Amin Sayani had a list of his own choice irrespective of
sale of records / popularity . Many popular songs struggled
to show up on this BGM .
k
No, it did not feature either in annual shows of 1954 and 1955, or in
the lists of those songs (that missed out on annual shows) that Ameen
Sayani has published for the ongoing series Geetmala Ki Chhaon Mein.
But I am curious to know why you think it was a hit song of 1954-55.
No, I am not questioning your claim or something, but just wanted to
know if you have any first-hand information of this song being a hit
of its time. I collect this type of 'hit' data for my own ongoing
research on hit songs of HFM.
Asif
The name Chitra should be added to the star-cast, as this
song is picturized on her.
Afzal
And names of Shammi Kapoor and Sumitra Devi should be removed from the
'starring' tag, because they did not star at all in this song.
Asif
I will not go as far as that. In such cases, while archiving a
song, the names of 4 or 5 principal actors may be given. But,
my point is this : the name of the actor (male or female) should
be stated if the song is picturised on him or her. At least in
those cases where the name is known.
Afzal
Afzal Sahab:
I politely disagree with you. This 'starring' tag is only for those
actors and actresses who actually participated in the song (though not
the ones who just look on), and Vinay changed the tag and explained it
too a few years ago. Earlier some lyrics posters, notably Rawat, were
including under this tag (titled something else that I do not recall)
the entire star cast of the film. I was shocked to find Rawat
mentioning even a dog for some lyric - and there was no dog in the
song! Another poster mentioned a cow in some other lyric. But
Rawat's worst crime was removing Helen's name from the song 'aa raat
jaatii hai' (Benaam, 1974) that I had posted with only Amitabh
Bachchan and Helen under this tag - and he edited it to add the entire
film cast minus Helen. It was very annoying to me.
Asif
It may be in later years, not in initial years.
The song sounds great, so thought it would have been liked by
many listeners, then.
I was just 11 years old then and cannot expect that much deep
knowledge, at that age.
Yes, that's the exact point - the ideal way of knowing on whom the
song was filmed. And that's why Vinay changed the tag to 'starring'
and explained it a few years ago. Also, Afzal Sahab says, "while
archiving a song, the names of 4 or 5 principal actors may be given."
I disagree with him. By the same token, names of principal singers
and lyricists (and, in rare cases, music directors) of the film in
question maybe given too under respective tags. Right? But would
that help a curious surfer to figure out who sang the song, wrote it,
composed it, and lip-synched it?
Just as you, as a typical HFM lover, want to know who sang the song
and wrote and composed it, you may also want to know who sang it on
screen, not "who ALL actors and actresses and their dogs, cats, cows,
shoes, and hats were" in this song's film. If lyrics posters continue
to list invariably the SAME data under 'starring' tag for ALL songs of
the SAME film, then this tag becomes utterly meaningless. I hope
lyrics posters see the purpose behind this tag.
Asif
By the way, editors can delete extra names leaving the names of
star/stars on whom the song is picturised.
Another way is to change the tag ' starring ' to ' picturised on '
which leaves no ambiguity.
Those interested in star cast can find from Prithviraj Dasgupta's
Hindi Movie Alphabetical List.
It's a rare day that I find myself in agreement with Asif saahib :)
Today is one of those rare days, for like Asif saahib, I too am of the
confirmed opinion that ONLY the people who had a starring role in the
song should be mentioned, NOT everyone else. For example, I don't
think it's necessary to mention Mohan Choti, for example, in the
starring field of "waqt ne kiya". Likewise, Dev Anand should not be
mentioned in the "starring" field of "yeh bhi koi roothne kaa mausam
hai deewaane" even though he's the hero of Solva Saal. It's not until
several minutes AFTER that song that he makes his first appearance in
the film.

No, not the owner of giitaayan. The "owner" of the ITRANS Song Book
(ISB). I'm sure Vinay will agree with me.
And who owns the ISB? Why, all of us do. It's RMIM-community
property. Let's decide here (on RMIM) what should appear in the
field, and moving forward, use that.
