I recently came across a tape "Mohammed Rafi In a Sentimental Mood",
by HMV (Sheer Magic). The music has been digitally remastered.
It is more expensive than their regular tapes (Rs. 100), but
I think it is worth it as the recording quality is excellent. If
anybody is aware of other titles in this series, I would appreciate
getting this info. I looked up the various pages on Indian music,
but did not find anything.

I first saw sheer magic in last quarter of 95.
My observation that time was all cassettes available in
series were of bouncy /happy songs / hit movies.
I remember seeing Silsila, kishore hits, umrao jaan in sheer magic
series.

A couple of other good titles are:

Talat Mahmood in a Blue Mood
Madan Mohan
Salil Choudhry
Lata - 2 different cassettes
Kabhi Kabhie
Silsila

and I think there is another Rafi tape - Rafi Love Songs.

I got a package of five cassettes in this new series (well, at least
they're new here in Aus.) a couple of weeks ago:

Silsila
Kabhi Kabhi
Jagjit & Chitra Singh: Favourites (2 vol's; incl. Ghalib's 'yeh
na thi hamari qismat', 'aah ko chahiye' and 'hazaron khwahishen [which is
how Jagjit pronounces it] aisi' and others)
Mukesh Merry Moods (incl. 'jhoom jhoom ke nacho aaj', 'awara
hoon', 'suhana safar', 'yeh mera diwanapan hai', 'kis ki muskaraton pe',
'tum agar mujh ko na chaho', 'waqt karta jo wafa', 'sajan re jhooth mat
bolo', 'chand si mehbooba ho meri', 'chandan sa badan', 'koi jab
tumharara hriday tod pe', 'kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khyaal aata hai',
'kai baar yun bhi dekha hai' and 'ek din bik jayega')

I'd also ordered the following, but they were out of stock :-(

Lata Haunting Memories
Lata Love Songs
Mohd. Rafi in a Sentimental Mood
Sunderkhand Tulsi Ramayan
Kishore Kumar's Great Yodels

The sound quality of the cassettes is brilliant, crystal clear. Just by
the by though I was quite disappointed with the Jagjit and Chitra Singh
tapes--I'd never heard them before, and I found a few of the songs'
instrumentation a bit too sweet (the chorus bit in 'ai Gam-e-dil kya
karoon' is positively treacly and the treatment of Muzaffar Warsi's
'lab-e-khaamosh se', well, I won't go into that); though it could just be
my dislike of synthesizers, the violin as a solo instrument and flutes.
The other cassettes are brilliant; though (and I'm finding hard to say
anything against the great man) Amitabh's 'rendition' of 'neela aasman so
gaya' and 'rang barse', well, who let the man near a mike (and to his
father's song as well! I'm sure Bachchan was regretting the day he gave
his OK to K.A. Abbas to let his son begin his career in Bollywood).

The cassettes also come with an insert that has the lyrics in Devanagri.
I got them through a new mail order service that has been set up here in
Aus., but I don't imagine you'd want to hear about that. The cost of each
cassette was A$4.50 (which I think is about US$5.60); their Indian price
is Rs. 100 (which I think is about A$3.00). I've got the list somewhere
from the mail order company of all their titles--e-mail me if you want
more.

A few non-film ones I have come across
- Aaye na balam : Thumris by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan
- Call of the Valley
- Darbari Kanada by Vilayat Khan
- Bhaav-geet (Marathi) by Lata (*)
- Ganpati aarti (Marathi) by Lata and Usha

(*) - has one song composed by Lata under the
pseudonym Anandaghan

That's all I can remember.

>Veena. ( A silent Rafian ;) ).

And yes, for Rafians, there is the newly-released
Rafi-Asha duets :)

I came across a few more in the music shop today:

OP Nayyar
Asha-Rafi Duets
Asha-Kishire Duets
Hits of Talat Mahmood
Hemant Kumar

The quality of the tapes is superb and they cost $3.50 in the US.

P.S. Could anybody let me know if there is a cassette dedicated to
Naushad Ali ?

HMV provide a few cassettes of music by Naushad. One is a 4 series
cassette collection - I think its part of the Golden Collection.

Also, a single cassette exists - Rafi sings Naushad, or something
similar.

Hope this helps,

Aman
