The opening credits of "Paakezah" are accompanied by a tarana sung
very well by Lata Mangeshkar.

in Tansen. I wonder if the singer is Khemchand himself
- there is a whole tarana "tum tanaa dir daanii dere" in RDB's Kinara
- I vaguely recall a piece in Rani Rupmati. The scene-on-screen was a
sort of competition between a singer and dancer. Voice was Manna
Dey's. It was not a full-fledged song and probably never made it to
the audio media.

Are you thinking of the "Sangeet Samraat Tansen" piece that begins
"Kraan Ta Dha, Kraan Ta Dha, Kraan Ta Dha"?

Nice! Here it's actually Bhairavi taraana, preceded by a snippet of
"Lagat Karejwa Men Chot" - don't know the voice, but onscreen it's
sung by the character Ghaseet Khan, just before he's censored by the
local police because Miyaan Tansen is busy creating a new raag and
cannot be disturbed!

The scene-on-the-screen is exactly correct. I don't recall the lagat
karejawaa part, or that it was a Bhairavi tarana. I only recall the
"words" being similar to the tarana in madhuban me.n raadhikaa.

AFAIR, it is a Bhairavi piece and filmed on the late comedian
Radhakishan. Like the taans in the Kohinoor song (filmed on
Muqri), another instance of classical notes being trivialized
for the sake of comedy. Just my opinion.

I haven't heard the piece of music, but a stronger candidate for the
voice (than Khemchand Prakash) is Rewa Shankar Marwari. Marwari was
one of Ranjit Studio's composers in 1930s, and a recurring presence as
actor and singer in 1940s in films by people associated with Ranjit.
In particular, he seems to have enjoyed good relations with Jayant
Desai, who had left Ranjit to start his own production company.
Rewashankar Marwari had sung a beautiful composition in Raag Shree
(jay jay shankar gangaadhar) for composer Jnan Dutt in Ranjit
Movietone's film Shankar Parvati in 1943. The 1940s film was named
just Tansen (not Sangeet Samrat Tansen as stated by Sanjeev). In fact
it was released the same year as Shankar Parvati, making RSM a highly
probable candidate to have sung the trivat in Tansen.

well known as Manna Dey, how did Khemchand Prakash come to be
mentioned as a possible singer? Geet Kosh does not mention the trivat
in Tansen (1943), but I assumed that it might be a short piece, not a
full song, and hence left out in HFGK. Sorry for contributing to the
confusion.

I was talking about 2 separate songs. The one from Tansen is a trivat.
It is indeed a short piece and is sung in a sort of a comic
representation. It is sung by the character who is Tansen's
predecessor at Akbar's court and hence his staunchest detractor. He
sings the trivat for the benefit of Akbar's ailing daughter. She gets
disgusted by the "music" and later wills Akbar to get Tansen to sing
Deepak.
So, who plays the above character? Apart from the trivat, he also sang
a dhrupad-like composition "shahenshah akbar". Tansen interrupts this
to point out that the pakhavaj player has a false thumb and that the
singer is not singing the Shukla Bilawal correctly. Presumably the
actor who plays the singer is also the singer of both the pieces. Is
it Rewa Shankar Marwari?

There is no common name in the cast of Shahenshah Akbar and Tansen
(both 1943) in HFGK pages. But Krishnarao Chonkar had acted in
Shahenshah Akbar. Was the dhrupad-like composition filmed on Chonkar?
(The name is choNakar or चोणकर; not चोंकर as written in HFGK.) Was it
sung by him? Now there are two candidates for the voice: Krishnarao
Chonkar and my instinctive guess about Rewa Shankar Marwari. Can
anybody (Professor Saheb?) recognize their faces or their voice? Many
rmim-ers must have heard their voice but I don't have access to their
singing right now.

The same actor and the same singer for both the pieces. I don't think
it is Krishnarao Chonkar. I have the pieces on audio tape somewhere. I
will fish them out, digitize and share.
