movie name in it, it also plays
in the background while the credits are flashing on the screen and Anil
Kapoor is sitting in the back seat of a "chaffeur-driven car" (actually a
taxicab) through the dimly-lit streets of Mumbai. Anil's wanderlust has
made him an aimless wanderer in this world. The street-lights
intermittently flash on AK's face, creating a very art-film-like effect in
this commercial film that bombed at the box office.
[7/39]
Song : chamakate chaa.Nd ko TuuTaa huaa taaraa
Film : aavaaragii
*ing : Anil Kapoor
Singer(s) : Ghulam Ali
Music : Ghulam Ali
Lyrics : ??
Comments:
Anand:
The request for lyrics was posted by me. It was responded to by Sangeeta
Thakur and later on some corrections were made. That is the story of the
RMIM article you refer to -:)
Ambrish and Sharada:
A "nil" "Crap"oor - Don't even want to watch his movie to be able to get
the song.... :)) Pains me to see a talented actor like him, waste his time
in the nonsense dished out by Bollywood.
19. There aren't many films with two title songs. This song is from
one of those rare films, but hang on! this is not even the "other"
title song, though this fairly recent movie is credited with being the
"other" movie that helped bring back the "age of musical romance" into
Hindi filmdom. You could easily mistake the song to have been MD'd by
one of the MD pairs. The "muscle-man" Khan (who does 2-3 push-ups in
every movie he stars in) is toiling it out in the beating sun to keep
his end of the bargain with the heroine's father to earn the requisite
amount of Rs. X through the sweat of his own brow (though how he can
exactly achieve it by working as a construction laborer is a secret
known only to Hindi film producer-directors) while the heroine looks
upon him with lovelorn eyes and a horribly screeching female voice
belts out this song in the background.
[19/39]
Song : kahe tose sajanaa
Film : Maine Pyaar Kiyaa
*ing : Salman Khan, Bhagyashree
Singer(s) : Sharada Sinha
Music : Ram Laxman
Lyrics : Asad Bhopali
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> The storyline is too common in Hindi films, to prove tobe a good
clue for me :(
Kamana:
Sharda Sinha has sung the bidai song in HAHK and it sounds good. She is
not screeching in it. You could have chosen the HAHK song. This one is not
good.
Abhay Avachat:
That Rs X = 2000/-. You must execute everything to precision ! I enjoyed
this movie, the music and Lata's voice. Really. No jokes.
20. Shakeela is sitting by the side of a stream, with the rays of the
sun softly filtering through the mists settled around when this song
starts. Pradeep Kumar, the hero, is also in the picture, but not in the
same frame -- he's slowly trudging towards the lonely Shakeela, while
Rafi's voice proclaims in the background that no number of reincarnations
can ever separate them. He actually does mention the exact number of
reincarnations that will be ineffective in keeping them apart, as if he is
a master of masters in music. Surprisingly, as the song ends, this does
seem to end up being true, as Pradeep Kumar manages to trudge all the way
to where Shakeela is sitting, waiting for him...
[33/39]
Song : sau baar janam lenge, sau baar fanaa honge
Film : Ustaadon Ke Ustad
*ing : Pradeep Kumar, Shakeela
Singer(s) : Rafi
Music : Ravi
Lyrics : Asad Bhopali
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> Thanks for RJGK type of clue :-)
21. This song could easily qualify as being one of the most ambivalent
songs in Hindi films. Zareena Wahab's backgrounded voice seems to be
evaluating her feelings towards Amol Palekar. On the screen, they are on
one of the busy beaches of Bombay, frolicking hither and thither,
celebrating their sapling love. They are the embodiment of the working
middle class of the big city, trying to eke out a living in the hustle and
bustle, and fall in love at the same time. Love becomes a very
intellectual emotion at these times. Zareena is not sure whether she loves
Amol or not. On the one hand, she says, I want to be with you all the
time, I love the way you speak, I search for excuses to meet you ... and on
the other, I am sure that I don't love you at all!
The lyricist of this song is not the plagiarising vessel-loving poet
mentioned earlier, though all the other songs in this film have been penned
by him, including the "vessel song".
[34/39]
Song : tumhe ho na ho, mujhako to itanaa yakeen hai
mujhe pyaar tumase nahiin hai nahiin hai
Film : Gharonda
*ing : Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab
Singer(s) : Runa Lailaa
Music : Jaidev
Lyrics : Naqsh Lyaalpuri
[UVR: My HMV cassette sleeve says so]
Comments:
Neha Desai:
the best part of this song was when Amol puts Chilli Chutni in the Bhel(?)
she is eating...she starts drinking water when he taps the glass from the
bottom...:) and then she throws the water on him... cute picturisation and
very nice song...Afterall Gulzar hai.. hey seems like u have featured
quite a few SDB and Gulzar songs... Jeete raho..:))
Chetan and Ketan:
Love both versions of this song. Runa was (is?) a wonderful
singer. What a voice !
22. This song has been entirely picturised on Nehru's funeral procession
as it progresses on its way to Shanti Van from Teen Murti Bhavan, via Raj
Path, India Gate etc (I'll stop before this starts sounding like the list
of stops on DTC route number 503!).
Nothing else needs be said about this song, except that this is one of
Rafi's most melodious Madan Mohan MD'd songs -- and who wouldn't listen to
Rafi when he himself asks you to listen to his voice?
[31/39]
Song : merii aavaaz suna, pyaar kaa raaz suno
Film : Naunihaal
*ing : ??
Singer(s) : Rafi
Music : Madan Mohan
Lyrics : Kaifi Azmi
UVR&Pavan:
Strangely, none of the participants had any comments on this song.
Well, that's just the greatness of Rafi's voice: you are tongue-tied
in wondrous amazement even when you just *think* about it.
:-))
23. Although some may beg to differ (and pardon them, O Lord, for they
know not what they do), Sahir is a poet for every moment of our lives.
Mukesh's Khaiyyaam directed voice says as much, in this song from a very
successful multi-starrer Yash Chopra movie about changing relationships
(what's new?). One of the second generation Kapoor heroes stars as the
son of his real life "chacha" in this film, and his wife stars as his
girlfriend. In this song, this second generation hero is getting married
to his wife, and taking blessings from their parents -- Amitabh and Rakhee,
the relationship between whom has taken on a new twist owing to this
wedding ... "the nature and definition of relationships change, but the
basis doesn't".
[27/39]
Song : mai har ik pal kaa shaair huun
Film : kabhi kabhie
*ing : Amitabh, Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor
Singer(s) : Mukesh
Music : Khaiyyam
Lyrics : Sahir
Comments:
Kamana:
I would like to comment on this Sahir-Gulzar reference throughout the
quiz. It is very unfair of knowledgable RMIMers like you to comment on them
like this. Please do not compare Sahir saab with Gulzar. Sahir Saab kitne
senior hain Gulzar se. If you made such references to rekindle old flames
then i would suggest is that give this war a break! so that it becomes
interesting once again.
Abhay Avachat:
Boy ! I just don't remember this song. There goes my Bronze Medal. How
about a steel medal ? :-)
Sandeep:
almost got me saying "pal do pal ka", didn't you ? :)
Ramki:
I liked the way you clued in the mukhada in the first sentence of the clue.
24. Jubilee Kumar is sitting at the reading table, gazing at Meena
Kumari's picture and crying (literally, with tears flowing down his heavily
make-up clad cheeks) that he can't let go of the memories of his past days.
There is Raj Kumar in this film, but not in this Rafi song MD'd by
Shanky-Junky. The heart may or may not by a temple, but God certainly
lives in Rafi's voice in this song (and indeed in any other, but that's
quite another story).
[33/39]
Song : yaad naa jaaye, beete dino.n kii
Film : Dil Ek Mandir
*ing : Rajendra Kumar, Meena Kumari
Singer(s) : Rafi
Music : Shankar Jaikishen
Lyrics : Shailendra?
Comments:
Surajit Bose:
In case you were wondering, it's in Raga Keervani. An unusual choice for
Naushad, because it's a Karnatik raga. Dil ek mandir. (Incidentally, Duniya
na bhaye mohe, which you referred to in Chitrahaar 1, is definitely not in
Bhairavi; it's more like a mixture of komal rishabh asavari and mian ki
todi.)
Kamana:
What happened to Sridhar? (who made this film). He made films upto the
second half of the '80s and then disappeared (at least from my memory)
Neeraj and Prince:
Crying Kumar is more like it. So what else is new ?
Satish Kalra:
Let me re-start the SJ Vs. other MDs controversy by objecting to them being
referred to as Shanky-Junky. For most movies after the mid-sixties,
especially after Jaikishan's death in 1970, that title probably would not
be unbefitting, but certainly not for films before that.
25. This last song in the quiz could possibly be the last movie of a
talented MD. A movie of the 40-s about the Indian struggle for
independence, in this song, Gandhiji's monkey seems to be telling us "don't
say nothin'". And mysteriously, it's doing this in Lata's
decidedly-past-her-prime-and- surely-besura voice. The hero of this movie
makes a remarkable transition from being blown off his feet by a beautiful
girl, to fighting the British ... because her father inspires him to! My
foot! All he's doing is eyeing the girl all the while!
This song appears twice in the film, both times as a background song, once
as a seductive sensuous love song, and again, at the very end of the movie
as a kind of a salutation to the brave warriors who laid down their lives
during the Independence struggle. Certainly an unlikely pair of situations
for the same lyrics to fit properly to, but Javed Akhtar weilds an
occasionally powerful pen. Both times, the singers miraculously sound as
if their voice was made for Gandhiji's monkey (or any other monkey, for
that matter).
[38/39]
Song : kuch naa kaho, kuch bhii naa kaho
Film : 1942 - A Love Story
*ing : Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koiraala
Singer(s) : Lata
Music : R.D.Burman
Lyrics : Javed Akhtar
Comments:
Snehal Oza:
SNE> I thought it was Kavita K who sings both version _in_ film. Lata
version is only on albums (audio ones). [ I have seen the film but
that hardly make any impact on my prev. stmt. Well, didn't sound like
LM in the film ]
(UVR: *THAT* is the point! She does'nt sound like Lata at all).
Ambrish and Sharada:
What apt words with regards to both the singers who sang this song !!!!
Kumar Sanu and the Lata of today - Kuch Na Kaho Kuch Bhee Na Kaho !!!! Is
this the same Lata who sang "Rasik Balamaa" or "Mittee se khelte ho baar
kis liye" or "Jyoti Kalash Chhalke" or "O sajnaa barkhaa bahaar aayee" ???
:(
Kesavaraj K:
I was totally confused by "Gandhiji's monkey" and only now I realised the
clue in it, though I got the song long back !!
Malini:
I don't agree with you here. She has never been besuri, IMHO :) (In
Malini's HO)
Balaji and Malini:
=> A slight correction (quoting Ashok here), there is actually a third version
=> entirely in chorus.
(UVR&Pavan:
It appears that Ashok is so upset by this omission that he did not
send in an entry. Maaf kar deejiyegaa Ashok saahab)
Pankaj Kakkar:
I agree totally with your comments on the song. Even RDB wasn't
original in this song - he lifted the main tune (sthayi) from one of
his own songs (hardly lifting though) in Khoobsoorat(? not sure about
this!), and the interlude from his father's song in clue no. 13
Surajit Bose:
Kucch na Kaho. 1942, a Love Story. If this is right, I'll be
tremendously kicked, because I've never heard the song!! I figured out
the answer simply by looking up Balaji and Malini's RJKG quiz on tandem
songs.
Abhay Avachat:
OK. I won't say anything. :-)
