while growing up i used to think that he, amit kumar and nitin mukesh
were the sons of the famous troika. in fact in an interview i read
that a lot of people thought he was rafi's son.
but while one does feel sad for him, i feel it is nothing but
blackmail to use the media to embarrass arshad warsi ('half brother'
at that). i do not feel that for all the belongingness i guarantee the
livelihood of my siblings. cousins and half brothers would be a far
cry. to actually complain about that to a newspaper is really shady.
but then this forum is about music, so let us drop that thought.
coming back to anwar. there was a song in intequaam - jo unkee tamanna
hai barbaad hojaa... i always thought it was sung by anwar! it came as
a shock that was rafi. this is not an invitation for the rafi baiters,
just appreciation for anwar. :)
on a different note, do you actually get only 5k for singing in a bar?
Anwar's story is nothing new. Historically singers have not
fared well financially except established ones - there were
feweropportunities.
Now there are more opportunities, but
there are so many singers out there these days.
Just look at music shows on Indian TVs
exploring talent. Contestants get praises of absurd
level, such as "history making", "mind boggling".
I feel sorry for these contestants who take these commnets
literally and it gets to their head only to see
getting eliminated in a future round. For shows, it is
drama to get high ratings. Some of them get to sing one
or two songs for the judges (MDs) at ridiculously
low price. Then what? Music shows get next bacth
of contestants and story repeats itself. I had read an
article written by Sanjay patel in Hindi about
plight of young singers. I caanot find it right now.

I am surprised at the exaggerated compliments given to new
comers.Where is Punam or Sumedha.Their careers are killed by undue
importance given to them.I was shocked to listen to a mentor saying
Sumedha's rendition of Chupakese is beter that that of Sadhana
Saragam, Recently Shekhar said contestant had sunf Tinka Tinka beteer
that the original singer ( alisha).I would like to see how many songs
he gives to her future.Saw punam is one of the shows -he has lost
innocent face , has become fat and her voice has deteriorated all due
to syuch compliments heaped on her by a mentor.
Don't we have the concept of an agent, as they have in US?
Agent guides a person's professional life, getting jobs and making
arrangements etc.
Probably no truly professional agents in those days. There might have
been some who would have been useless or much, much worse.

Rafi and Kishore Kumar had their agents - Collection Agents
Those agents used to make sure that their 'Artists' receive
their remuneration before the recording of the song.
Kishore had his driver Abdul who would let Kishore know
in sign language that he had received the money at the time
of recording.
Before partition Rafi had his uncle who used to collect his
remuneration. After 1947 for many years Sardul Kwatra used
to collect Rafi's dues. After many years Sardul was forced to
leave this 'job' when Rafi felt that Sardul was not performing
his duties honestly. This was one of reasons for Sardul to leave
India.

wasnt sardul kwatra a 6 ft 2 inch burly man. wonder why he failed as a
collection agent?
also the reference in the thread was to a business agent. these guys
typically take 10% of the total billing as the fee for finding you
work.
i dont see any such thing in india (at least in delhi dont know about
bombay) even now. however there are informal 'settings' which exist.
so the recordist at the studio (who is typically given the job of
finding a singer for jingle etc) will call the guy who pays him a cut.
that becomes an informal agent. except that honest people who dont pay
a cut are out. this does not ensure that the best talent does the job.
that is one field where the new breed of composers like salim suleiman
vishal shekhar shankarl ehsan loy distinguish themselves from the
older lot. the trend of course was started by ar rahman. getting the
right voice for the song. and not composing with the singer in mind
beforehand (which is nothing else but a form of cronyism).
