Now, she wants the lyrics, and hopefully the song, too.
Can someone help?
Also, sung at a quickish pace, it sounded like Rafi
was saying "al zabar aa..." is that the correct
pronunciation for the word "alif"?
thanks,
Vijay
I have the song "somewhere." Would that I knew
where, exactly, so I could transliterate it for you.
In response to your second point, NO. I recall
pretty clearly that Rafi sings "alif zabar aa".

I found a (couple of) mp3(s) of this song on cooltoad.
Here's my attempt at transliterating it. Use Avinash's
http://www.aczoom.com/itrans/online site to get the
Nagari version.
(Question: who's the female voice in this song? The
EarthMusic site says it's Asha Bhosle but I have my
doubts and so I've just used "la.Dakii" below.)
This song, if none other, should be written in the Urdu
script for it to truly make sense. Especially the "alif
zabar aa" parts and the final "alif be pe te Te se"
alphabet recitation at the end[1] of the song. I suggest
you get your daughter one of those "a se anaar,
aa se aam, i se imalii, ii se iikh" books, only one that
teaches the Urdu script. There's lots of 'em available
near the Charminar area and in Chandni Chowk :)

[1] I'm not 100% sure the alphabet recitation is correct;
for example the letter for 'ga' is '"gaaf" in Urdu, but Rafi's
saying "ge". I also think I hear him say "'ain al-qaaf kaaf"
instead of "'ain Gain kaaf". The words following "laam"
are also a bit slurred, and I've approximated them to
what they should be.
[2] The word that appears as \underline{she} stands
for "zhe" (as in, say, leisure, treasure, measure, etc).
Devanagari has no character to represent it.
If you need the mp3 (128 bitrate), please send me an email.

The www.crimsonbay.com (label Saregama) lists only Mohammad Rafi as
the singer.

I checked HFGK yesterday...the female voice is
Sudha Malhotra.
Thanks a lot for the prompt response.
