"Asha Bhosle was the best person I ever met."

Destiny unites and destiny parts, this is music director O P
Nayyar's firm belief. Perhaps it was this destiny that made him team
up with Asha Bhosle in 1952. Starting with Naya Daur, they weaved
magic together for two decades. They parted ways but their music still
endures.

Today, while Asha Bhosle still creates waves with her R D Burman
remixes, O P Nayyar has stopped composing and lives a life of a
wanderer. But he still generates interest whenever he makes a rare
public appearance. The man who set his own trends and lived by his own
rules, continues to do so, looking as grand as ever. Smart, top hat,
intact.

Looking back, who played the most important role in your life?

Having been through the spring and autumn of my life, now that I am
seventy-six, I can say that the most important person in my life was
Asha Bhosle. She was the best person I ever met.

When did you first meet Asha?

I first met her in 1952 while composing music for Chham Chhama Chham.
I thought she sang very well and I told her that. In a few years, she
became very popular. And since 1959, she was emotionally and
professionally involved with me. We split on August 5, 1972. It's
almost been three decades since Asha left that beautiful scar on me.

Describe Asha as a person and as a singer.

As a woman, she was superb. She was very good to me. Also she was a
great mother to her children. As a person, she was very bhola, so
innocent and so straightforward. Of course with experience she became
shrewd and clever in dealing with the world, and I don't blame her for
that. As a singer, she understood the feelings, emotions and sadness
in my music and she gave to me what I wanted. After Shamshad Begum and
Geeta Dutt, hers was the only voice that did justice to my music. She
sang all my songs with her heart and soul.

Then why did a wonderful team like yours split?

I know astrology very well. I knew that one day I had to part with
her. Something also happened, that upset me, so I left her. After that
she made a fabulous team with RD Burman.

What do you think of Asha's contribution in his music?

R D Burman gave his best compositions to Lata Mangeshkar. The rest he
gave to Asha. This is a fact. Films like Amar Prem and Kati Patang
prove what I'm saying.

Did you have any favourites amongst male singers?

I loved Mohammed Rafi. His death was a big loss to me. When I composed
for Shammi Kapoor or Johnny Walker, he managed to sound like them. He
sang so many wonderful songs for me. Rafi miyan was a wonderful
person. Nobody can ever be compared to him.

Who were the lyricists that you valued most?

I've appreciated Sahir Ludhianvi, S H Bihari, Majrooh Sultanpuri,
Qamar Jalalabadi, Noor Devasi, Shevan Rizvi and Aziz Kashmiri.

How do you react to today's remixes of old music? Does it anger you?

Hardly. In fact some of today's youngsters are doing great service to
the oldies. I liked what Venus did in their Bollywood vs Hollywood
album, which fused Rap music with my music.

What according to you is your contribution to Hindi film music?

My contribution is nothing but the power of God. I had no background
in music, and I came from a family of doctors and lawyers who
considered films as a profession of kanjars.

You've always been an arrogant man, living life on your own terms.
Are you proud of this trait?

I have been proud of one thing for sure and that is that I have never
prostituted my profession. That's the only thing I've been honest
about in my life.

Do you have any regrets?

Yes, I have regrets. I haven't accomplished certain things in my life
and even now there are some intense desires left.

In your personal life, you've forsaken your house and all other
material possessions. Don't you ever miss them?

Never. Once I put my faith in God, what's there to fear? At the fag
end of my life, what will I have left if I lose my soul in the
process? I am grateful to my family that they have helped me to cut
my karmas in this life and not take those karmas with me to my next
life.

How do you spend your life today?

I am a homeopath. It is said that the Gandharvas were connected with
three things-music, medicine and astrology. God gifted me with all
three. So I feel that I am like the king of the Gandharvas. All that
happened in my life had to happen. My basic philosophy in life is that
when you cheat, betray or are dishonest, it comes back to you. I guess
that I wasn't very careful about what I did in my personal life, I had
all the three follies. So, I paid the price in my
personal life.

This sounds like an article published earlier in some magazine - Filmfare or
Screen, or whatever. Even if not, it would be appreciated if the source of the
article is made known and when and where it was published.

Happy listenings.

Satishji, you are wasting your breath(and bandwidth:)).

Everyone has been asking this fellow to give credits where due, but
does he care. No. He picks up articles from our own rmim page(that
Satish has) and reposts those articles.

Of course these articles have been posted here before and we have read them.

From "these articles have been posted here before"
it doesn't follow that anyone has read them. Moreover,
in the case of certain posters--who shall remain unnamed--
it doesn't even follow that the person doing the posting
has read the article!

Mr. Ashok/Neha and others,
I don't need to copy/steal articles from other sources. Thanks, I have
been collecting articles for the past 25 years. Also, I have one the
biggest and rarest music collection - which goes back to 1931!!!! If
you have time, please visit other sites: rafi, Lata, Kishore and
Asha.. you will see my name on the contribution list. Another thing, I
have tons of rare pics of singers! I have live interview of Rafi! How
is that? Do any one claim they have in their collection. The reason
for not commenting: Too many BIG mouth idiots who has nothing to do
except critizing. Indian people has not learned yet how to appriciate
others effort. If you guys have already read it, then just don't open
it!!! that's it!!! Was that too Hard!!!

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting something that has
already been posted before. Some people here take pride in undermining
the poster's enthusisam, if the information has already been discussed.
If you know about it, keep it to yourself. There are a lot of people
who has seen such posts for the first time!

But it's the poster's etiquette (or netiquette) to disclose the source
of the post, if it isn't original.

That is no requirement for being a music fan. There are millions of
Rafi/Asha/Lata/Kishore/Mukesh/Hemant/Manna Dey/Saigal and umpteen others' fans
who may not have seen even their photos. Does that make them any less of a
music enthusiast!

The reason

Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder.

Indian people has not learned yet how to appriciate

>it!!! that's it!!! Was that too Hard!!!

Also, the "Indian people has" not yet learned how to take positive criticism."
Also, the "Indian people is" in the habit of using more than one exclamation
marks. And how can one make out if an article has already been posted without
opening and reading it. Elemenatry, my dear Watson!

If an avid collector of articles wishes to post vintage articles on this
newsgroup and let others share that wealth, most welcome. All that is being
asked for is simply to attribute the source of the article with the posting.
That would help immensely in determining if the article has already been read.

Hmmmmmmmm......... you have been collecting articles for 25 years! Assuming
you were at least a teenager when you started it, you must be around 40
years by now. But everything you have said and done (which includes your
English language proficiency) so far belies your age. You come across as an
immature belligerent teenager who is either stupid enough not to get a
simple message or just stubborn enough not to follow it. Whether it is
gentle proddings by Satishji or funny parodies by Nani, it just doesn't seem
to work.

I don't buy your age though. We have had imposters before claiming to be
school kids. This is probably a case in the reverse.

English too! I have seen Rafi, lata, kishore, asha and others in live
concerts... More than once!!! I don't have sources: Some of the
articles have been published long time before the internet! I think
you were born in the new age! That'swhy you have no understanding of
other media! Can you read Urdu - Arun? I have numerous
articles on Artists published in SHAMA. DO YOU WANT ME TO FORWARD THE
SCAN COPIES OF THE DEATH COVERAGE OF RAFI AND OTHERS! If you guys
already know the source: then why the hell are you requesting from ME?
If you search for this article - It could be probably ME who
originally posted! Have you ever though of that - GENIUS? I think
there are lots of hot headed boys/girls who wants others to prove!
First of all, i can take a positive criticism, but not bad words some
have used in my previous posting!

I get quite a few emails (that are not intended for me) from muslims and I
make it a point to let them know that they have reached the wrong person. I
guess the reason for that is that "asam" is a common muslim name. Now you
send me your photograph with a "Picture of ME! Sajjad qadir" subject line
and nothing else in the body of the mail and I am somehow supposed to figure
out that Sajjad Qadir is after all sajjadmq, and he is sending his
photograph to prove his age!

It is surprising to see Satishji quoting entire 111 line artical in his
reply, and then Abhayji quoting entire 126 line mail of
sajjadji+satishji in his reply.

Total wasted lines: 111+126+137 + (20 in my mail) = 394 lines

Assalaam Alaikum, Sajjad, You are really truly the best person I ever

Thank you very much for posting the articles in this newsgroup.
I do really enjoy reading them and I am sure a very lot of people love
it with me. Don't get irritated by those cockroaches who have never
ever achieved something in their miserable lives. Don't give them a
chance to irritate you, I think the best thing to do is just to ignore
them. The sincere people know who you are: One could not find a better
friend in life.

Let's talk about the good things in life: The best singer of all
times, The Melody King, Mohamed Rafi Sahib, the man with the diamant
voice,.............

I've got songs of Rafi Sahib singing in the Dutch, English, Spanish,
Portugese and Sranan Tongo language.

Here are some of the Sranan words:
