Hi !
Any Mystery buffs on the net. Lets look at some of the great
thrillers of Bollywood. I have ranked them according to my choice.

1. JEWEL THIEF (* Dev Anand, Vijayantimala, Ashok Kumar): An
unlikely candidate for a mys/thrller. But Vijay Anand maintains the
tension right from the word go. The Hero is being falsely framed for
crimes committed by his lookalike. A race against time to catch the
imposter takes him to Gangtok (Sikkim). ANju Mahendra, Tanuja add some
spice. Fantastic Music by S.D Burman.

2. KHEL KHEL MEIN (* Rishi Kapoor, Neetu SIngh): A practical
joke leads to murder and the college students being implicated. Great
performance by Rishi. I remember a scene where Rishi comforts Neetu on
the phone telling her everything will be allright and then breaks into
tears crying "Mein kaisa phas gayan". Surprise Ending.

3. BEES SAAL BAAD (* Biswajeet, Waheeda (?) ): A B/W classic.
HAunting melodies. A masked killer on the prowl. You'll never guess
whodunit.

4. MAHAL (* Madhubala, Ashok KUmar): Another B/W classic. A
vision manages to convince Ashok Kumar that they were lovers in a
previous birth, but the "Mahal" has more secrets to tell. HAunting
melodies.

5. MAJBOOR (* Amitabh Bachann, Parveen Babi): An IAC booking
clerk is doomed to die of a brain Tumor. He implicates himself in a
murder and targets his family to recieve the REWARD. BUt he survives the
operation and now has to find the real killer. Great Whodunit.

6. GUMNAAM (* MAnoj Kumar, Nanda) : If you havent read Agatha
Christies 10 little Indians, a must see. 10 strangers are brought
together by fate. But amongst them is a mad killer who methodically
executes them one by one. Mehmood in his first hyderabaadi role renders
"Hum kaale hai to kya hua dilwaale hain".

7. ITTEFAQ (* Rajesh Khanna, Nanda) : Saw this long time back. I
think Rajesh Khanna (an escaped convict) takes over the household of
Nanda. There is a surprise ending. A Songless movie.

8. DHUAN (* Rakhee, Mithun, Ranjeeta) : This was a flop, but I
enjoyed it. Mithun turns up at Rakhees place claiming to be her dead
husband. He finally convinces her she is mad. But somebody is playing
for bigger stakes. It's a copy of I think "Spiral Staircase".

Others which figure in this category : Mera Saya, Woh Kaun
Thi, The Train, Benaam etc. If you have any personal favourites other than
these please post.
Please no SPOILERS. Thanx in advance,
Sudeep Surender

Ten little niggers I think it was. About the ten people who are
brought to an island (any more info might act as a spoiler :) Was also
published under another ending (or another name? I am confused).

The other name under which it is published is `And Then There Were None'.

The correct answer is "All of the above".

How about "Achanak" starring Vinod Khanna (songless)
and "Farar" starring Amitabh and Sharmila Tagore? (story nearly same
as the above)?

Hi,

In the last few years there were two movies released which are
good misteries. One was Khoj (Rishi Kapoor, Nasiruddin Shah), an
exact copy of an American movie (I forgot the title), but still
is an interesting one. Second was Khamosh (Amol Palekar, Shabana)
which was also good. 100 Days was another thriller. All these
have Hindi 'masala' in them but to a lesser degree. Of course,
like all other whodunit stories, these movies leave many
questions unanswered (or at least without proper justification).

Nevertheless, these are, in my opinion 1000 times better
than Bees Saal Baad, which was really a terrible copy of
Sir Arther Conan Doyle's, The Hound of Baskerville, a great
adventure of Sherlock Holmes. The songs were really great,
but the cast (Vishwajeet and acting?, give me a break)
sucks. Sorry Hemantkumar, I liked all your songs but the movies
(save Khamoshi) you made can only serve one purpose, they are
the best examples of how movies should not be. Anyway, let him
rest in peace.

..but you forgot the 'shurt' *ing nasir and kanwaljeet. I am missing another
excellent mystery (not too old), *ing lots of T.V. star, and Amol palekar
and Nasir in main role. At one moment it seems that this is the end of movie,
and mystery is resolved, but suddenly it comes out that Amol was the killer.
Nasir did very well in the role of detective. Amol is 'safedposh' politician.
he he also acted well.Another classic of all the time is 'woh kaun thee'.
i liked it very much.

One of the best thrillers I have seen is 'Khamosh' with Amol Palekar,
Shabana Azmi, Soni Razdan, Pankaj Kapur et al. The killer is always
in the midst, unlike many "thrillers" where the killer pops up suddenly
from nowhere.

Nothing used to give me more pleasure than tagging along with my chums
to see a Ramsay "horror" movie. The direction, songs, actors, in short,
everything was lousy - which invariably made our day(s) - and this
converted the movies into comedies! The whole theatre used to erupt
in unashamed laughter when the "monster" made his entry! Remember the
immortal Bappi Lahiri lyrics from the Ramsay movie titled "Dak Bangla"
- "Yeh bhi apna hai, woh bhi apna hai,
Sab kuch sapna hai - Yah"

Dear Bharat!,
What a great service you have done to mystery lovers. Thanx to
you I wont be seeing this one. (I think I know which movie you are
refering to. If I name it that would be another spoiler. ) I had spent some time
searching for the video cassette.
If you are giving out too much of any plot or telling us who did
it, please add "SPOILER" in the summary.

Yetanudder movie which I really loved was the Marathi "Samna", albeit not a
mystery movie in the true sense of the word, the tension created by
the director Dr.Jabbar Patel was amazing. Shreeram Lagoo and Nilu Phule
were outstanding (as usual). ...and of course, the music of Hridaynath
Mageshkar..unforgetable!
The Kannada movie "Anveshane", was great. Smita Patil, Girish Karnad
and Anant Nag gave tremendous performances. A superb mystery/thriller
in which a dead body is found in the home of a working couple- Smita/Nag
- and they decide to dispose the body, without informing the police.
How can one forget, "New Delhi Times", which was a thriller/mystery
par excellence. Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, M.K.Raina, Om Puri
made the movie the way it was - winnning national awards and all.
The remake, "Ek Ruka Huan Faisla", starring, Pankaj Kapoor, M.K.Raina
and other chaps from the national school of Drama was amazing too.
Check these out!

The score for 'saamna' was by Bhaskar Chandavarkar.

Re great mysteries and thrillers,
I'm sure many of you mystery/horror afficionados have checked out
the latest such Indian flick: RAAT, directed by Ramgopal (SHIVA) Varma.

For those who haven't, it's definitely worth a dekko; our desi
filmmakers have finally made a technically slick (not to mention,
well-acted) film which could reasonably stand up to and hold its own
against several Hollywood movies of the same genre.

I won't spoil anyone's fun (those who haven't seen it yet), but
RAAT is a hodge-podge of THE POLTERGEIST, THE EXORCIST and THE
AMITYVILLE HORROR, but a very tasty hodge-podge, made much more
palatable by the histrionics of Revathi (watch out all you nubile
nymphets, this one can act too), Akash Khurana, Om THE MAN Puri,
and the cute little kid (Thank God the director had the sense to
retain his natural voice and not employ the high octaves of the
housewife regularly called in to do the dubbing for the child
actors in all other films).

Share your thoughts and comments with me about this movie (and any
other recent ones).
