what an incredibly nostalgic mood of sadness for a past that
promised much but in vain! what a desolately haunting lament
of heart-broken disillusionment!
another one in the same vein, we have rafi in "dil ek mandir"...

or, the plaintive cry of a soul mired in misery (rafi in guide)

on a more personal level, you have the shakespearian aura of tragedy,
the "what could have been but was not to be" despondency of regret that
comes through so beautifully in
"waqt ne kiya kya haseeN sitam`
tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum"
(i am also tempted to nominate the following in this category on account
of its lyrics, but somehow i have never found it as heart-rending as
my other nominations:

gulzaar is indeed non-pareil in his ability to use imagery to create
moods.)
and these are just the songs that i can think of off the top of my
head. i'm sure i'm missing out on a plethora of gems. but the bottom
line was expressed so beautifully by shelley:
"we look before and after
and pine for what is not.
our sincerest laughter
with some pain is fraught.
our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought."
as an aside, why is it that the saddest songs seem to have been
sung in male voices?

this country cry .. It is from the movie Naam, sung by Pankaj Udhas. Now

Bimal Roy.
