The truth about Gulzar's story?

I am sure many RMIMers remember the article by Gulzar describing
how he came around to writing "Mora gora ang lay le" in Bimal Roy's
Bandini, his first song. I found it quite interesting and entertaining
as did many others, I presume.
In one of the issues (probably #97) of listener's bulletin (by Hamraaz)
that I was reading yesterday, he reviewed a book of poems by Gulzar in
which the above mentioned article is featured. According to Hamraaz,
Gulzar's account is untrue because he only wrote the mukhda of the
song and the rest was written by Shailendra. He goes on to add that
Gulzar's oft-repeated claim that the song was his first and Bandini
his first film are also wrong. According to Hamraaz, Gulzar was the
lyricist for quite a few films before Bandini starting as early as
1958 (four years before Bandini). He doesn't give any further details.
I would appreciate if anyone can add to that.

ps: There are some really informative articles in the listener's bulletin
which I hope to post (at least the informative/interesting bits) later.
Of course they would take more time and wouldn't be as spicy as this :)

I believe Hamraaz's story to be authentic, I remembered it from somewhere.
A quick search on Dejanews told me that Chandrashekhar(of the now-extinct
and sorely missed Saaz aur Awaaz? series) had once told us on rmim:

There's more to "Mora gora" than most RMIMers would think.
It's certainly not Gulzar's first film song, but for some reason the man
whould rather have people believe that it is, although it's his first
well-known song. He's penned many lyrics for films in the '50s as Gulzar
Deenvi, the most notable being the Raj Kapoor starrer "Shriman Satyawadi"
(music: Dattaram) in 1960. That movie had beautiful Mukesh numbers like "Rut
albeli mast sama" and Haal-e-dil hamara, jane na bewafa"; one wonders what
Gulzar had to be ashamed of.
But here's the bombshell. Amla Mazumdar, the late Shailendra's daughter,
lives and works in Dubai and is a good friend of mine. According to her, her
father once confided to her that Gulzar had written only the 'mukhda' of
"Mora gora ang", and that he wrote the rest! So believe what you will...

In addition to what has been stated by Shekhar of Dubai, Shailendra's
another daughter, Mrs.Gopa Chandra, presently residing in Kanpur, has claimed
that she even keeps that piece of paper on which Shailendra had completed the
song 'Mora goraa ang laike...'. She has also confirmed me that Gulzar had
only written the Mukhda and rest of the lines were penned by late Shailendra
! For Gulzar, he is free to claim 'Mora goraa ang laike...' to be HIS maiden
effort but the fact, which, I'm sorry to put on record, has been denied by
Gulzar, is that prior to BANDINI(1963), he had already written a few songs
for 3 Hindi movies - CHORON KI BAARAAT(1 song), DILER HASEENA(at least 3
songs) and SHREEMAAN SATYAWAADI(4 songs) - all censored in 1960 with the name
as 'GULZAR DEENVI' (DEENA is the name of a village of Ludhiana (Punjab State
of India) to which he belongs) . On being questioned, Gulzar, without any
hesitation, claimed that he was working in a garage in Delhi at that time !!
The story did not end here. When I contacted one of the co-lyricist,
Mr.Gulshan 'Baawara' of SHREEMAAN SATYAWAADI', he specifically confirmed that
it was same Gulzar and there is no any other Gulzar in Bollywood to carry
this credit. I'm sure, when I meet Gulzar in person with docomentary proof,
he won't be able to deny the facts stated above.

Accuracy noted. But it was "deliberate padding". I cut short the lines for the
sake of brevity and relevance. I thought I might steal a leg-bye, but was sent
back by Umpire Bose :-)
