Hello all,

Would anybody be able to make suggestions about Indian music that is based
on train journeys or train rhythms (taal?)?

Any help with names or words I could search on or even composers would help
too. I am thinking on the lines of instrumentals please. I am new to Indian
music and very much entranced by it.

Thank you very much..

The best of this sub-category are following two songs:

Film: WARIS (50s) / Music: Anil Biswas

Song: Rahi Matwale Tu Chhed Ik Baar / Talat + Suraiya

(the fast version) . The song has two additional slow
versions.

Film: RAILWAY PLATFORM (50s) / Music: Madan Mohan

Song: Basti Basti Parbat Parbat Gata aye Banjara / Rafi

(part 1 only of the 2 part song)

Another song which I like marginally is:

Film: DOST (70s) / Music: Laxmikant Pyarelal

Song: Gaadi Bula Rahi Hai / Kishore Kumar

(there are two more slow versions of this song,
with different titles:

Aate Hain Log, Jaate Hain Log and

Gaadi Ka Naam Na Kar Badnaam)

If your decide to step down from the technology ladder and
decide to travel on the horse (with or without the carriage),
then we have ton load of songs. Some people call them as

Ghoda Gaadi songs

Any interest in traveling by rocket ?

The song 'Hum dono do premi duniya chhod chale' by Kishore Kumar and
Lata Mangeshkar in Ajanabee (1974) has a brilliant use of the train
engine whistle. This song was composed by R.D. Burman and filmed on
the train.

Another one that comes to mind is 'Badal jaaye agar maali' (Bahaaren
Phir Bhi Aayengi, 1966) also filmed on a train. Music: O.P. Nayyar,
Singer: Mahendra Kapoor

Another is 'Rukh se zara naqaab utha do mere huzoor' (Mere Huzoor,
1968) also filmed on a train. Music: Shankar Jaikishan, Singer:
Mohammed Rafi

One of the best(IMHO) is

Film: Kaalaa Baazaar

Song: Apani to har aah ik tufaana hai

A double meaning song very cutely picturized on Dev Anand and Vahida
Rehmaan. Music between the stanzas is train whistle.

Another mention:

Film Aradhana
Song: Mere sapanoki raani kab aayegi tu

One from the baton of the duo S-J, inthe film Love Marriage (1959):

"dhiire dhiire chal chaand gagan mein....".

The "two" real Train-themed songs:

"rail gaadii rail gaadii chhukchhuk ......." - Ashok Kumar singing in
Aashirwad

and

"tuufaan mail...duniyaa ye duniyaa tuufaan mail...".

Happy Listenings.

I would add two more songs (that I like much more than the LP song :))
and as much as 'Rahi Matwale'

1. Hai apna dil to awara - Hemant Kumar (Solva Saal, SDB)
2. Badal jaaye agar mali - Mod Rafi (Baharen phir bhi aayengi, OPN)

In addition here are a couple of more

1. Apni to har aah ek toofan hai - Rafi (Kala Bazaar,SDB)
2. Hoga tumse pyaara kaun - Shailendra Singh(?) (Zamaane ko dikhaana
hai,RDB)
3. Dhanno ki aakhon mein - RD burman (Kitaab,RDB)
4. Chuk chuk chak chak Bombay se Baroda tak - Asha/? (Rafoo Chakkar,
RDB)

There was a Kishore song in 'Half Ticket' also. Though I forget the
lyrics.

First, the correct words are:

koii hasiinaa jab ruuTh jaatii hai to
aur bhii hasiin ho jaatii hai
##station## se gaa.Dii jab chuuT jaatii hai to
ek do tiin ho jaatii hai

Secondly, this is a gho.Daa-gaa.Dii song and not a relgaa.Dii song.

I remember Anand Bakshi having been charged with using nonsense
phrases in his songs just to fit rhyme in radio program "S Kumaars Kaa
Filmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Muqaddamaa". This was one of the examples
mentioned therein with the charge that he used 'ek-do-tiin' just to
fit the rhyme and that i doesn't mean anything. Other song mentioned,
IIRC, was 'goyaa-ke-chunaa.nche'. Does anyone remember that episode?

Being a complete newbie I am puzzled why all the songs have a film

No, no interest in a rocket. I am 'jumping the train' so to speak from
American Blues and though this theme may be common. :)

To answer your specific query the only instrumental piece that I know, that is
titled as based on a train journey is a piece called "The Hill Train" composed
by the late Ananda Shankar. (Since you are new to Indian music--he is the nephew
of Pt. Ravi Shankar). It's available on an album called "We Remember". If you
are looking for train rhythms though you will be disappointed, since the name of
the piece seems to have nothing to do with trains. They could have called it
"fuggedaboutit" and it would still be apt.

Another non-film number that has some good train beats incorporated into its
music is one called "Mai Ri" by a pop group called Euphoria. It is a
full-fledged song though and is not an instrumental. The picturization of the
song will give you an idea of the incorporation of the beats, since as the train
passes over a river bridge, the percussion changes from a clack-clack sound to a
hollow sound. Actually this could also fall into your category of "Blues" since
the lead singer is wailing about the girl he lost(though if you ask me, the
other girl towards the end of the video is the one you will find me swooning and
wailing over).

Hope this helps

There's another one too from the same compilation "dhak dhak kartii chalii,
jiivan kii rel re".
Point to be noted is that the commemoratives mostly have rare songs and they
take
time to be ingrained into the mind. Obviously they haven't got as many
listens as
the popular songs to be registered at the top of the head.

Hey Ritu that one KK gem was ...

Cheel Cheel Chillake Kajri Sunaye
Jhoom Jhoom Kavva Bhi Dholak Bajaye ...
Arre Wah Wah Wah ... Arre Wah Wah Wah ...

Hope the words are close to the mark with a KK prancing
all over that train compartment ... ANYTHING is possible !

Three more songs that come to my mind ...

1. Haathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka from Vidhata ...

2. The Shahrukh (no connection to me) and Malaika number Chhaiyya
Chhaiyya ...
and

3. A song Rishi Kapoor sang to a distressed Padmini Kolhapure in some
film which I do not care to remember.

MOST IMPORTANTLY ...
Sean DO look up the film Gandhi by Attenborough ...

In that, check out the sequence after Gopal Krishna Gokhale (DR.Lagoo)
urges a young Gandhi who has just returned from South Africa to
discover India ...
Gandhi takes off by trains and criss-crosses India
to the background score of a fabulous Sitar by Ravi Shankar.

That is a beautiful piece of cinema, frankly !

Trust this helps ...

In the meantime I was following American blues and the large part the train
plays. But coming back, I wondered if there was a musical niche in Indian
music with the same theme of a train as a life's journey, a leaving or a
coming home, using the evocative rhythms.

Most of the suggestions posted here appear to be 'film songs', which from my
very limited knowledge and experience sound to be like 'pop' songs (and I
don't know the language of course!). Some of them are fantastic, but I am
not sure that because they have been filmed on a train that they are on
theme and the phonetic spelling makes the others kind of hard to find.

When I go searching I immediately get lost because of the divisions
presented. Carnatic?, Hindustani?, North South, Classic? What would the film
songs suggested be classified as?

But anyway all the suggestions have been very interesting and a wonderful
experience. Thank you all.

Sean

Hi Seano

At a popular level Hindi film songs are dominant in India and these
are drawn from all kinds of different sources ... so I can fully
understand the mix ups that are likely.

After reading your note - two things come to my mind.

Definitely check out - Pather Panchali by Ray which has the train as a
symbolic transition in the lives of the characters and the music like
in most of Ray's work is excellent. You might like to then see the
entire Apu trilogy which is the journey of life over a lifetime of
Apu.

There is one more film song and I am not sure if it appeared in this
thread so far.

Zindagi Ke Safar Mein Guzar Jaate Hain from the film Aap Ki Kasam. The
song features Rajesh Khanna on travelling in a train on screen and the
sequence is taken as 'realistically' as is possible in Hindi comercial
cinema. And of course, the song is about the journey of life. Of
course, you also have intercuts of the rail track amongst other things
and the song is a nice one too.

Trust this two penny worth is helpful !

Cheers

And Hey Seano - let me gently point out a typo in your note ...
Gandhi is NOT spelt Ghandi ... but is spelt GANDHI :-)

In such a long thread, I don't know if I missed a mention of the song

Zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hai jo makaam
woh phir nahi aate

From Aap Ki Kasam which starts of with Rajesh Khanna getting into a
train and reminiscing.

Cheers!
