Chalan (Books):
Systematic Expansions on the 650+ Ragas given in
Ragopedia and about 50+ Rare Ragas. Composed by Pandit
Shiv Dayal Batish and edited by Ashwin Batish. These 7
Volumes follow the alphabetical order of Ragopedia.
Every raga Chalan has at its beginning, the information
from the Ragopedia -Raga Name; Thaat, Play time, Vadi,
and Samvadi; followed by its Arohi/Avarohi in Staff and
Sargam notations. To this Ragopedia information are
added new pointers that will help you understand the
raga more fully. These additions are highlighted below:
Doha: A two line verse summarizing the most important
raga elements.
Jati: Ascending and descending note classification.
Note Info: A list of modified (Vikrit) notes used
in the raga
Pakar: The raga's cognitive or catch phrase.
Mood: The moods this raga evokes.
Playing Hints Comments: Additional details about the raga.
Carnatic Affiliation: This compares the North Indian
raga with any South Indian types. If a close match is
found, it is so stated, giving its S. I. name, along
with information on any composition Panditji has
composed on it. This segment also links the Southern
and the Northern works composed by Panditji.

Ashwin Batish presents 10 of the hottest rhythm cycles
of North India in this unique collection that has been
compiled especially for Jazz/World musicians and
composers interested in jamming with Tabla groves.
Rhythms featured are: Tintal -16 beats, Ek Tal -12
beats, Rupak -7 beats, Dadra -6 beats, Keharwa -8
beats, Jhaptal -10 beats, Jhumra -14 beats, Deepchandi
-14 beats, Dhamar -14 beats, and Jaltital -16 beats.
These tapes are especially made for persons interested
in practicing their music with the tabla beat. Each
cassette has the same rhythm and tempo recorded on
both sides so you just have to flip the tape over
and continue your practice. Tempos available are slow,
medium and fast. When ordering, please specify which
tempo you want by putting a S, M, or F next to the
catalog#. If playing with tabla rhythms is a new
experience for you, we recommend you start with the
