I am searching for a brief translation of this Gujarati poem, rendered
wonderfully by Lata. What does rajkaN mean? My wild guess is that it's
something like a speck of dust or a dewdrop, and the song is perhaps
about an insignificant creature aspiring to become something great.
Could someone provide me a brief description of the central idea of
the poem? Thanks in advance.

exactly. rough translation of the mukhaDaa:

ek rajakaN suuraj thavaane shamaNe ugamaNe ja_ii uDe

>> a dust particle, with a dream to become the sun, flies off to the East

palak maa.n DhaLii paDe aathamaNe

>> but falls back to the West in a trice

glossary:
rajakaN - speck of dust
shamaNuu - dream
ugamaNe - East-wards
aathamaNe - West-wards

Don't remember the rest of the words.

one speck of dust dreaming to a sun flies towards sky (east) and falls
down on the earth (west)
it gazes at water with thirsty eyes and desires to form a cloud
it also desires to become a beam and merge into ocean
unfortunately it starts drifting in to whirlpool and gets confused
with un unknown embarrasment

it asked for light from Jwal and demanded fire from volcano
speed it requested from cyclone and beauty from sky
amazed its downfall everybody look at it rolling under their feet
Translation is mine and not very good I know!.

It is said Poet of the song Harindra Dave was aspiring to be professor
and did not get proper grades so in desperation he wrotre this poem.
He went on to become a leading poet & story writer of Gujrati
literature. He edited Janmbhumi a leading Gujarati News paper.

Shri Dilikumar Dholakai composed this song.He was asstt.music
director of L & P.Some of the very good songs of this duo are said to
be composed by him. song sung by him "Ankhno AfiNi" is very popular.
He requested Lata Mangeshkar to sing this song.Latabai out of repect
for his musical abilities accepted but told him that she has no time
for rehearsals. So at each meeting he should sing this song and she
will listen. This happened about ten times on the day of recording
Latyaji told him"Dilipji aapne ye gaananaa mujhe das baar sunatya aur
harek vakht apane alag alag tan, harkat aur murkiya li ab aaj me
usamese jo sabse jyada pasand ayi vo gavungi"

Wow, that translation is neat and the story to go with it even more
interesting. BTW, I think you wanted to mention the music director's
name as Dilip Dholakia.

It is one beautiful song!
