Here I am sharing part of the joy with you, in the form of lyrics,
of my favorite song in the soundtrack. This song is sung by the
six apsaras who discover the six babies that join to become
the six-faced god, Shanmuga. I can safely vouch that there are
six distinct female singers including P.Susheela and the 2 Sulamangalam
sisters, but cannot recognize the others. I would appreciate this
information and any information about the Music Director of the film.

Kandan Karunai was directed by A.P.Nagarajan. Music was by K.V.Mahadevan
and Lyrics by Kannadasan. Thanks for reminding me of Kandan Karunai. It
also contains one of my favourite Tamil songs, "Solla Solla Inikudhada".
Excellently sung by P.Susheela. Difficult to watch it though. The great
actress, Savitri, sings this song. By this time she had bloated almost
beyond recognition. I dont have info on the singers of the song mentioned
by you.
K.V.Mahadevan was the music director for lot of A.P.Nagarajan's films.
Most of these films were mythologies. Mahadevan gave some excellent songs
for A.P.Nagarajan. Some that come to mind are :
The lovely Kalyani in "Mannavan Vandhanadi" (Tiruvarutselvar, P.Susheela)
The definitive Gowri Manohari in "Paatum Naane" (Tiruvilayadal, TMS)
Punnagavarali in "Nadarmudi Mel Irukkum Nalla Paambe" (Tiruvarutselvar, TMS)
Kambhoji in "Kalviya, Selvama" (Saraswati Sabhadam, TMS)
The unforgettable Balamurali ragamalika "Oru Naal pothuma" (Tiruvilayadal, BMK)
Most of the lyrics were by Kannadasan.
I think Kandan Karunai also has a good song by K B Sundarambal. K V Mahadevan
also tuned the song "Tiruparam Kinranthil Nee Sirithal" sung by P.Susheela
and Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi. There was a tape released by HMV called 'Bhakti
Kondaduvom'. This hs some excellent stuff by Susheela on the A side. One of my
prized possession. The music of KVM, Vishwanathan Ramamurthy and the lyrics of
Kannadasan have always been a source of great enjoyment.
I have one question here for someone who knows about Kannada movies. Yesterday I
was watched a picture for a brief while. It had Rajkumar playing Kannappa. It was
a old film. Kannappa sings a song standing in front of the Siva Linga. It was a
song which has also appeared in Telugu. The words in Telugu went something like
"Mahesha Paapa Vinasha, Kailasa Vaasa Eesa".It is an excellent song. I was told
that the Kannada song was sung by a Tamil singer. Is it true? Does anyone know
the song I am referring to and who has sung it?
Thanks in advance.
With Warm Regards,
S.Suresh
The film is 'bEDara kaNNappa', the first major hit in Kannada (1953),
which launched many careers in the Kannada film industry, including
that of the hero, Rajkumar. The film has been made in Hindi also,
as 'Shibabhakta', with Sahu Modak in the lead role.
Going by the meter of the Telugu words you have given, the Kannada
song is perhaps:
. shivappaa kaayo tande, mooru lOka swaami dEva
hasiweyannu taaLalaare, kaapaaDeyaa
haranE, shivapaa ....
The lyrics by Nanjappa are very appealingly colloquial, as befits
the role: a hunter. The music was by R. Sudarshanam, who was
already an established figure in Tamil music and also delighted
the Hindi audience through his colloboration with Dhaniram and
C. Ramchandra in AVM's 'Ladki'.
The singer was C.S. Jayaraman. I don't know anything about him.
Was a he a well-known playback singer in Tamil in the early 50s?

Thanks for the info. (I am trying to learn Kannada now. What is the
meaning of the word 'beDara' ?)

Yes. This is indeed the song. I remember the words 'shivappaa' in the
beginning of the song. The word 'devA' is used in the place of 'haraNe'
in the Telugu song. Excellent way in which this word is used to come back
to the pallavi of the song.

I guess the Telugu song would also have R.Sudarshanam as the music
director. Unfortunately I dont know the lyricist and I have forgotten
which film this belonged to in Telugu. (Maybe 'baktha kaNNappa' ?).
There was one more 'baktha kaNNappa' made later. This had Krishnam Raju
in the lead role. Music by Adinarayan Rao and Satyam. Lyrics -
Veturi Sundara Rammurthy(?). This also had some good songs sung mainly by
Ramakrishna, who was a Ghantasala clone.

When my uncle told me that this song was sung by a Tamilian singer,
I guessed it should be C.S.Jayaraman. (Unfortunately the audio quality
was poor so I wasnt very sure). C.S.Jayaraman was quite famous in Tamil
in those days. He had a very distinctive voice. A couple of his popular
numbers are :
'vazhkaye alai pOle' (film ?)
'vArAi' from 'Mandhiri Kumari'. This particular song is supposed to have
been a super-duper hit in those days. It is popular even today and C.S.
is known by this song to youngsters of today. IIRC, he is related to the
present C.M. of TamilNadu, Mr.Karunanidhi.

No varai was by trichy logonathan. It is
one of his popular numbers and IMO, he
was very versatile singer in 50's, who had
lot of popular songs in that period.
C.S Jayaraman was the astana singer for
sivaji's early films, until TMS established
himself from saranagatara ( nendiu nendiu
nenjam uragunadhte, the popular number).
One of C.S. jayaraman's popular numbers
is - vinoodum mugilodum.

Yes, he is. Karunaidhi married padmavathy, siter of C.S. Jayaraman and she was
his
first wife, AFIR.

Actually, there are only 2 singers:-) Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi & Renuka - never heard
of her by the way.
>aarumugam aana poRuL vaanmagizha vandhaan

This alludes to how he was created - the Gods worship Shiva whose head multiplies into 6.
The third eye on each face emits a fiery substance (poRuL) that Vayu carries to the
Ganga who in turn takes it to the Saravana Poigai.

kOlamugam = beautiful face. kaalamagaL is the fullness of time here carried to the
logical conclusion that the fullness gives birth. There are also other
mythic/metaphysical allusions here.
The film also had the song thirupparamkundrathil nee sirithaal - this was written
by Poovai Senguttuvan and set to music by Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan. To the list
of films attached in another response on this thread I'd add Deivam which had
megahits like "marudhamalai maamaniyE murugaiyyaa," "thiruchendoorin
kadalOrathil senthil nathan arasaangam" etc.
