Quite an average song to be a hit in the Golden era? no? So much for
their music appreciation skills!

I had the Binaca Geet mala 25th anniversayry casettes at home in India and i am quite positive that the song "baharon Phool Barsao" was in there before 1955.

something wrong in this list then. By the way the casettes were released by HMV IIRC and hosted by Ameen Sayani.

I can assure you that 'mahengai maar gayi' ws indeed the top song of
that year. And 'hai hai yeh majboori' from the same film was the
#2 song that year. I was a big fan of this show and remember this
vividly.

I know 'sheesha ho ya dil' was #1, but am not sure of the year.

The top song of the year was certainly "Aap jaisa koi" from Qurbani
(Nazia Hasan-Biddu effort). I remember the Asha song ran over the
year-end. While for the first part of its run it was consistently second
to "Aap jaisa koi", over the second part of its run, it was second to "Om
shanti om" from Karz. You can confirm the exact years but IIRC, Karz was
in 1981, so "Aap jaisa koi" should be 1980 as also "shiisha ho ya dil ho"

I am not really sure about this song. Those years I used to write down
the top 16 for the year and while I recall the RTGM song, I don't
remember Hero being the top song....

Pleeeeease don't do this. This song was by Talat. Much as I may like
Mukesh, Talat is Talat! And with Madan Mohan, that was a potent
combination..despite what he may say, I still shed tears that his day is
long gone now...

No you are wrong. The top song of 1980 was "dafli wale" (Sargam). "Aap
jaise koi"
was at # 4. Like you I also felt that Aap Jaise Koi should be # 1 .
Karz was a
1980 release and Om Shanti Om was at # 3 , Asha song was at #2.

Even though Sargam was a late 1979 release it songs went well into 1980.

Please read my other posting where I have mentioned the role of Shroto
Sangho Ki Rai
in boosting undeserving songs.

The hero song was #1.

There was a song from the same movie "Main Na Bhoolonga", wasn't that the
best song from the album and the song of the year?
