Khamoshi The Musical
Review (Just an honest opinion) by Hemant Parikh 11th August ‘96’

Well when you go and see a film being prepared than the film is good. It
is not a commercial film, what I mean here is that it is not Hypocrite
type Rangeela or Historical Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The Box-office
fate will decide the outcome of Khamoshi. By far it is one of the best and
different Hindi Films ever made, it is a master piece. The only one thing
that came to my mind this morning was Kevin Costener’s film DANCES WITH
WOLVES.

Khamoshi is very unique in ways. It will fetch most of the Filmfare Awards
for sure. But my understanding is that the people who will not understand
the film will call it not good.
You have to be prepared for Emotions, Understanding and Silence. Every
scene in the film is very well thought of. Full credits to Sanjay Leela
Bhansali for his maiden venture. Cinematography by Anil Mehta has to be
seen, to be believed. The dance choreography is a big let down in some
songs, I don’t understand why Farah Khan(1942 - A Love Story) was not
taken by Sanjay. In some scenes Salman’s hair are not brushed but in the
next scene they are brushed. And strange thing is that Salman wears an
ear-ring in the right ear ( What does that prove?) and it is not worn in
every scene, it’s there in some scene and not in others.

For instance "Aankhon mein kya" has good dancing steps, but the let down
is "Aaj mein upar" where I thought there could have been and excellent
dance co-ordination. The Chart-busting song "Bahon ke darmiyan" was
silenced on screen , neither Salman or Manisha sang there was no dance
movements. In the song I felt as if they were trying to silence (KHAMOSHI)
Hariharan and Alka Yagnik’s voices. The music when you hear at home or in
the car sounds very different in the film. For instance Majrooh
Sultanpuri’s thought about the word KHUDA in two songs relates to the
film in a different manner. I mean Manisha is Christian by cast and Salman
as Hindu. Kavita Krishnamurthy signs like the real sun in the films music.

There are only Eight main characters in the film. Two of them are
children. The whole film has been shot in Goa. So we don’t miss our
beloved Mumbai, Sychells and Switzerland. The characters are very well
portrayed…. I won’t say more. But I feel sorry for Salman Khan, because he
will not get much credit for his contribution. Just like other films
ANOTHER LAMB TO SLAUGHTER OR SHALL WE SAY SALMAN KHAN. It was good to know
Helen was in the film, but just like we knew Shah Rukh Khan was in ARMY
for how long??? I paid $10.00 to see the film, I was prepared for a
different film, It can only be seen once.

When the time comes for the recognition of the film, it will be most
talked about. When the time comes for awards, I hope not again people give
importance to MR. A. R. Rahman and over listen to Jatin Lalit’s Melody.
When the time comes for the Best supporting actor they look at Salman
Khan.

You will learn sign language, you will learn what deaf & dumb people go
through. But does the average Indian Cinema Lover like this it is a big
question?. The same egeristic people have already started to talk about
Dubbed-film HINDUSTANI. Far as I am concerned Khamoshi is classic
Hindustani film. What had happened to Raj Kapoor’s magnum-opus MERA NAAM
JOKER I hope that does not happen to Khamoshi. Because Raj Kapoors
understanding( story) was real in the film, but the public did not
understand the film. However the most talked about and un-doubtly the best
actor Nana Patekar will save the film with Manisha Koirala. People might
call Khamoshi and Art-film, I do too. But what does that mean at
box-office?. Have you read he reviews about IS RAAT KI SUBAH NAHIN?. The
Indian Cinemalovers will have to love Khamoshi so much that it will break
the box-office silence.

Here is my prediction for the Awards

Best Film: Khamoshi
Best Actor: Nana Patekar
Best Actress: Manisha Koirala
Best Supporting Actor: Salman Khan
Best Supporting Actress: Seeman Biswas
Best Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Best Cinematographer: Anil Mehta
Best Music Director: Jatin Lalit
Best Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Best Playback Female Singer: Kavita Krishnamurthy
Best Playback Male Singer: Udit Narayan

Here is 11 predicted awards so wait and see next year if this film beats
Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenege. I know we are not comparing apples with
apple. But apple does taste nice.
So let’s see and hear what you have to say about Khamoshi the Musical.
