Guru Dutt retrospective in New York

There was a retrospective of Guru Dutt’s at the Lincoln Centre in New
York some weeks ago – amazing of course. The films themselves – in
very good prints brought to NY by Arun Dutt, who introduced one of
them – I’d never seen before on the big screen, & I’m yet to get over
the experience. I still get a shiver thinking of the mehfil in Pyasa,
when Majaz starts reciting “roodad-e gham-e ulfat”.

The retrospective was poorly advertised, considering the effort that
had gone into bringing it all together, and attendance was very low.
I think there mustn’t have been more than 30 people watching Mr & Mrs
55 (it was the first time I’d seen it – and now I can’t get “thandi
hawa” out of my mind). But the small audience seemed, sadly, fitting
for a still misunderstood director.

But that’s by-the-by. Looking through the ISB song lyrics after the
watching the movies, I saw that some poor contributor had left a bunch
of gaps in “Ek do teen” from Kaagaz ke phool. I’ve tried to fill those
gaps (tho have probably added some new mistakes -- apologies in
advance).
