I myself don't rate ARR highly, but this sort of bashing is unfair.

<insert A.R.Rahman song here> is copied from <insert western source here>
because it is in the same 20-20,000Hz frequency band.
:)) that's a good one.
Talking of Rahman, I personally found his entire Jeans album inspired.
There are instances in songs when I think he's inspired by some Rafi song
or some RD song or even some Nadeem Shravan song, but can't really place
it. It's almost in the sense as "hamne dekhi hai in aankhon ki mahakti
khushboo.." Would that be what "intelligent inspiration" is, if there is
such a term that is? In any case, Rahman's music is to be felt and enjoyed
as it is.
Hema.
A. R. Rahman is at a higher level than most of the 90's music directors. I
don't believe he copies off of other's music, just by listening to it you can
feel that teh music is original and creative. There's a certain trademark that
he inserts in every one of his songs, just like the great ones before have,
like O.P. Nayyar, Naushad, S.D. Burman, and R.D Burman. Rahman belongs to this
group. It's hard to reference music by N-S, Anu Malik, and A-M, just by
listening to the their music because they are all alike, there's no
individuality among those three.
What do you define inspiration as? Well the indian way is to copy directly
like how Nadeem Sharvan, Anu Malik, and Anand Miland do. Let's look at the
REAL definition.
Inspiration: A stimulus to creativity in thought
THIS DOES NOT MEAN TO COPY, BECAUSE COPYING IS NOT CREATIVITY.
I think some people think that ARR gets "inspired" by english music is because
he uses the latest technology, but those people fail to feel and understand the
tune and rhythm of the music.
thanks

Last I checked, AR Rahman was as Indian as _ANY_ of the music directors
mentioned in your post.
jagadish
Actually this is not true. N-S have their trademark string rolls and
crescendos, and Anu Malik has his trademark slow, lazy, empty beats
(more prevelant these days than before) and a couple other details that
I can't really put into words. It sounds dubious, but these guys manage
to put their trademark stamp even on copied songs. Anything that sounds
different from these two but is still either copied or unmelodic I
attribute to A-M :).
Vishal is another composer with distinctive melodies. Jatin-Lalit too
are pretty much identifiable. The ones that I haven't gotten a hang of
yet (and maybe this is because I haven't heard too much of them) are
composers like Dilip Sen-Sameer Sen and Uttam Singh.

There are definitely snitches in many Rahman songs which sound almost
exactly like other Western classics I've heard (and I'm a Rahmaniac, so
don't flame me bhai :). For example, in the title song of "Daud", the
refrain is suspiciously like "If I were a rich man" from "Fiddler on the
Roof". (I will dismiss this as another instance of the Mozart-Salil rule
: every good composer borrows from every other good composer a few times
:-) ) But to compare the prelude of "Bharat hamko ..." to the prelude of
"Look into my eyes" (which the original poster did) is sheer ignorance
and wishful thinking.
Or maybe this depends on how one looks at it!
Pankaj
I completely agree with you!!!!!
