Jhoot Boke Kauva Kate - 1998 - Superdigital -no subtitles
Juhi , Anil , Sajjid Khan , Amish Puri
Picture -very good
Sound -good
Sajid Khan of the Ikke pe Ikka countdown program on Zee TV
and brother of Farah Khan perhaps India's best choreographer
has a role in this recently released movie and later made
some good jokes against himself in the program.
The crow which makes a noise and flies about whenever
anybody tells a lie -which is all the time in this comedy
-is apparently a computer animation and not real and if so
then it is very very good . I dont believe it , I dont think
Bollywood special effects are that good yet.
Story of a man (Anil) who takes a job as a servant in his
love's household where the father is overbearing and the
crow upsets his plans all the time.
Somebody said that the reason that the songs are not
subtitled is because poetry does not translate well . What
nonsense ! As long as it is translated literally its great
fun .
There is one song which doesnt need any translation ,
because it is sung in English and in fact should never be
translated back into Hindi ! . It goes like this (letters to
be said out aloud individually)
Please be M, I, N, E - mine , because I shall L, O , V , E -
love you all the T, I , M , E - time ;
Like a L, A , R , K in the P, A, R, K park , I shall K, I ,
S, S -kiss you in the D, A , R, K - dark !
Another song which is quite funny is with the hero , heroine
and two male friends in the jungle setting wondering how to
tell the fearsome father of their love
Aata hai , chawal hai , daal hai , bhook hai , choola nahin
Chrous- Badi mushkil hai !
We have flour , we have rice , we have lentils , we have
hunger but no open oven
Oh what difficulty are we in !!
Badal hai , barkah hai , bijli hai , sawan hai , jhoola
nahin
Badi mushkil hai !
There are clouds , wind , lightening , spring but we have no
swing . Oh what difficulty..
Hum dono hain faryadi , mil jati agar azaadi
Chori chupe na milte , kar lete aaj hi shadi
We are willing , had we been independent
We wouldnt meet in secret , we would have got wed today
Ladka hai , ladki hai , dulha hai , dulhan hai , pandit
nahin
Badi mushkil hai
The girl is here , the male is here , the bride is here ,
the bridegroom is here , the priest is not . Oh what
difficulty are we in !!
Ladka ladki na hote , tum murga murghi hote
Jab chahen tum milte , jahan chaen tum sote
Boy , girl had you not been , had you been cock and hen
Whenever you wanted you could have met , wherever you wanted
you could have slept !
Pehra hai , parda hai , parde mein jalwa hai , halwa nahin
Badi mushkil hai !
There is a guard , you have the veil and behind it the bride
, but there are no sweetmeats. Oh what difficulty !!
female-Us jese ja baand kar sehra aaja (indicating a passing
bridegroom) , ban ja tu mera dulhe raja
Go get a headdress like that and tie it and come dressed as
my bridegroom .
Male-jungle hai , sher hai , cheeta hai , bhaloo hai , ghora
nahin ; badi mushkil hai
There is jungle , there is a lion , there is a tiger , there
is a bear but there is no horse for me to ride to the
wedding - oh what difficulty !!
friends -hai khub tumahari jodi , tum dono chand chakori
kahin dekhi nahin hamne aesi love story
You suit each other like the moon and its light , but we
have never heard a pitiful love story like yours !
hero hai , heroine hai , villain hai , shooting hai ,camera
nahin , badi mushkil hai
the hero is here , the heroine is here , the villain is here
, and we are ready to shoot but we have no camera
Oh what difficulty are we in !!
friend-thodisee main peekar tere baap ko samjaoon
Par darta hun kahin raste mein pakra na jaoon
let me take a drink and go talk to your dad but I am afraid
I might get caught in the way for ..
Whiskey hai m soda hai , pani hai , pyaas hai per permit
nahin , badi mushkil hai !
We have whisky , soda , water , thirst but no permit to
drink it . Oh what difficulty are we in !!
Well it is quite comical ! It proves once you see the song
and follow the literal translation that it can be a lot more
fun watching these movies . I think volunteers on RMIM could
do one a month each and correct the ones done to get these
transferred..
The picture quality on this dvd is
flawless. It has been masterfully transferred from the
original filmnegative resulting in a picture that is perfect
in every way. The DolbyDigital 5.1 sound is used to great
effect in the film and is especially dynamic in the action
scenes and songs (especially "Soldier Soldier")
where sounds bounce from speaker to speaker in perfect
distortion free audio.
"Soldier" also includes a cool main menu where an image of
Bobby Deol with gun shatters like glass being struck by a
bullet every time you select an option. Among the extra
features are subtitles, the theatrical trailor for
"Soldier", a "now available" option with a
detailed synopsis of 20 Eros films.
Along with chapter index and song menu. Some minor gripes:
the subtitles cannot be turned on or off via the remote and
the trailor for "Soldier" appears to be from a videotape
source. All that aside, EROS/DEI should be proud of the job
they've done
in improving the standard of indian dvd making to a higher
level. Lets hope all of their future releases will be as
good.And lets see if this
is the kick in the butt that will get Superdigital and WEG
and others to improve their product as well.Irwin Marin

amazing .
The movie disc sounds a bit flat while the devotional one is
superb - the best sound quality I have heard from the DVD

better ?.
I dont think its the lyrics or the vocals or the
instruments, I think its the method of recording. I am sure
the prayerdisc was recorded in a live setting and that is
why itsounds so rich and deep with a wider range of
frequencieswhile the movie CD was probably recorded in a

Widescreen is superior. Half the TV screen is blank, but you see 100%
of the picture.

At first, I agree, there is a major impact seen when watching a pan and
scan (full screen) movie, but when you realise what you are missing, the
impact vanishes

I don't know where you get the idea that the body shapes are distorted.
When you watch a movie in the cinema, it is widescreen. Are the body
shapes distorted? No. Try watching a widescreen version of a movie and
then watching the pan and scan version. The difference is astounding.
I used to be one of those people who hated widescreen and the "black
bars". Now that the majority of titles on DVD (both bollywood and
hollywood) are widescreen, I have come to appreciate it. Now I hate
watching pan and scan. Try visiting this web page with an open mind:
http://www.philipwilliams.com/widescreen/
It may or may not convert you. Some die hard pan and scan fans won't
change but I am sure that it will increase your awareness of exactly how
much you are missing.

Is this really true? I thought they had some 'region' coding, with North
America being Region 1. I am not sure if all DVD players can play DVDs
from different regions.

Toshiba Introduces Fourth-Generation DVD-Video Players with
Colorstream Pro and HDCD Decoding
Toshiba America Consumer Products today demonstrated its leadership in
DVD-Video
technology with the introduction of four new fourth-generation
DVD-Video players for 1999. The new models include two players with
HDCD decoding for high-resolution CD playback, as well as the
industry’s first player equipped with a ColorStream PRO (480P) output.
Additional convenience and performance features in the lineup include
Toshiba’s unique Dual Disc Twin-Tray transport system, ColorStream
component video outputs, built-in Dolby Digital decoding and more.
Three new players (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109) join Toshiba’s first Cinema
Series Model SD9000 to round out the industry’s most comprehensive,
high-performance DVD-Video player lineup.
Toshiba Makes The ColorStream Connection
Toshiba, the first company to include ColorStream component video
outputs on its DVD-Video players, now includes this state-of-the-art
image-enhancing feature in all new players (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109,
SD9000). When connected to one of Toshiba’s 30 component-video
equipped color TVs, a component video connection delivers superior
color fidelity, unmatched color purity, detail and resolution, as well
as a reduction of moire and other NTSC artifacts.
“Toshiba’s leadership in developing high-resolution monitors, displays
and high-quality source components is evidenced by our inclusion of
ColorStream Component Video in all our DVD-Video players, as well as
more than 30 color TVs,” noted Steve Nickerson, Toshiba Vice President
of Video Marketing. “The ColorStream Component Video connection is the
ideal interface between a digital video source and an analog display
device.”
Toshiba Is First With ColorStream PRO Progressive Scan
Toshiba is the first manufacturer to demonstrate the benefits of
progressive scan (480p) technology in a DVD-Video player, and this
year the company is including ColorStream PRO outputs in its new
SD5109* player. ColorStream PRO delivers the maximum image resolution
possible from the DVD-Video format. When connected to a Toshiba
ColorStream PRO equipped TV or other 480p-capable display device, the
SD5109 provides a three-dimensional, film-like and flicker-free
picture, minus visible NTSC line structure. A progressively scanned
display is also characterized by enhanced vertical and temporal
resolution, improved brightness without any compromise in color or
contrast, plus the ability to sit even closer to the screen.
Noted Nickerson: “Toshiba is leading the way in ColorStream PRO
because we understand the value and importance of this technology for
the DVD-Video format. By offering the maximum display resolution
possible from the DVD format, progressive scan extends the viability
of DVD in the digital broadcast era. And most importantly, it
brings us one step closer to reproducing the filmmaker’s original
vision, impact and intent.”
Dual Disc Transport For “Double-Feature” Home Theater Enjoyment
For maximum convenience and flexibility, Toshiba’s new SD5109 and
SD3109 DVD players feature the company’s innovative Dual Disc
Twin-Tray Transport System. This unique system permits users to load
two DVD discs into the player at the same time and play them in
succession for uninterrupted viewing of multi-disc DVD titles. And for
the ultimate in “double-feature” home theater enjoyment, viewers may
also watch two movies in sequence without having to stop and change
discs. Additionally, users may enjoy the convenience of loading a DVD
movie alongside an audio CD and select between film and music
programming.
Fourth-Generation Technologies For Improved Pictures and Sound
Toshiba’s fourth-generation DVD-Video players incorporate the
industry’s most advanced digital technologies for exceptional picture
and sound quality. All models (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109, SD9000) feature
10-bit video D/A conversion and 27MHz advanced high-resolution digital
filters. This design yields D/A conversion that is four times more
accurate than conventional systems, resulting in an artifact-free,
high-resolution image.
Every new Toshiba DVD player (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109, SD9000) is
further distinguished by a performance feature first introduced in the
company’s second-generation players – the ability to reproduce
“Blacker Than Black” PLUGE signals. PLUGE compatibility is a critical
feature for maintaining the optimum brightness setting in a properly
calibrated home theater system. And Video Black Level Expansion in all
players significantly improves contrast on all DVD-Video programming
by offering viewers two choices for Black cutoff: Normal (7.5 IRE) or
Expanded (0 IRE).
Each new Toshiba DVD-Video player (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109, SD9000)
also features leading-edge digital audio capabilities for unsurpassed
home theater surround sound audio performance and flexibility. All
four players include Dolby Digital and DTS compatibility for total
surround sound flexibility, as well as 24-bit/96kHz PCM audio
processing for high-resolution playback of the latest 2-channel
24-bit/96kHz DVD audio discs. In addition, most new players employ
Burr-Brown D/A converters (DACs) in a multi-port parallel
configuration. This unique system filters the L/R audio signals three
times to achieve ultra-low distortion, improved signal to noise ratio
and dynamic range greater than 112dB. The result is warmer, richer
decoding of all high-resolution digital sources.
Toshiba’s new DVD players (SD2109, SD3109, SD5109, SD9000) offer a
full complement of digital optical and coaxial audio outputs and
analog outputs, as well as parallel output of all video signals,
affording maximum flexibility in home theater and multi-room
applications. All video outputs operate in parallel, allowing total
connection flexibility, with the ability to route the audio and video
signals to multiple TV sets and rooms.
Industry’s First Widely Distributed DVD Players With HDCD Decoding
The new Toshiba SD5109 and SD3109 DVD-video players are the first
widely distributed DVD-Video players to include HDCD (High Definition
Compatible Digital) decoding for CD playback, providing users with the
full sonic benefits of the increasingly popular HDCD format. The HDCD
process extends the resolution of HDCD-encoded CDs to a 20-bit level,
exceeding the 16-bit standard CD format. The result is a more natural
musical presentation, greater dynamic range and a wider, deeper
soundstage. And thanks to its precision digital filtering, HDCD
compatibility also improves the sound of standard CDs.
Toshiba’s SD5109 and SD3109 DVD players are equipped with built-in
Dolby Digital decoders for Dolby Digital surround sound playback when
connected to a Dolby Digital-ready receiver. Unlike some players with
built-in Dolby Digital decoding, Toshiba’s new players offer on-screen
control of all key surround sound performance parameters, including
speaker management, bass management and time delay, providing users
with nearly the same level of multi-channel control as offered in
sophisticated stand-alone processors.
For movie enthusiasts who wish to experience theater-like surround
sound using just their TV’s built-in loudspeakers or a basic
two-channel system, every Toshiba DVD player includes Spatializer
N-2-2 sound enhancement. This process employs advanced digital
circuitry to create a virtual multi-channel surround sound environment
from just two speakers. Unlike lesser approaches, Spatializer N-2-2
produces the most natural virtual surround sound available, with an
ideal proportion of stereo, dialog and wrap-around surround sound
effects.
Advanced Ergonomics For Total User Convenience
Toshiba is also demonstrating its leadership in ergonomic design for
1999. The company’s highly praised Ergonomic Remote Control has been
redesigned with fluorescent keypads for easy use in low-light home
theater environments, and the Cinema Series SD9000 features a special
backlight on the remote. In addition, a newly designed florescent
front panel on all players provides easy display readability, and the
Model SD5109 features full front-panel menu operation.
The SD2109—Breaking New Ground In High-Performance DVD-Video
The new Toshiba SD2109 sets a benchmark in high-performance and
high-value DVD-Video players. With Dolby Digital and DTS
compatibility, 24-bit/96kHz audio capability, ColorStream component
video outputs, video black level expansion and other advanced
features, the SD2109 offers unparalleled performance and features for
the ultimate in home theater value.
“Toshiba’s DVD-Video lineup for 1999 offers the highest quality, value
and innovation in the industry,” noted Nickerson, “while giving
consumers the most choice. Each product is designed to fill a
particular consumer need while defining excellence in the DVD-Video
category.”

Perhaps you can explain in what ways Raveena is a better dancer than Helen.
Helen is an institution in herself as far as dancers in Hindi films are
concerned, and even when she played the vamp, the stigma of her on-screen roles
never put a blemish on her real life persona. She was one of the most respected
artistes, and even to this day commands respect in the film industry. No other
dancer/vamp has the track record or the kind of screen presence that she had.
To say that Helen could not dance in tune with the music is negating an entire
era of dancing in Hindi films. You mean to say she managed to fool both the
public and experts for decades with her out-of tune dancing?

Mr and Mrs Khiladi -WEG - 1997 -no subtitles
Picture quality -good only in parts
Sound - okay
I think this has been mastered on single layer , hence the
not so good resolution except maybe is some songs .
Highlights are the song - ' I will love you as long as there
is potato in samosas ' and Akshay wrestling with the real
life world Sumo chamipon .
Jai Santoshi Ma-1970s- no subtitles -WEG
Picture quality -awful
Sound - not good
This is one of the top hits of all time . Story of a woman
who becomes a devotee of Santoshi Maa - a new Goddess
invented in the last 50 years -much to the displeasure of
the three other Goddesses - Parvati , Laxmi and Brahmani who
then try to make her life a misery .
This is the kind of movie that could be a smash hit on DVD
and make the format truly popular amongst the millions of
devout Hindus , if they got the same picture and sound
quality as the even older Khandan by Tseries , but WEG have
made a complete mess of it . Even taping from TV and then
putting it on DVD would have been better than this junk .
Dont even rent it ..
BTW was KKHH a 5.1 sound??
Dushman -1998 - Eros , DEI - English subtitles
Kajol , Kajol , Sunjay , Ashutosh
Picture quality -very good
Sound- good -Dolby digital
A superb performance by the serial rapist killer postman
Ashutosh Rana . I have already nominated him for best
villain (www.zeetelevision.com) on Zee cine awards . So good
that the postmen went on strike for a while to protest
against it .
The great song lamenting the death of a loved one ' No
letter , no message . What kind of a place is this that you
have gone to ?' is a bit spoilt by having Kajol play her own
dead sister . Otherwise an interesting movie .Sunjay Dutt
is the blind ex officer who trains her to stand up to bad
guys.
In the review of the DVD -MAMK -forgot to mention the
amazing talking goat which can answer simple questions like
-'Who is the goat , you or me ?' and 'What comes after
April ?' and which Akshay sells for a huge sum..
This illustrates why DVD is going to be an absolute gold
mine for Bollywood and other South Asian producers IF they
can get the quality right .
It is already India's biggest export , one day I will have
figures to prove it , but in the meantime just multiply 10m
NRIs with 20 movies a year at say $5 and then add the Zee,
magazines , cassettes etc. sold , but it will all pale when
compared to DVD.
For example I might have spent $500 on movies a year but my
DVD collection has already cost me $3000 for the Bollywood
ones and $1000 for Hollywood ( Mars Attack , Contact (truly
excellent ) ) . I am down to one meal a day to compensate !
Niraj wanting to buy the DVD after watching the movie is
going to become quite common and most will buy to own rather
than rent .
The GOI must really step and impose controls not on the
creative content but on technical aspects . Putting out bad
quality prints like Lamhe , Jai Santoshi Ma or Superhits is
just taking advantage of the customer .
All movies that get an export certificate and tax credits
should be mastered from original negatives , over 500 lines
resolution on dual layers , with Dolby 5.1 AND subtitles in
six languages which the GOI should do for the company by
appointing six linguist scholars full time . If they
translated the dialog literally it would show the world what
masters of their craft the Urdu dialog writers of India are.
English -as it is THE world language , Hindi, Urdu for hard
of hearing and for second generation NRIs and first
generation English medium school Indians to learn the script
again , Arabic -as they are popular in the middle east and
Spanish . In California I have seen many Hindi movie
theatres in Hispanic areas -also I would suggest that the
language be kept simple and not Sanskritized too much .
Sanskrit is like German - keep attaching syllables until the
word is over 100 letters long and gives a headache just
pronouncing it ! If the GOI can impose strict quality
controls it could take a share of this gold mine.
Ram Balram -1980 -English subtitles -Eros DEI
Amitabh, Zeenat , Rakhee, Vinod
Picture quality - okay
Sound-good
Cops and robbers , havent seen it yet . With Zeenat it
should be good
Muqudar Ka Sikander -1978 -Eros DEI -English subtitles
Picture -good
Sound- very good
Rekha , Zeenat , Amitabh ,Amjad ,Dharmendra
More cops and robbers . Havent seen it .
If T series can bring out such an excellent picture from a
1950s movie with Khandan there is no reason why DEI cant do
the same . Scratchy prints are not a good idea . Probably
better off to rent these two movies for those who are Zeenat
fans .
Aflatoon - 1998 - WWE -no subtitles
Akshay , Urmilla
Picture quality -Awful
Sound -okay
No excuse to bring out a DVD with such bad picture quality ,
its probably a single layer . Story of a poor ruffian
determined to trap and marry a rich girl .
SATYA- DEI/EROS-1998, 5.1 dolby digital,english
subtitles,175 minutes.
The latest dvd release from DEI/EROS is Ram Gopal Verma's
critically
acclaimed crime drama "Satya" and it is given a first-class
treatment
which is, of late, becoming commonplace from DEI/EROS.
Giving the dvd
consumer more than a no-frills product, which companies like
Superdigital and WEG have been dumping on the consumer, is
one sure way
to attract and keep new customers. For instance, where else
can you get
such cool main menu graphics like they give you in the
"Satya" dvd.
Press DVD menu and you get an image of "Satya" star
J.D.Chakravarthy
pointing a gun straight at you. Select an option and you
hear the sound
of 3 gunshots followed by smoke oozing out the gun barrel
and a jigsaw
puzzle dismantling of the image as you head to your
destination.
Subtitles, song menu, chapter index, play movie, upcoming
dvd releases,
and details of currently available dvd releases are
available at your
fingertips. Set in Mumbai, this is the
story of Satya
(Chakravorty) who comes to the big city to earn a living but
is soon
drawn into the Mumbai underworld. He eventually meets and
falls in love
with Vidya (Urmilla Matondkar, excellent in a small role)
which
complicates the life he has been living and what he hopes
for their
future. "Satya" is a violent and realistic crime drama with
excellent
perfomances by all. Expertly directed by Verma, one of
bollywood's most
inventive directors. The video picture is excellent, on par
with
DEI/EROS superbly done "Soldier." The 5.1 audio is in a
word-
sensational. During a violent gun battle with police,
bullets fly from
speaker to speaker, from front to back and side to side. It
was so
realistic I almost felt like ducking for cover, myself. The
backgrond
music by Vishal is stirring, and the songs are melodious and
memorable.
Especially "Gholi Mar", "Sapne Mein," and "Baadlon Se." Lata
Mangeshkar
and the other singers excel. A must-have dvd. "Satya" is not
yet
available at most outlets, but can be purchased directly
from DEI at:
www.indianfilmsdvd.com

Alexander the Great is considered a mighty conqueror in
India. The subtitler for this movie who has done a fantastic
job and his name should be in the movie credits translates
the last two lines as
While at the doorsteps of death
The one who , to the world teaches the way to live
Will be called the conqueror of destiny
Soldier -1998 - Eros DEI - English subtitles -Dolby 5.1
Picture quality - very good
Sound - Perfect .
Not much more that I can add to Irwin's excellent and
informative post on this DVD . I think Superdigital
(Gharwali , Dukhe Raja etc. ) still have a slight edge in
picture detail but their sound cannot match DEI and there is
not much in it . Even DEI -Khalynayak and Mohra had
excellent picture quality. It would be interesting to hear
other people's comments on the picture and sound quality .
Subtitling seems accurate but then this one doesnt have as
much Urdu poetry as MKS. If the DVD makers want to make big
sales they have to subtitle the songs and in many languages
as these movies are popular all over the world but people
are not going to buy them if they cant understand the
songs..

In memoriam
Placido P D'Souza salutes the memory of Indrani Rehman, the
famed dancer who passed into the ages last fortnight
It is somewhat surprising that little, if any, attention has
been paid by the Indian media to the passing away of Indrani
Rehman earlier this month in New York. She was certainly a
renowned exponent of Indian classical dance in her time --
one of the all-time greats in her line who did not let
advancing age stop her from promoting Bharat Natyam
overseas.
Her name hit the headlines when she won the Miss India title
some time in the '50s. At that time, this contest was
something of a novelty, and pictures of Indrani in a
classical dance pose were on the front pages of almost every
newspaper.
Little did I realise then -- still at university -- that I
would be meeting Indrani in person. This took place when I
was appointed Indian consul-general in New York in the early
'80s. She came for one of the functions organised by the
consulate and I found her a friendly person, anxious and
willing to help us in our work.
One of the "perks" of being the Indian consul-general in New
York is the opportunity to visit Puerto Rico and the US
Virgin Islands in the Caribbean for Republic Day
celebrations by Indian communities there. This has been a
tradition for many years now, and provides welcome relief
from the winter in New York.
During my first visit to Puerto Rico, an Indian professor at
the university complained that nothing was being done to
make the people aware of India's rich cultural heritage. He
said he would be happy to organise something in this area
with help from the consulate.
On my return to New York, I spoke to Indrani Rehman about
the possibility of her giving a dance performance in Puerto
Rico the following year. She responded enthusiastically and,
along with her daughter Sukanya, accompanied me to the
island the following January.
Her performances at the university and on television were
highly acclaimed, and I am grateful for her help in
providing the inhabitants of Puerto Rico with a glimpse of
India's culture. It was particularly gratifying to have
someone like her on that trip as she was most charming and
friendly towards all those that she met -- quite unlike some
other artistes that I have had to handle in my overseas
assignments.
We kept in touch thereafter, off and on, exchanging
Christmas and New Year greetings. During the last few years,
whenever I visited the United States, I would call her and
chat about what she was doing and what the Indian cultural
scene was like in New York.
Last summer, she told me about her work of teaching and
training American girls in Indian classical dance. She
invited me to attend an open-air performance by two of them
in a park in downtown Manhattan.
It was a fine performance -- a tribute to Indrani's own
expertise and teaching skills. In fact, I would not have
realised that the girls that were dancing that evening were
Americans had she not told me.
I congratulated her on her achievement and we talked about
the other Indian cultural events that were taking place in
New York at that time. She was grateful for having finally
received the video cassette of her dance performance in
Puerto Rico -- something I had misplaced in my wanderings
around the world.
More recently I wrote to her about a survey that our journal
New India Digest was conducting with prominent individuals
on the subject of India and the coming millennium. There was
some delay in her reply.
She finally sent a fax in December, explaining that a stroke
had kept her in hospital for over a month. In spite of her
illness she was determined to go on working, and wrote: "I
am on medication for life but hope to continue teaching with
an assistant, and promoting good dancers as usual."
Her responses to the questionnaire were short and to the
point. According to Indrani, India's principal achievement
in the preceding century had been to hold free and fair
elections. Its major failure -- religious fundamentalism.
On the question of her concerns for the future, she wrote:
"I fear India, once great, will not reach greatness
internationally next year, in spite of brilliant
individuals" and felt the fault lay with corrupt
politicians.
It is a pity that one who had done so much during her
lifetime to increase awareness of Indian culture abroad
should have passed away somewhat pessimistic about the
nation's future.

MUMBAI: The battlelines have been drawn, with less than 24
hours left for the war to begin. Where else can you watch
titans clashing headlong for honour and trophies?
The 44th Filmfare Awards night has set the stage and it is
for Sunday night to show what the outcome of the battle will
be --who will return home bearing triumphant trophies and
who will wait for another year, another round of rivalry.
Who wins and who loses will depend as much on the prowess of
the combatants as on the will and voice of the people. So it
has been and so it shall always be. Therein lies the charm,
the unpredictability, and the rub.
It is only when it is time for the stars to come out that it
will be known who this year's favourites are, though there
is no secret about the titans who wait in the wings, waging
their battle of hope.
The three major Khans are there, staking their claim to the
title of best actor, along with Govinda and Ajay Devgan. And
it is anybody's guess whether it is the endearing Tapori of
Ghulam or the completely believable charmer of Pyaar To Hona
Hi Tha, or that unbeatable, every movie buff's favourite
Govinda, who will romp home triumphant. On the other hand,
it is as likely that Dame Luck will favour Salman in Pyaar
Kiya To Darna Kya or Shah Rukh in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
Tough competition also marks the award of the best actress.
Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar are pitted against
Kajol, who is pitted against herself--after all, she has
three nominations.
Vying for the best actor in a supporting role are actors of
no mean merit either. The Khans find a footing here too,
with kid brother Arbaaz Khan making his second bid at the
awards after Daraar for his role of the possessive elder
brother in Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, pitting his claim
against big brother Salman in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Thespian
Naseeruddin Shah shows his acting mettle in China Gate as
the upright man on a mission of vengeance. Om Puri, no mean
claimant at the awards, has his place in the list for Pyaar
To Hona Hi Tha as does Manoj Bajpai for his performance as
Bhiku Mhatre in Satya.
On the flip side of the supporting role coin, veteran
actress Raakhee in Soldier vies with Tanvi Azmi in Dushman,
Rani Mukherjee in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Preity Zinta in Dil Se
and Shefali Chhaya in Satya.
For the best performer in a comic role, the clash is between
Johny Lever with two nominations and Kadar Khan and Anupam
Kher hoping to add to their list of Filmfare trophies. The
only female contender for comedy is Archana Puran Singh. Kya
Baat Hai, she might have said in another avatar.
Villainy finds many forms..from the smooth-talking Shah Rukh
Khan in Duplicate to the menace of Mukesh Tiwari in China
Gate, Govind Namdeo in Satya, Sharat Saxena in Ghulam and
Ashuthosh Rana in Dushman.
As for the best film and the best director, it is that
classic clash between the new and the old, between the
veteran and the freshers. So, Ramgopal Varma's Satya, Karan
Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Sohail Khan's Pyaar Kiya To
Darna Kya, Vikram Bhatt's Ghulam compete for Best Director
along with Abbas Mastaan for Soldier.
The trophies wait, the storm clouds rumble and the suspense
mounts. The Critics' Awards for Best Film and powerhouse
performance have gained super stature over the years.
Applauded by the discriminating as well as the ticket-buying
janta, the Critics' Awards are hotly contested.
Tomorrow is the night when the drama will unfold again,
conveying the power and glory of cinema. There will be a new
breed of winners and a new batch of victories. Yet another
chapter will be written in the history of films and the
Filmfare awards.
The Manikchand Group will be sponsoring the show for the
sixth consecutive year.

The material in this article is irrelevant for RMIM.
It does, however, remind one that there isn't equivalent
interest in the awards related to music.
Come on, folks (at least those of you who follow the
recent music). Let us have some speculations. And
quickly!
And, noticed that while the names are a yawn in the music
director and lyricist categories, some unfamiliar (to me)
names have shown up in the playback singer categories.
Any opinions/further information?

On second thoughts, no thanks.
Does the popularity of just one song make him a PLAYBACK SINGER? Does that
tell us something about how far (south) the FF nominations can go? Shouldn't
the FF board supervising the nominations have cut it off? I hope the panel
selecting the award winners does.
Happy listenings.

The movie was made in 1994, not 1984. I don't think Madhuri
was a big star yet. Regardless, a great movie. The songs are
wonderful, the acting was good, the story great. A definte keeper
in terms of DVD.

GO RED SOX!!!!
Since he himself sang the song on the screen, should
he even be called a PLAYBACK singer ?

But, JL will take it, given that they have two nominations, and probably
for that awful KKHH.

Interesting to see aamir khan, kamaal khan and sukhwinder here. I think
shukhwinder for 'chaiya chaiya' deserves it. But aamir might get it, after
all the Great Lady herself said that he sang this song in "sur".

isn't jaspinder narula the one who did the duet(with sanjeevani) in 'kareeb'?
if she is, then she definitely has a very good voice. probably alka will get
it for 'chamma chamma' - she has two nominations!

While Dil Se has had its share of such popular chartbusters like Chal chhaiyyan
chhaiyyan.... and ai ajnabi tu bhii kabhie, now one, not one music critic from
any of the movie magazines has drawn the attention to the fact that ARR copied
the Chaiyyan chaiyyan from the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Ai ajnabi has
opening refrains from "dhiire chal dhiire chal ai bhigi hawa" from Boy Friend.
It may be a personal problem for me, but I cannot enjoy the compositions when I
am trying to find a reason for the tune having been copied.
Soldier's Anu Malik does nothing but get 'inspired' from various sources, so my
vote does not go for him, either. Viju Shah did not show much imagination for
BMCM either. Pedestrian music, at best.
That leaves Jatin Lalit, by default. Among the two films for which they have
been nominated, KKHH has the more refreshing music, IMO, even though it is so
close to listening to DDLJ all over again.

I am voting against chaiyyan chaiyyan for the same reason - not original
lyrics. And what do you make of ''..jiski zubaan urdu ki tarah''. I would
have imagined such wording coming more from PK Misra/Mehboob, ARR's stock
lyricists for his Hindi film compositions. Wonder why "jiya jale jaan jale.."
was not even among the voted lyrics. It has much better, Gulzar style poetry
in "nainon tale dhuaan chale, raat bhar duaan chale..".
Ai ajnabi is obviously my choice here, since none of the other three have any
thing lyrical worthwhile to write anywhere about, except situational expediency
for the films.

Aamir Khan, I have already written about in a separate post. Kamal Khan may
have hit the paydirt wihis O o jaane jaana, but he does render the song out of
'sur' at places. Kumar Sanu for the ladki badi anjaani hai in KKHH may have
sung it well, going by the popularity charts, but somehow, personally, I can't
vote for him. :))) Udit Narayan has sung the title KKHH song very well, with
Alka Yagnik, and my choice is for them in their individual categories.

She brings in this song the "Punjabi lehakaa". I liked her rendition. To some
hers is shrill voice. But if we could withstand Sharada, she is no comparison
to her.
>SANJEEVANI (Chori chori jab nazren mili...Kareeb)
Ah! Sanjeev Rambhadaran can talk more about her as I guess he shared stage with
Sanjeevani xxx-ker (forgot her surname). She is from Maharashtra and the reason
I admire her is she is big fan of Anil Biswas. She was the one who brought songs
like 'Ik Pal Ruk Jana' and 'Ja Main To Se Nahi Bolun' to TVS Sa Re Ga Ma. She
reached in the Mega Final and lost to a very good singer called Bela (IIRC).
Sanjeevani got her break in films through TVS Sa Re Ga Ma. When V V Chopra
was looking for fresh voice he accidentally found the voice he was looking for
in TVS Sa Re Ga Ma. That was she.

I hope you got my meaning. There isn't a hindi film song I **really** like
that was recorded in 80s or 90s.
And, yes, in strict sense its not playback either ( its altogether a
different matter whether its "singing" at all ). For eg. when we say 'Dil
Jalta Hai' is Mukesh's first song as a playback singer ... it is excluding
the songs he recorded for roles he was enacting himself.

My votes:
(note: I do not necessarily like these songs so much as to consider them
for awards. Am just picking one out of the available choices. "a.Ndho.n

Tough choice. I am struggling between selecting ARR or JL for PTHHT. If
Rahman sounds repetitive so does JL. KKHH reminds you of Kabhi haan kabhi
na, JJWS and DDLJ. BMCM doesn't even deserve to be in this list. One would
expect V.Shah to do a bit better. Ditto Soldier.

I am surprised that Soldier found a place in MD list and Duplicate didn't
for "mere mehboob mere sanam"! In any case nothing out of the ordinary
anyway. Sameer's lyrics for KKHH are at best amateurish. The kind that
would appeal to Mills & Boon readers. The title line "kuch kuch hota
hai" is evidence enough.
Award goes to - Gulzar for "ai ajnabi"

The question about Aamir's nomination for playback singing, IMO is moot.
Play ack singing doesn't mean a song sung by a person for an actor on
screen. It just means that it is a song recorded in a music studio on
which the actor lip synchs on screen. ANd the singer can very well be the
actor himself. Gone are the days when the dialogues were recorded right
off of the shooting. These days even they are play backed by the actors
themselves. In this category its really a choice between Kamaal and
Sukhwinder.
award goes to - Kamaal Khan for "o o jaane jana"
I am surprised that Udit is nominated for "tum paas aaye" and not for "ai
ajnabi". "tum paas aaye" is the kind of a song we have heard from Udit a
millon times. "ai ajnabi" was a bit different, more suited for Sonu Nigam
and Udit did well too.

I am unable to make a selection here since I haven't heard Sanjeevani's
song in kareeb. I will eliminate Alka Yagnik and Sapna awasthi for I don't
favor their nominated songs. So had I heard the songs of kareeb, it would
have been a choice between Sanjeevani and Jaspinder for me. No Kavita this
time!
just curious, was Sapna Awasthi nominated for Pardes last year? I think
she did a much better job there than in "chal chaiyyan".

It always seems that great singers are nominated for mediocre performances, and

I mean, Udit being nominated for "Tum paas aye" but NOT for his gorgeous -- and

The Times of India News Service
MUMBAI: The film industry's glitterati - from veteran
thespians to budding starlets - converged at the Andheri
Sports Complex in Mumbai on Sunday evening to celebrate the
44th Filmfare Awards function, the event that salutes the
best in the business.
The evening began on a sombre note, with a tribute to the
chairperson of The Times of India Group Ashok Jain, who
passed away on February 4. It was Mr Jain's belief that `the
show must go on timelessly' that set the mood for the event-
packed occasion.
The tension was palpable and the competition stiff for the
coveted awards. While five heroes, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan,
Shah Rukh Khan, Govinda and Ajay Devgan, vied for the Best
Actor's award, Kajol was pitted against herself, with three
nominations for the Best Actress trophy. The other
contenders for this prize are Manisha Koirala and Urmila
Matondkar.
The hits of 1998 - Satya , Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Pyaar Kiya To
Darna Kya, Ghulam and Soldier - were contenders for the Best
Film. Their directors, Ramgopal Varma, Karan Johar, Sohail
Khan, Vikram Bhatt and Abbas Mastaan, respectively, are
keeping their fingers crossed, hoping to be chosen the Best
Director of the year.
The star-spangled function was anchored with panache by
compere Nikhil Kapoor. Accompanied by a host of beauty
queens and actresses, including Tara Deshpande, Namrata
Shirodkar, Femina Miss India Universe '99 Gul Panag, Shilpa
Shetty, former Miss World Diana Hayden and Karisma Kapoor,
he held the audience captive with his lively presentation.
Artistes flew in from all parts of the world to entertain
the mammoth audience at the venue as well as the star-struck
millions who watched their favourites on television. The
show was kicked off with a jugalbandi by tabla maestro Zakir
Hussain and pop singer Remo Fernandes. The internationally
acclaimed reggae band UB40, Bhangra rap artiste Malkit Singh
and fusion artiste Vikrant, backed by the four-member
Anglo-Asian group DIP, kept the crowds swaying to their
foot-tapping numbers.
Film artistes, including Aishwarya Rai, Sonali Bendre, Shah
Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Malaika Arora-Khan, brought
the stage to life with their electrifying acts. Comic relief
was provided by Johnny Lever, while Gulshan Grover excelled
with his villainous stunts.
The audience was on the edge of its seats when the Canadian
duo Acrobasia comprising Christian Paquet and Jean Francoise
Martel performed gravity-defying gymnastic feats.
Veteran actor Manoj Kumar and dancing sensation of
yesteryear Helen were felicitated with the Lifetime
Achievement Awards. Shekhar Kapur, who went global with his
Elizabeth, was honoured with a Special Award.
In the technical award categories, which were announced last
week, H. Sridhar bagged the best sound recording award for
Satya. The film also won the trophy for best editing (Apurva
Asrani and Bhanu Daya) and background music (Sandeep
Chowtha). Sharmishta Roy was awarded the prize for best art
direction (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) and Santosh Sivan the best
cinematography trophy (Dil Se). Soldier won the best action
award (Akbar Bakshi) while Rajkumar Santoshi and K.K. Raina
bagged the prize for best dialogue in China Gate. Karan
Johar walked away with the best screenplay award for Kuch
Kuch.. Mahesh Bhatt's sensitive love story, Zakhm, won the
best story award.
The film Tu Tithe Mi won all the popular awards in the
Marathi section, including best film, best director (Sanjay
Soorkar), best actress (Suhas Joshi), best actor (Mohan
Joshi) and best music (Anand Modak). In a break with the
past, the Marathi awards were also announced in advance of
Sunday's show.
The function, which was sponsored by the Manikchand Group
for the sixth consecutive year, will be re-telecast on the
Sony Entertainment Television channel on Monday night at
9.10 p.m. Coca Cola provided the beverages and Monginis the
refreshments for the evening. The transportation was by
Adarsh Rent-A-Car and the communication facilities by Max
Touch Cellular Phone service.
Mohranis and Soorma directed the star acts which were
choreographed by Ganesh Hegde. The sound, lights and other
effects were set up by Wizcraft, which also presented UB40.
The show was rehearsed at the Hotel Sea Princess.
Sanora-Times Music Associates also helped with the show.

NEW DELHI, Feb 24 (AFP) - A celebrated Indian classical
musician
on Wednesday hit out at MTV and Western pop music for
corrupting
young Indians.
Vilayat Khan, one of India's leading sitar players, told
the
Hindustan Times daily that the songs aired by MTV (Music
Television)
were obscene and meaningless.
"(It is) music for the eyes and not the ears," he said.
"I have
to close my eyes in shame every when I see television these
days.
"Unless something is done, it can lead to an identity
problem
for us, signs of which are already there. I feel sad to see
people
running after small things when there is such a wealth of
cultural
traditions in India."
Khan's outburst echoed a theme espoused by many senior
politicians in the ruling Hindu nationalist party, that
western
satellite television channels and music are undermining
Indian
traditions and social mores.
Khan also slammed experiments in Western and Indian music
as a
futile exercise.
"It does not gel ... fusion music is confusio music. How
can the
East and West meet when even our own music traditions in
north and
south India are so hugely different from each other?"
Pankaj
: I find Vilayat Khan's comments about fusion music hard to stomach. I
: guess he is too old to adjust to new styles of music anymore, but
: considering that he is a musician I would have expected better.
Many classical muscians, both Western and Eastern, have a certain
disdain for new forms of music. Classical musicians in the west
had low opinions of jazz in the 1920s, but now jazz is considered
the greatest Americal art form.
AIUI, the major obstacle to recordable DVD currently is the politics of
it, as the studios are terrified of the piracy potential. If the copy
protection on DVD's was as good as you suggest, then I doubt there would
be this level of paranoia.
In reality, all that is required is a system to prevent Joe Public from
renting a title from the local video store and recording it onto a blank
at home. They should know by now that no copy protection system will
stop PC users from copying titles with recordable DVD drives, history
has shown that everything can be got around sooner or later.

Oh my god, I thought I was the only one who found the music to KKHH stinky
(except for the passable "Saajan ki ghar aye").
Thanks for the post!

Ravi Shankar with daughter Anoushka at a Press conference.
Photo: Pradeep Bhatia Noted sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar who
was recently given Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award
of the country, today said that he would like to score music
for films provided he was given an opportunity to do so.
He was talking to the mediapersons before his concert in the
Capital on his music, inspiration and influence. Pandit Ravi
Shankar, who is considered a phenomenon in the classical
music all over, said that he was not much inspired by
fusion. “I did not do anything which changed the Indianness
of the music-the raga and the tal,” he said. Talking about
the younger generation who have taken to classical music, he
said some of them have really come up well and are extremely
talented. In a reference to his daughter Anoushka Shankar,
he said that the present kids are a lot more sensible.
“However,” he added, “very few children of illustrious
classical musicians and singers took to the vocation of
their fathers".
According to him, dedication and sanskars were essentials to
succeed in the field. The sitarist who claims to have
composed Sare Jahan se acchha in 1945 and has been awarded
with some of the highest musical awards all over the world,
paid glowing tributes to his guru Baba Allauddin Khan and
described him as one of the best sitarists ever. He also
praised Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Abdul Hamid Khan, Rameshwar
Pathak, Inayat Khan, amongst others who were excellent
sitarists. When asked about the allegations that he lobbied
hard for the Bharat Ratna, the sitarist simply said that he
came to know about the award only after a call from the
President's office “The laurels came to him without any
lobbying but only due to his brilliance with the sitar," his
wife added.
Popular Asian television network Zee TV is spreading its
wings further with plans to gain greater visibility in
Canada, Holland, Germany and Portugal and launch of two more
channels in Britain later this year. The network, which
claims to go to 165,000 homes in Europe, of which 140,000
are in Britain alone, wants to be seen as a Eurocentric
channel rather than simply Britain-based as at present,
officials said. The network is widely watched across South
Asia and the Middle East.

The only way to resolve this issue is to become lika a North Korea.
Don't let anyone out, don't let anyone in. Restrict access to radios,
television, and newspapers. And the Internet? Well, India will have
to do without. Then, maybe then, will India have a modicum of a chance
to change the tide.

> MUMBAI: Music maestro Naushad Ali today lambasted film and

this is stupid. no one forces the youth to see the pop culture.
it is their choice. if anyone is to blame it is the youth themselves or
perhaps their parents who can make a difference in their children's
tastes but dont do so - and even then, why blame them too. why should
the youth take any interest in Hindustani Classical tradition if they
are not interested in it. just because "Music maestro Naushad Ali" says
so ?
even before cable TV or MTV culture became so prevelant in india, DD
used to (and perhaps does so even now) air these "<blah> kaa akhil
bhartiya karyakram" and even many other "indian tradition" programmes.
but they never evoked any interest in the general public. and the next
day MTV comes in and sweeps off the youth of a nation off its feet. so
it becomes the culprit ?! The television medium and the film business
are out to do business and not social service. and that i am sure is
not very different from the motive behind establishing "Naushad Academy
of Hindustani Sangeet".
What big awareness did he awake in the people of india when he was such
a prevelant figure in the film industry with regards to hindustani
classical music ?
in fact, if anyone is to blame for this "catastrophe" it is the
propenents of hindustani classical music themselves who were not able
to present this music to the indian populace in a manner which is
appealing and easy to embrace.
this is like vadilal saying that it is the fault of ice-cream shop

less and less shop keepers are now opening vadilal shops or stocking
vadilal ice-cream.

India is a democracy and will always be a democracy . It's very easy for
people like you sitting in America to say that India should be closed
to the world . What's wrong with watching Hollywood movies .
Even bad Hollywood movies are rejected in India .
As for Naushad , he is speaking nonsense . For the last so many
years ,i am listening to him lambasting everyone .
He started first saying that the music directors were dishing out
crappy music . He himself could not come up with a
good score himself ( I am taling of the ninetees )
He failed miserably . So he should better shut up .
Pancham forever
