Does P Susheela surpass Asha's record?

I wonder whether P Suseela comes close to (if not surpasses) Asha's
record of having sung the maximum number of songs. I was browsing a
website dedicated to this chanteuse from the South [http://
psusheela.org] , and saw elaborate listings of her songs in Tamil,
Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu besides a few in Hindi and Sanskrit.
Here are the statistics obtained from songs lists on that website:

Tamil film songs: 2969
Tamil devotional (Hindu): 1510
Tamil devotional (Xian): 113
Tamil devotional (Muslim): 1
Tamil private album: 24
Telugu film songs: 4823
Telugu devotional: 24 (I am so sure there are many more non-film
Telugu songs by her)
Kannada film songs: 513
Kannada private albums: 16 (there are two albums shown, I am assuming
8 songs per album)
Kannada devotionals: 54
Malayalam film songs: 808
Malayalam devotionals: 42
Malayalam private albums: 13
Hindi songs: 58
Sanskrit: 24

The total is 10,992 and this is when the lists aren't complete
(especially the part on Telugu devotionals). Furthermore, many of the
artists from the south also have a decent repertoire in Sinhalese and
Oriya, and those songs haven't quite been listed. That being the case,
I am now really wondering - does she equal or surpass Asha's record of
12,000 songs?

Possible, but difficult to say either way.

Unfortunately Asha's non-HIndi and non-film numbers are not known with
definiteness.

'better' singer is subjective, number of songs is not. I have not
heard enough of P. Susheela to comment. I am glad that you have.

hi guys..
The number what u find from smt.P.susheela's website is preliminary.
We have started her site in 2003 and that time I had these
collections with me. This is only my collection in 2003. Now my
collection crossed more than 15,00 songs.
I am a fan of hers and staying in bangalore.. Collecting her songs
from other languages are very difficult for me . Within my limits I
have collected this songs.
The actual song count will be more than 30,000 songs.. The telugu
movie songs itself will cross 10,000 songs. The telugu devotionals
will be another 3000 songs .. Tamil movie songs will be around 8000
songs.. Devotionals another 3000 songs.. I have collected lots of
albums and I dont have time to spare to update the huge database.
The reason for this count ..
1. More number of movies made in south .. she was the prominent
singer till 80’s and prominent singer in telugu till early 90’s. Till
80’s very less movies were released without her songs..
2. Each telugu movie will have an average of 8 songs in which five or
six duets and one or two solos.
3. Lots of dubbing movies from all languages to telugu and tamil..
Most of the telugu movies will be in dubbed to tamil and telugu will
be dubbed in tamil. We always feel she didn’t sing many songs for
ilayaraja.. That count itself cross 300 songs.
4. Lots of unreleased movies and some will be stopped after song
recording ..
5. Lots of devotionals in tamil and telugu.. In tamil nadu each temple
will have its own albums. I have around 200 albums which is around
2000 songs in tamil and sure it will be atleast of another 100
albums.. It will be more telugu.
6. Private albums for political parties, social organizations.

I think you mean 15,000.

I am skeptical without a Telugu and Tamil Geet Kosh. Similar claims
were made (and are still made by some) fans of Lata and Rafi. Heck,
she even got into that infamous record book and Rafi wrote a letter
staking his claim.

That's a very broad statement, not true from the beginning. Let us
start with 1952 when PS started. in 1952, Telugu 25 and Hindi 102!
Telugu number rises slowly in the 60s-70s but remains below Hindi
until 1979 when it rises above. After that it goes up and down but
never more than 10% above.

Did she sing all these average 8 songs always? If she sang about 4,
the estimate immediately drops by half :)

You say lots of movies, but the number of songs turns out to be 300!

> 4.      Lots of unreleased movies and some will be stopped after song

How many is lots of unreleased? In Hindi, per decade, there are about
30-50 unreleased films for which records have been made. And did she
sing all the songs in all of these unreleased?

In short, until I see an actual Geet Kosh, I find the numbers
difficult to believe.

If the number indeed exceeds 30000, then she was recording on an
average 2 songs per day right from 1952 to 2007, leaving her no time
1) to travel between Hyderabad, Madras, Bangalore and Trivandrum
2) to travel to Delhi to receive the numerous national awards.
3) for just plain day to day living, rest and holidays.

Just my take

till mid-90's southern music industry was working from chennai.. all
the recording were happening from chennai..
she used to record foru to eight songs per day ..
SPB is claiming 36,000 songs in the span of 40 years which is
happened because of the number of songs he has recorded in his peak..
I am sure.. Soon we will prove this 30,000 count it with
right proofs...

Four recordings are easily possible.. they used to work fifteen hours
per day .. Once SPB recordec 16 songs in a day.. that too in late
70's.
Already someone could have been recorded the trace ( fro late 70's)
and they used to complete the singing part in an hour..
SPB, P.Susheela, S.Janaki and vani jayram and chithra are highly
professionlas and they were doing it when they were at their peak..
I have already told... we will prove it right proofs..

Thanks for this song. It's a really good rendition. I liked it a lot.
Who is the music director and when was this recorded?

Music is by P.B.Sreenivas. A "meera bhajan" LP was released on her
silver jubilee function in 1976 and the music was by the playback
singer P.B.Sreenivas..
There are four hindi songs in that album..
She has sung few albums in hindi on "satya saibaba"

I am a fan of her, too. There is some sort of melifluous sweetness in her voice that I do not hear in any other singer's voice. Susheela always sang songs at the "right" pitch, never too shrill.

I like Lata, Asha and Geeta Dutt, too. But Susheela is unique and not just because of her vast repertoire. There is not even a single news item of her having a tiff with a music composer, no attempt to suppress the growth of other singers or to destroy the career or a composer, no record of using her superior position in the '50s and '60s to hoodwink anyone in the film industry.

She mastered Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam in no time and sang in those languages as if each language was her mother tongue. To an untrained ear all "south Indian" languages may sound the same, but that merely says more about one's knowledge of these languages. Knowing one of these languages is not enough to learn the intricacies and accent of the other languages.

Referring to P Susheela as Lata of "south" is as flattering as calling Kalidasa Shakespear of the East.

Let us do some math....

There 52 Sundays, festival holidays, family celebrations, a fellow can fall sick etc .. so we can safely assume a highly active singer can sing for recording on 250 days in a year. Lets assume the capability of this individual is on an average to record 2 songs on every active day and 50 years. Even though Asha Bhosle has a longer active life of singing but I seriously doubt she records more than 50 songs in a year these days therefore averaging 2 songs a day over fifty years is a reasonable output for a voracious singer.

This translates to 250*2*50 = 25000 songs

So question is can anybody record 45000 songs?

This numbers game seems to be popular. Rafi had contested Lata's record with a similar calculation, and referring to her "frail constitution". To me it is enough that P Susheela was the most popular singer in her league for decades ever since she entered the industry, just as Lata was. Thankfully, the singers themselves don't seem to care all that much about these numbers, just as many popular heroes and heroines dismissed these rankings.

There seem to be a tradition in Indian film industry to inflate by a factor
sometimes as large as 10. Lata had claimed 25,000. Rafi had claimed 2800.
Somewhere I read Mehdi Hasan had sung 53000 songs.

When I talked to Hemlata and said you have sung around 500 songs,
she claimed she had sung 5000. When I spoke with Suman Kalyanpur and
mentioned about 800+ songs, she said number is in thousands.

On one hand they can be excused because they do not keep track of count.
I remember speaking to Hamraazji who said that he mentioned on a
podium that it is the job of historians such as him to keep track of
numbers.
Only person who seemed to have kept perfect score of his work was Anand
Bakshi.
In my interview with his son, Rakesh Bakshi mentioned that Anand Bakshi
used to keep a book and record same day details of the song
written/recorded.

P.Susheela could have sung around 25000 songs. Guinness world record accepted 17,695 songs with proofs that too form 1960. She is singing from 1951 and many songs were not added because of improper proofs.
