Khan Mastana,GM Durrani,Mukesh and Rafi were established play back
artists
during 1947.It is not understood why a legendary composer like
Khemchand Prakash
chose Bulo C Rani to render songs for the movie MULAQAT aspecially a
duet with Naseem Banu.
Rafi/Mukesh would have been a better choice.

A quick run through Geet Kosh pages shows that Bulo C Rani
sang in the following films in 1942/43, mostly for KCP and Gyan
Dutt - Iqraar, Mehmaan, Bansari, Chirag, Qurbani, Paigham,
Shankar Parvati, Vakil Sahab. An MD may keep asking a less
known voice to sing for him. Shankar Dasgupta has sung for
AB in Milan, Girls' School, Jeet, and Mehmaan (as late as 1953).

In article <d3eaeae5.02072...@posting.google.com>, p_kam...@hotmail.com says...

I haven't heard any song sung by Bulo C. Rani, so I can't say
how good a singer he was or how he sang this particular one.
Your question would make sense only if Bulo C. Rani botched this
song badly. Is that the case? Or are you asking the question on
general grounds? In the latter eventuality, I'll have to say
that this line of thinking has led to an impoverishment of
singer resources in Hindi film music from the 1950s onward.

Perhaps KP didn't care for any of the singers you mentioned.
He has rarely used Rafi and I don't know any song Mukesh sang
for him. His dissatisfaction with the existing crop of male
singers and the resulting search for other voices certainly
led to a happy outcome for Hindi music fans couple of decades
later: he discovered Kishore.

Of course, there can be no definitive answer to this
question. We can only surmise. For one thing, old
friendship could have played a part. And despite
"Tansen" etc., was Khemchand Prakash regarded as
"legendary" at that time ? We all swear by Roshan
and Madan Mohan. Were they regarded as "legendary"
in the mid-fifties ? In terms of market share and
mass popularity (not to speak of Awards), they lost out
to people like Shankar-Jaikishan. At the best of times,
it is difficult to find the true motivation for such
choices by using the subsequent or eventual stature
of the concerned person.

Yes Afzal Sab you are right.I have no idea how titles as Mouseqar-E-Azam
for Naushad was conferred when his music was declining year by year.Madan Mohan
was mentioned as King of Ghazals and I recently understand Ustad Mushtaq Husain
was known as Fakhr-E-Mouseqi and all the efforts made during the last 45 years
to hear a song composed by him didnot yield result.
Among the other notable musicians Gyan Dutt scored wonderful music and
the film journalists hardly mention about his contributions to hindi film
music.Journalists are probably responsible to a large extent for titles and
awards .

Hi

When people refer Madan Mohan as "King of Ghazals" and etc, why dont
we give credit or thought to people like Khaiyyaam and Jaidev. I have
listened to many ghazals composed by Khaiyaam which altogether change
in music and composition depending on the mood. With Madan Mohan i
always find the inevitable violin entering. (I dont mean to say Madan
Mohan was a lesser of music-director in any manner, but one should
think before calling someone as King or similar title

It may be matter of personal taste, but before giving crowns, there
should be poll of some sort. Compare music of Umrao jaan, where he
uses instruments and style pertaining to that era in Lucknow! And even
then the Ghazals correctly depicted the mood and music went hand in
hand.

Yes Animesh,I fully agree with you. Most of the ghazals for Begum Akhter were
composed by Khayyam. What about the musicians who composed lovely ghazals for
KL Saigal, today we do not know the names of the composers. The HMV/RPG is silent
on the MDs.
I am still awaiting a reply from Hamraaz ji about the composers of KL Saigal
ghazals.

KP

Thank you Kamalakar jee,

Well, I had in mind the more simpler tunes of him, like movie songs from
Shagoon, Razia Sultan, Bazaar, Umrao Jaan, Khandan and many more. I also
listened a few of Mohd Rafi Ghazals composed by him. "Nuktacheen hai
gham-e-dil" and more. He has few Mukesh and Asha Ghazals too, though
they are hard to find. He claims that he has composed many bhajans also,
though I have never seen a copy. If someone has links or resources, I
guess it will benefit the newsgroup.

I am not an ardent fan of Saigal Sahab, so cannot comment about him.

While Khayyam did compose quite a few of BA's ghazals, that he
composed "most of [her] ghazals" is gross overstatement. He composed a
few albums for her mostly in the last 10-odd years of her life. Most
of her earlier compostions were her own.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Thanks for the info, but my main point is different. I find the
presumption--that anytime an MD uses a singer other than Rafi or
Mukesh (or Lata, Asha, Kishore ..) it is a bad choice and there
better be a good explanation--ridiculous.

Yes Abhay I do agree as she learnt classical music for 6 years under
Ustad
Jhande Khan Saheb who was later engaged by Chandulal Shah of Ranjit
Films and she had every talent of composing her own ghazals.

Warm Regards,
