The 'teasing' or the 'cheD-chaD' songs have always been favorite
of mine. RDB gave us some lovely numbers in this category. As
you will probably notice, all the songs I am listing down
here are from the same 'era', i.e early seventies. And
furthurmore all songs feature the Kishore Kumar-Lata combination.
RDB never gave us beautiful numbers in this category later in
the seventies, and the 80's. OK, there might be some, but they
were never the same.

1. KK : Maine dekha ek sapna
Lata : Haay, kya dekha, bolo na bolo na
KK : Kabse dhadke dil kitna
Lata : Haay, haay kitna bolo na bolo na (pause) BOLO na!
KK : Dekha baadlon sa ek naujawan teri raahon mein hai
aur tu paaglon ki tarah uski baahon mein hai.

(SAMADHI, Majrooh)

This is one of those typical 'cheD-chaD' game , where the
'winner' keeps switching back and forth, and finally both
of them are winners. RDB's tune makes it very much enjoyable.

2. KK : Kaali palak teri gori, khulne lagi hai thoDi thoDi
ek chorni ek chor ke ghar karne, chali hai chori
O chori
Lata : Kaali palak piya mori, khulne lagi ...

(DO CHOR, Majrooh)

An excellent number, especially the music in the prelude
and the interludes.

3. KK : Suno
Lata : haan, Kaho
KK : Kaha
Lata : Arre , Suna
KK : Kuchh hua kya?
Lata : Abhi to nahin, kucch bhi nahin
KK : Chali
Lata : hawa
KK : jhuki
Lata : ghata
KK : Kuchh hua kya?
Lata : Abhi to nahin, kucch bhi nahin

(AAP KI KASAM, Anand Bakshi)

4. KK : Diwaana karke choDoge, lagta hai yoon humko
Sau baar kaha hai jaane-jahan yun pyar se tum dekha na karo
Lata : Haay, jeena mushkil kar doge, lagta hai yun humko
Sau baar....

(MERE JEEVAN SAATHI, Majrooh)

Wow!! what a number. Orchestra done by RDB here is just out
of the world. The beats, the music..excellent. A very 'flowy'
number. Wonder why it is the least popular among MERE JEEVAN
SAATHI songs.

5. Lata : Koi Ladka mujhe kal raat sapne mein mila
badi pyaari si soorat thi, bhala sa naam tha
lala la la lala lalala la lala
KK : Koi ladki mujhe kal raat....

(SEETA AUR GEETA, Majrooh)

Lyrically, this number is the cousin of the SAMADHI song(#1).

6. Lata : Maine kaha zid choD de, duppata choD de, O sanam
KK : Maine kaha zid choD de, tu dil mod de, O sanam
Yayya ya yayya yaaa

(RICKSHAWALA, Majrooh)

This song happens to be my current favorite. Very enjoyable
to say the least.

RDB was by no means the best in this category, SDB was really
his 'baap' when it came to CheD-chaD songs. A very special
mention should also go to OPN, who had tons of lovely songs
in this category. Are we missing somebody?

Yes, sure. The REAL credit should go to the man behind the scenes,
and he is Majrooh Sultanpuri. (whether its SDB, OPN or RDB).
Hats off to Majrooh for these wonderful songs.

Cheers

Oh yes, these ched-ched songs create a great scene on the screen
and everyone enjoys a lot. RDB is good in all situations.
Let me add the following ched-ched songs.

These ched ched songs can come when

1) when heroine is arrogant and hero tries to rag her in a college.
song in Dil ladki hai yaa... kambhi jaisi khadi hai... types.

2) The Heroine pretends that she does'nt like a guy and teases him

3) Heroine is angry and refuses to talk to the guy.

With these in mind I sang the following numbers to myself.

1) yeh Ladkaa haaye allah kaisa hai deewana (HKKN)

Great Music, Great Tune, Great Picturisation, Great Lyrics.
Yeh gaane ki 'khass' baat yeh hai ki it is one of those
mazedaar situations where the lady teases the lover saying that
there can not be love so soon, love can not happen instantly,
it should be well thought etc etc.. despite the fact that she
already made up her mind positively on the guy.

Hum ne to itnaa seekha Humne tho Itnaa Jaana
Dil Kaa soudaa hota hai souda zindaagi ka
milte hi kaise koi hotsa hai deewaaana
kitna mushkil hai toubaa isko samjhaana

The other speciality is, it is lady who is teasing the guy.

2)
Koi haseena jab rooth jaati hai tho hai to
ek do teen ho jaati hai

In Sholay I love this song more than Mahbooba Mahbooba.

Dharmender and Hemaa made this song real Romantic.

3) Soni Mere soni meri tamanna jhoot nahin hai mera pyaar
deewaana se ho gayi galti jaane do yaar (Yaadon ki Baarat)

4) DDLJ song
ruk jaa oh jaane waali

5) Leke pahla Pahla pyaar Bhar ke ankho me umaar
CID

6) Bol Raadha Bol sanagm hogaa ke nahin

7) That song in Dil Hai Ki Mannta Nahin, Raghu Jaitley puts some
photograph in wallet and starts singing teasing Puja Bhatt.

There should be numerous numbers of Shammi, Rajesh Khanna..

damn, I have to work..

Let me tell you what Arun, why dont you postpone starting lovely threads
like this for another two weeks. I am full upto neck in work.
If you put a good post I can not refrain myself from posting
to Rmim. :-))

This is probably the best song from Sholay, IMO!

This is a nice song too! ... It should be ...
...meri soni meri tamanna ...

I am in love with this beautiful Rafi song from 'Abdullah' ... again an RDB magic
...

... Maine poocha chand se ke dekha hai kahin

While there are a number of Kishore-Lata songs composed by R.D. Burman in the
teasing category, in my opinion, it was Kishore and Asha who hit it off
beautifully in this relationship. (And not just with R.D.Burman's music.)

Other than the omnipresent, yet thoroughly enjoyable "Ahhhh, chhod do aanchal
zamana kya kahega" from "Paying Guest" with S.D.Burman and "Haal kaisa hai
janaab ka" from "Chalti ka naam gaadi" again by S.D. Burman, I can tell you
of a couple more not-so-mainstream ones I am extremely fond of.

One is from "Jaalsaaz", music by N.Dutta - "Arararararara tod na dil beqaraar
ka, maan bhi jaao chhodo yeh dillagi". Kishore and Asha are thoroughly in
their playful element in this song.
Another is from an offbeat movie called "Manoranjan" starring Sanjeev Kumar
and Zeenat Aman, music by R.D. Burman - "Aaya hoon main tujhko le jaaoonga
apne saath tere haath thaamke".

And what about the popular "Bhali bhali si ek soorat bhala sa ek naam" from
"Budhdha mil gaya". Asha is spectacularly playful in this song. Lata would
not have been able to carry off the playfulness half as well as Asha does, in
my opinion.

And I have an uneasy feeling, I am missing many many more ........

Harish, you came up with some great songs. But I wanted to add two songs
to the category lady trying to make up with a guy and lady trying to
tease a guy, and I love both of the songs.
A. From Teesri Manzil--- O mere sona re, sona re, sona re....

B. From Sangam -- Mein Kaa karu ram mujhe buddha mil gaya.....

Thoroughly agree with Vandana. And before I forget, let me mention
another golden pair : Rafi with Asha. They have countless Chhed-Chhad
songs, particularly with SDB and OPN.

A couple of my favorites :

'Dekho kasam se, kasam se, kehte hain tumse haan' (TUMSA NAHIN DEKHA)
'O aaja pancchi akela hai' ( 9 2 11)

I really liked the choice of Vandana but as far as I know,
I have'nt listened to the song from Jaalsaaz. IMO Kishore
too is really great in Bhali Bhali se ek soorat and the song
is one of my favorites.

Some other good songs in this category are

1) Ganga kinare ek bamblo gau ko ri jayi (KK + Lata) Movie: Sabse Bada
Rupaiya

KK & Lata are really playful in this song and it was a very popular song
of its time. Picturised on Vinod Mehra and Farida Jalal, this song was
one the saving grace of this lame movie.

2) Ham aap ki aankhon main is dil ko (Rafi + Geeta)

This is sophisticated playful song and esp. the lyrics are superb.
Sahir has done a real great job.
Look at the lines
Rafi: Ham aap ko khwaboon main la la ke satayenge
Geeta: Ham aapki aankhon se neende hi ura le to

Rafi has changed his voice really nicely to suit Guru Dutt. There are
many Rafi+Geeta duets which are tease or borderline tease :-) like
"Ankhon hi Ankhon main ishara ho gaya" songs.

Hemant and Lata/Asha had a very nice duet in this category which I fail
to remember.
Let me take a partisan shot :-). IMO Kishore practically ruled this
category. His playful personality reflected in these songs. One other
song which may qualify and is one of my favorites is
"Tum ko bhi to hota hoga o sajni" from movie "Aap aaye Bahaar aayi".
Kishore and Lata have made this rather ordinary song great song to
listen and fast music by LP helped in that feat. Another great song
is "Paanch rupaiah barah aana" song from Chalti ka Naam Gaadi.

Some solo(or almost solo) teasing songs

1) Baahon main chale aao (Anamika)
2) Raafta Raafta dekho aankh meri ladi hai (Some KKK movie)
3) Roothe roothe piya (Kora Kagaz)
4) Gham ka fasana ban gaya sachha & O manchali (Manchali)
5) O meri sharmilee (Sharmilee)
6) Dil Haaye mera dil
(the above song starts with kind of teasing overtones but later on
does'nt feel like a real teasing song. Any idea about picturisation!)

Cheers

Indeed, Kishore's playful (euphemism for "eccentric", I s'pose) personality
does show through in such songs, esp. when the song is picturized on himself.

When Kishore and Asha sing, one can feel them letting go and having wholesome
fun. There are very few songs in which I feel Lata doing the same. One of
them oddly is, no, not "Jai jai shiv shankar" or "Chadti jawaani meri chaal
mastaani", but "Bhai battoor, bhai battoor ab jaayenge kitni door" from
"Padosan" (R.D.Burman). Wonder if anyone else feels the same about Lata in
this song.
[ Ofcourse, the trick to letting go and having fun is not having to worry
about being in tune. Which is probably why very few of the present day
singers can convey the same "masti", they have to concentrate too hard being
in tune. :) For a somewhat similar reason, S.P. Balasubramaniam is not the
same in Hindi songs - he has to concentrate too hard on his pronunciation to
have fun singing. Some of his Tamil songs are just oodles of fun. ]

After raving so much about the "Jaalsaaz" song, it is only fair that I post
the lyrics. Kishore and Asha share a delightful rapport in this song, marked
by harmony, conformity, accord, and affinity. (Just like Webster defines
"rapport"! :)

I am with you. Also, the only song where I feel Lata came close
to 'sizzling' voice of Asha, is 'Baahon mein chale aao, humse sanam
kya Pardaa' from Anamika.

Again R.D.Burman.

A nice topic for discussion. I am a new entrant to RMIM and this is a
really nice newsgroup. Just love the discussion.

I agree that KK-Asha formed a perfect duets with films like Chalti Ka
Naam Gaadi, Baap Re Baap, Jawaani Deewani, Jhumroo, Khel khel mein,
........

Though it also reminds me of one KK-Lata song of this category
Achi nahi sanam dillagi. Forgot the Movie. Any ideas??

Aha!! It's NOT Lata, it is Asha Bhonsle yet again. Got this song recorded
just a couple of weeks back from a friend, and hence know it is present in
the Kishore-Asha Duets HMV Golden Collection.

The movie is "Raakhi aur HathkaDi", music by R.D. Burman, and the lyrics are
quite cute (don't know by who):
Kishore: Achchi nahin sanam dillagi dil-e-beqaraar se
Asha: Kyon ro rahe ho, chheda tha humne tumko toh pyaar se
Kishore: Khel hi khel mein jaayegi ek jaan...
Asha: Kyon ro rahe ho, chheda tha humne tumko toh pyaar se

Nice thread, Vandana. As you rightly point out, Lata rarely seems to
let go. However, when she lets "her hair down," so to speak, she is awesome.
Examples are "machalti aarzo khaDi baahein pasaare, o mere saajna re..," "raatoN
ke saaye ghane," or more currently, "sona lei jaa re, chaandi lei jaa re,
ye dil kaise de dooN jogi ke baDi badnaami hogi." Esp. in the last one,
which is a very Asha-ish song to begin with, she packs great enthusiasm/fun
in the way she says the words, which is less common for her. In short, she actually
emotes - and terrifically.

She also sounds like she is having fun in the Chalte-chalte song with
Shailendra Singh - I am sure you know the one I mean, because my mind
has totally and suddenly blanked out :-)

Hi,

I'm trying to recollect the lyrics for the rest of this 'cute' song ...

...does the antara go like this?? ...

... 'chedun karun na shiqwaa karo na chedu..un tho gila
are lagta hai jaise thum aaj se diwane hue piyaa..aa
karte ho thum sharat jab milte ho pyaaa..r se..e'

... I think I've mixed up Asha & Kishore's antaras ... and the
lyrics, I suspect, have been 'fabricated' :-) a bit by me ...

... maybe someone could correct it!!

regards,

Anand

Sorry, I should havbe followed my instincts. Actually whenever I hear
the song I think of Asha but only recently at one of KK's sites on the
Web, I found it to be listed under KK-Lata duets.

Here are the complete lyrics to this "cute" song. As a friend pointed out, the
tune of this song is not exceptional, it is one of those songs where the
singers make the song stand out. Kishore sounds convincingly "pouty" and Asha,
as usual, does a great job of "manaaoing", just like in "Achcha ji main haari
chalo maan jaao na" with Rafi.

It's a very nice song, albeit being picturised on Vijay Arora and
Asha Parekh. It's Asha and not Lata.
