"ANDAAZ" is well-directed commercial venture with a mature handling of a
run-of-the-mill storyline. Movies of this kind obliterate the dividing line
between "commercial" and "art" movies.
Superb acting by Shammi Kapoor, Simi and Hema Malini, though I cannot say the
same about Mr. Handsome, Rajesh Khanna. All the happenings in the movie are
presented in a very subdued and natural manner, with no over-dramatization
that is so characteristic of Hindi movies:
The scene when Hema comes to know that her lover (Rajesh Khanna) is dead,
no yelling or screaming or shedding pots and pots of tears or attempting
to commit suicide or drowning in self-pity. We see a strong woman ready to
accept the tragedy and face life on her own.
The scene when Simi comes to know that she cannot have a child without
jeopardizing her own life. Simi is potrayed as a romantic right from the
beginning of the movie when she asks Shammi to build a "chhota sa Taj" for
her. Her decision to sacrifice her life and give birth to the child is
consistent with her this aspect of her character.
The scene when Hema's father-in-law comes to beg her forgiveness for
throwing her out earlier. I love the way Hema shows just a touch of pride
at having raised her kid on her own. Unlike most Hindi movies where the
"bahu" is expected to fall at her father-in-law's feet, no matter whose
fault. Hema carries off the scene with great dignity.
But the part in the movie that is dearest to me is the relationship between
Hema Malini and Shammi Kapoor:
The relationship builds very gradually. Hema's initial hesitation in
falling in love with another man, and her eventual overcoming of the
hesitation was nicely done. Infact, my friend beleives that this conflict
in Hema's heart is potrayed in the Kishore-Rafi duet version of the theme
song of the movie: "ZINDAGI EK SAFAR HAI SUHAANA". When Shammi presents
his love to Hema, he brings into the discussion both the romantic/emotional
and non-emotional aspects (like pointing out that the kids like both of
them). He also handles his mother's objection to the relationship in an
extremely mature manner. (Unlike most Hindi films where the hero starts
doubting the heroine's character leading to a tangle of unnecessary filmi
complications.)
The soundtrack of the movie is quite good too. Music: Shankar Jaikishan,
Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri.
1) "ZINDAGI EK SAFAR HAI SUHAANA". There are 3 versions of this theme
song. A Kishore solo, an Asha solo and a Kishore-Rafi duet.
2) "RE MAMA RE MAMA RI" - A solo by Rafi picturized on Shammi Kapoor
"manaaoing" his cute chubby daughter.
3) "DIL USE DO JO JAAN DE DE" - A Rafi-Asha duet. Hema looks very
dignified, yet stunningly cute. A party song. (Kind of looked like a
copy of the party scene in "Charade" starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary
Grant)
4) "HAI NA BOLO BOLO" - Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Sushma and Pratibha is an
unusual song and scene for Hindi movies.
5) "MUJHE PYAAS AISI PYAAS LAGI HAI" - The customary Asha cabaret. Lousy
picturization, nice song.
Vandana.
3) "DIL USE DO JO JAAN DE DE" - A Rafi-Asha duet. Hema looks very
dignified, yet stunningly cute. A party song. (Kind of looked like a
copy of the party scene in "Charade" starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary
Grant)
I don't know the scene in "Charade". But before this song, in the party
they are playing the game where a couple carries a ball between their
bodies and they are not supposed to let it fall down, without touching
it with hands. Shammi and Hema play this game before/during the song.
4) "HAI NA BOLO BOLO" - Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur, Sushma and Pratibha is an
unusual song and scene for Hindi movies.
As a kid, I used to like this song very much, and also equally good
"Ek baNta do
do baNte chaar
chhoti chhoti baatoN meN
baNt gaya sansaar" ( from Kalicharan ?? )

Part of the reason for some good and slightly non-conventional touches might
be the writers of the film. I think that this was one of the earliest films
of "Salim-Javed"... Can we call them the Naushads among the film writers?
They got unheard of sums for writing films and really brought some
interesting changes to the story writing concept.
I had read somewhere that they gave only 12 films together. And I have been
looking for which films as and when I could. Some help in this regard would
be great....
So far, I can remember, a few other movies that were probably written by
Salim-Javed. Andaaz was probably their first.
Sachcha Jhoota was another film. Another non-conventional film. Imagine a
Manmohan Desai film, where there is a double role and the two characters
still end up un-related!!! The dog forms a major character in this film.
Was this concept used in some Hollywood film? Also, was it one of the first
good guy roles for Vinod Khanna in a major release?
Story was about a thief taking advantage of the similar looks of a
simpleton and makes him act as his alibi while he is busy robbing people.
The 'neat' idea was that while the simpleton is learning to imitate the
suave thief, the thief is planning for all eventualities. Plus the dog
concept. Which was re-apprised with some changes by a self-acknowledged
Manmohan Desai fan - David Dhawan in "Bol Radha Bol".
I am not so sure about this one, but perhaps "Johnny Mera Naam" was also
a Salim-Javed film. A nice yarn about a special agent trying to entrap a
guy known to be a criminal. What was the neat touch in this movie? Has
to be the mother. Played by Nirupa Roy. The hero has gained access to
our criminal's SPECTRE like organization by masquerading as a common
thief. Super-Criminal smells a rat and brings Nirupa Roy in. The
audience (meaning me) expected that she (what with Moms being Moms :) )
would immediately go to the Hero and slap him on the face for having
found work in a criminal organisation or at least give the game away by
acknowledging him as her son. Sorry sir, no such thing happens. Nirupa
Roy, normally such a simple-minded mother in other movies is shown to be
really quick on the uptake. And she quickly acknowledges Pran as
her son!! And in doing so, the authors make use of another neat touch in
the film {Sorry, no more spoilers :)}!!
Then we have the Bachchan saga. Begins with Zanjeer. A film which the
duo had written for Dev Anand, who gave the film away because he didn't
like the fact that the hero was not to sing any songs!! Amitabh took it
and the Angry Young Man persona was born... The first such movie. Neat
touch - the dream of the black-robed figure on the horse. Vaguely
surreal, methought.
Sholay! Whattafilm!! And to think that Danny might have played Amjad's
role or even worse we might have had Shatrughan Sinha loudmouthing the
smooth one-liners that Amitabh was destined to deliver. Thank God for
que sera sera. :)
Deewar. Tho' the mother concept has been exploited earlier in films
too, it was reworked into the Angry Young Man saga. Redefined death scenes
and established standards for the same too. :) The screen sizzled and
still does in the re-runs, I guess with the anger felt by Amitabh. Neat
touch - the 'mera baap chor hai' and how they took mileage of that and
explained away the anti-hero.
Majboor. Interesting yarn about a guy who incriminates himself
deliberately. Was not that big a hit. Probably because they were trying
to break away from the Angry Young Man part. Was a brain tumor used in a
hindi movie before that?
Trishul. Mother strikes back. Again! The wronged woman concept. Neat
touch - Amitabh getting angry when somebody else talks ill of Sanjeev
Kumar, the person that Amitabh is bent on destroying. And that portrait
of Waheeda Rehman... one mean portrait!!
And lastly there was Shakti. The duo, I think, never made a movie as a
team after that one. Brought the two big guys together. Haven't seen
it... so can't add the neat touches... :)
They will perhaps be forever remembered for the way they shaped Indian
films around the Angry Young Man character. And will consequently be
charged with making movies forget the importance of good music.
However, a simple analysis shows that these films did have good songs.
The music of Andaaz, has already been discussed.
Sachcha Jhoota had pretty good numbers by Kalyanji Anandji. Meri pyaari
beheniya is almost a classic and almost always played in marriages.
Johnny Mera Naam is another KA film. Excellent songs. All of them. 'Husn
ke laakhoN rang' should not be forgotten (as a song, of course :) ).
Plus KK was so good in those songs.
Zanjeer. Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi. Plus 'diljaloN ka dil
jalaa ke'. I didn't like two fairly famous songs - 'ChaaQu chhuriyaaN'
and 'Deewane haiN, deewanoN ko na ghar chahiye'.
Sholay. Mehbooba. Ye dosti. Plus other songs were good.
Majboor. KA again. Three KK good songs. 'NaheeN maiN naheeN dekh sakta
tujhe rote hue', 'aadmi jo kehta hai' and 'daroo ki botal meN, kahe
paani bharta hai'
Trishul. Khaiyyam. Mohabbat Bade kaam ki cheez hai. Plus the cute
'gapoochi gapoochi gum gum' and (personal fav.) 'Jaaneman tum kamaal
karti ho'.
Shakti. Two songs 'Jaane, kaise, kab, kahaaN' and 'sanam ko KHat
likha.'
So, what were the other movies of Salim-Javed?
Later,
Ikram.

One of their major films you missed is Seeta aur Geeta. Was it
their first major hit? it had double role by hema, was later remade
[i think] as chaalbaaz (sridevi)
There must be others too, particularly with AB. It wont be unfair to
say AB owed his superstardom in part to salim-javed.
i was surprised about shakti. i thought they parted quite early.
I was mildly surprised by the low tally of their films together too.
The impact many of their films created gives a diff impression..

"DEEWAAR" is indeed a very intense movie. Again the interesting part of
the movie is the unconventional relationship between Parveen Babi and
Amitabh Bachchan. In the beginning, it is mere physical attraction,
which later develops into friendship and finally he proposes marriage.
Even when she realizes she is pregnant, she does not naturally assume
that he would marry her/expect him to marry her, which is a very unusual
attitiude for a Hindi movie character.
If I remember right, there is not a single duet picturized on Amitabh and
Parveen Babi. They do none of the running-around-trees business and
leave it to Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh (and Kishore Kumar and Asha
Bhonsle) to keep the audience amused with such antics.
Coming to the music of "DEEWAAR" (since Ikram seems to have overlooked
this movie in the music part of the discussion), I remember two very very
enjoyable Kishore-Asha duets:
1) "MAINE TUJHE MAANGA TUJHE PAAYA HAI, TU NE MUJHE MAANGA MUJHE PAAYA HAI"
2) "KEH DOON TUMHE YA CHUP RAHOON DIL MEIN MERE AAJ KYA HAI"
I love the part where Asha does "Arey nahin re nahin re nahin re nahin
re nahin nahin". Kya aawaaz hai, kya ada hai!! :)
Surprisingly I don't remember the other songs in the movie. Is there one
which Amitabh sings in the temple or something? And I think there is the
customary-Asha-cabaret also, picturized on Aruna Irani??

One can probably write a whole chapter on Asha Bhonsle's cabaret songs.
Another Kalyanji-Anandji/Asha Bhonsle cabaret-type song I remember partly
due to the picturization (an extremely cute-looking Farida Jalal trying
to seduce Dev Anand) is
"AAYIYE AAPKA THHA HAMEN INTEZAAR,
AANA THHA AA GAYE, HEY! KAISE NAHIN AATE SARKAAR"
from "MAHAL" (the new one starring Dev Anand, Asha Parekh and Farida
Jalal).

A superb film. Dilip and Amitabh play a father and son whose relationship
becomes estranged because Amitabh believes Dilip (a highly principled
police officer) puts duty above his love for his son. The melodrama
unfolds as Amitabh chooses the path of crime, and father and son are
forced to confront each other. A powerful script is enhanced by a strong
cast including Rakhee, Smita Patil and Amrish Puri. Dilip walked away with
the National Award, and IMO this was the last great film for Salim-Javed
and the director Ramesh Sippy.

How about Shaan, Seeta Aur Geeta or Saagar ? I am not sure about either,
but Salim-Javed were frequent collaborators with Ramesh Sippy.

No, it is not Nirupa Roy. The actress is Sulochana. She has played typical mother
roles in many Marathi and Hindi movies.

Saagar was by Javed Akhtar.
Akayla was (I think) Salim Khan.
So the collaboration part still sticks.
Adding the 'neat' touches -
Shaan - the street smart role for debutante Mazhar Khan. A similar
concept is shown in quite a few western movies eg. The Good TB&TU has a
similarly impaired informer for Angel eyes. But I liked the one in
Shaan. :)
Songs have been discussed (with considerable relish, I might add :) ) by
ND quite a few times. I concur with ND's high opinion. Really enjoyed
the picturisation of all songs in this movie. :)

The music of DEEWAAR-:
----------------------
Deewaar has only 3 songs picturised on screen. Their order of appearance
in the film is
Maine tujhe chaha (picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh)
the qawaali number filmed on Aruna Irani comes next.
It goes Koi mar jaaye
Amitabh talks to samant (Madan Puri) on phone during the song.
The last song is Kah doon tumhe (again on Shashi and Neetu)
APART FROM THIS the soundtrack of Deewaar contains two more number's
which were edited from the film.
IDHAR KA MAAL UDHAR a comedy number on smuggling was picturised on
Deven Varma whose role was also snipped off.
The other song was DEEWAARON KA JUNGLE which was to come with the credits
of the films. However in Yash Chopra's own words it did not go with the
mood of the film.
Amitabh sang no songs (on the screen) in this film. However when he
meets Anita (Parveen Babi) for the first time their is an English
song in the background "I am falling in love with a stranger"
both the missing songs are available on the MIL cassette of "Deewaar"
which comes with "power packed dialouges"

Anand
"Main aaj bhi phake hue paise nahin uthata"
Amitabh's immortal lines in "Deewaar"
Actually it goes : "haye re na na, haye re na~~aaa na, ye na karna,
Are nahin re nahin re, nahin re nahin nahin
nahin re nahin re, nahin re nahin nahin
Here are the details of soundtrack of DEEWAR(1975)
Music : R.D. Burman
Lyrics : Sahir Ludhianvi (a rare combo)
1. Maine Tujhe maanga tujhe paaya hai (KK & Asha)
2. Koi mar jaye kisi pe ye kahan dekha hai(Asha)
3. Idhar ka maal udhar jaata hai, udhar ka maal idhar aata hai(Bhupinder)
4. Deewaron ka jungle hai (Manna dey)
5. Keh doon tumhe ya chup rahoon (KK & Asha)
Except for song #3, which is a "sidey" song, all songs are nice.
Coming from Sahir lyrics are a bit disappointing, you can find a little
Sahir magic in the Manna solo. Otherwise its the usual "Ananad Bakshi" type
fare.
Arun
>Same goes for Seeta aur geeta....

There are totally 5-6 songs in this movie, but I like only two songs from this
movie:
1. Hawaa ke saath saath, ghaTaa ke sang sang (Asha-Kishore)
2. Koi laDaki mujhe kal raat sapane mein milii (Lata-Kishore)
Both songs are picturized on Hema-Sanjeev Kumar pair and Hema Malini looks great
in both the songs!

OK, here is a list of songs from Seeta Aur Geeta(RD Burman, Majrooh).
1. Hawa ke saath saath, ghata ke sang sang (KK & Asha)
2. KOi ladki mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili (KK & Lata)
3. Zindagi hai khel, koi pass koi fail (Manna & Asha)

Majrooh, KK, Lata, Asha and RDB are in top form in songs #1 and 2.
Manna -Asha duet is very nice, so are the other two sharabi songs.

That's unpardonable !! Such a person shouldn't be allowed to write on
this newsgroup :-) :-)
Anyway, I would leave it to more expressive guys to descibe "Shakti",
but wasn't "Shaan" also written by Salim-Javed ? Since it was between
Sholay and Shakti, I think it is logical that Ramesh Sippy would have
preferred to use Salim-Javed in a (futile) attempt to create another
blockbuster.
AFAIK the elusive one is that Amithab-Shashi-Sanjeev multi-starrer which
bombed badly. It was released in late 70s. The name of the movie is
"IMAAN-DHARAM". In fact this movie halted their non stop hit run and after
this movie SJ started declining.
Another thing is the story and screenplay of Shakti is copied from a tamil
film "thangaPadakam" ( gold medal) in which Shivaji Ganesan did the role of
Dilip Kumar. So I think SJ should not be given too much of credit for
Shakti.

Yup, that's right! So can we restrict such predominantly
movie-related articles to RAMLI alone? :) I am sure lot
of people don't even know that they are following up to
RAMLI articles cross-posted to RMIM.

I remember wondering why in the India of that time and with the amount of
money available a woman was dying of childbirth complications at home
rather than being rushed to the hospital. (Unless the family did not
want to invest in the bahu, a common complication worse than unsafe
motherhood.)
Or it may have just been producer stupidity. In retrospect, it reminds
me of the 1947 andaaz, where Dilip Kumar (?) sits on the piano (!) and
plays "tu kahe agar jivan bhar", which of course has not one piano note.
It might be interesting to note that the song "dil use do" is a foreign
song picked up by S-J. The original title is La, la, la by Manuel de la
Calva and R. Arcusa. These are spanish names, but I don't know from
which country. In my native Greece they copied it two years earlier and
turned it into "I am looking for a boy for a party"!
