When you talk about a big star, it need not necessarily mean the
hero/heroine of the film. In this article, we are going to speak of two
famous actors of Hindi film industry who are mainly remembered as comedians,
but during their hey days were as popular as the hero of the film. The two
actors being referred to here are Johnny Walker and Mehmood. They have
carved a niche for themselves in film history and will always be remembered
for their entertaining act. Besides their roles, Johnny Walker and Mehmood
have to their credit many hit songs picturised on them.
During their peak period, mainly in 1950s and 1960s, it was mandatory for a
song to be pitcurised on them, even though they were comedians. Before
starting off on Johnny Walker and Mehmood, it will only be appropriate for
us to remember another great personality - Bhagwan, fondly referred to as
Bhagwan Dada who had created history with his own film Albela starring
himself with Geeta Bali, a film which was a massive hit in 1951. It is
really very sad that he is not amongst us today, but Albela's songs Bhagwan
Dada are evergreen. A trendsetter film, it was a real musical bonanza - hats
off to C.Ramachandra and Rajendra Krishen for their masterpiece work.
Bhagwan's style of dancing became a craze and went on to become a sort of
hallmark. What a variety of classics from Lata Mangeshkar and Chitalkar (C.R
himself) - The romantic 'Mere dil ki ghadi kare...', the stylish 'Bholi
soorat dil ke khote...' , the naughty 'Shaam dhale khidki thale...' , the
foot tapping Shola jo Bhadke dil...' , the pleasing lullaby Dheere se
aajari...'. C.Ramachandra had utilised Mohmmadd Rafi for that breezy duet
with Lata Mehfil mein mere kaun ye deewana...'
Johnny Walker too started off as a hero in Choomantar. All the songs of
Choomantar proved to be very popular, a real treat from O.P.Nayyar, 'Main
tho banke nainonwali...', 'Gam nain kar muskura...', 'Jhoote ka munh
kaala...', 'Humne jab dil ko diya...'and the very big hit 'Gareeb jaanke
humko...' the songs sung by Rafi, Geeta Dutt and Asha Bhonsle. Guru Dutt's
all-time classic Pyaasa...' has a song pitcurised on Johnny Walker, Sar jo
tera chakraye...'. This song is so popular that the song means Johnny
Walker. This song had a lot of message too.
Other popular songs featuring Johnny Walker are 'Zara hatke, zara bachke...'
from C.I.D, Na na na tauba tauba...' from Aarpaar, 'Jane kahan mera jigar
gaya ji...' from Mr & Mrs 55 , Jungle mein mor naacha kisine na dekha...'
from Madhumati, 'Yaaron ki tamanna hai teri zulfon mein...' from Kahin din
kahin raat...' , Main bambai ka babu...' from Naya Daur , 'Mera yaar bana
hai...' from Chaudvin Ka Chand , Sach kehta hai johnny walker...' from Aji
bas shukriya...' , 'Hum Bhi agar bache hotenaam...' from Door ki awaaz...,
Watan ka kya hoga anjaam... from Aadmi aur Insaan.
A film titled Johnny Walker had a popular duet 'Beistiyar hoke pyar ka
shikar...'. Ye Gulistan Hamara had a different type of song which became
popular. Mera naam aao mere paas...' and the playback for Johnny Walker -
our own Danny Denzongpa.
Mehmood's taste for music is remarkable. Mehmood was instrumental and
responsible for giving a breakthrough to new music directors. Rahul Dev
Burman got a break through Chote Nawab which had hits like 'Ghar aaja ghir
aare sajna sanwariya...' and 'Matwali ankhonwali...' R.D.Burman went on to
become one of the most sought after music directors. Mehmood and R.D.Burman
worked together in Bhoot Bangla , Padosan with 'Lakhon mein ek...' from the
latter proving to be a chartbuster.
Rajesh Roshan was another Mehmood discovery through Kunwara Baap. Rajesh
Roshan's music became a big hit with songs like "Main hoon ghoda ye ha gaadi
meri...', 'Saj rahi gali meri amma...' and the very melodious Aari aaja
nindiya tu le...'
Sabse Bada Rupaiya brought forth Basu Manohari as independent music
directors who were assistants to R.D.Burman. This film had popular numbers
like 'Dariya kinare ek bungalow...' , Waada karo jaanam na chodenge ye
daman...' and the Mehmood sung number The whole thing is that ki bhaiya
sabse bada rupaiya...'
Mehmood's popular songs as the hero are Tumhi mere meet ho tumhi mere preet
ho...' , 'Bada khushnaseeb hai...' and Pyase panchi neel gagan mein... all
from Pyase Panchi; 'Aao twist karen..' and Jaago sonewalon suno meri
kahani...' from Bhoot Bangla, 'Chanda o chanda kisne churayi...' and Jogi o
jogi are pyar mein kya hoga...' from Lakhon Mein Ek.
The famous song 'Pipra ke patwa sarike dole manwa'... from Godaan was
pitcurised on Mehmood wherein he played the supporting role. As a comedian,
the song that immediately comes to one's mind is 'Hum kaale hain tho kya
hua...' from Gumnaam. This song was such a big hit that it became synonymous
with Mehmood. There was also an English version of this song, again by Rafi.
Other popular songs featuring Mehmood are : 'Main tere pyar mein kya kya...'
from Ziddi , 'Ajhun na aya balma saawan beeta jaaye...' from Sanjh Aur
Savera, Main marne chala hoon ae husn teri khatir...' from Gunahon Ka Devta
, 'Ek chatur naar karke shringar' from Padosan, 'Jodi hamari jamega kaise
jani...' from Aulad, 'Muthukulika vaarigala are pyar...' from Do Phool.
What "message"? I thought the song had a lot of ... "mAssage".

The song 'humne jab dil ko diya......' is actually "humne jab dil tha
diyaa......". IIRC, it was picturized on Karan Diwan and Shyama. "Jhoote
kaa munh kaala" is not from Chhoo Mnatar, but from Sheikh Chilli, a film
which does not include Johny Walker in the credits.
