This question might sound stale and oft repeated to many, but I still
don't understand what exactly is a bhavgeet. The definition provided by
Surajit is that it is a "song of feelings", feelings which are mostly
romantic. Is there any other criterion for a song to be classified as a
bhavgeet? From a few "bhavgeets" that I can think of right now, it seems
to me that it is a conversation of a person with her/his beloved (and it
could be God as in the case of Jeevalaga raahile re). Is that true?

I think the meaning is quite straightforward. "Bhaav" is emotion. Any song that
conveys emotions is a "Bhaavgeet". "Bhaktigeet" is a special case of
"Bhaavgeet", where the emotion is surrender to God.

Though a song conveying any type of emotion should be theoretically called a
"Bhaavgeet" ( say, a patriotic song ), "Bhaavgeet" normally restricts itself to
romance, love, loyalty, and Hijr ( separation of lovers )
