Song: teraa kaanton se hai pyaar pyaar
teraa kaanton se...
Film: Chunariya (1948)
Singer: Geeta Roy, Mohammed Rafi
Music: Hansraj Behl
Lyrics: Mulk Raj Bhakhri
*ing: Manorama, Wasti
Geeta Roy's voice in the 40s, rather like Rafi's in the same period,
had same 'still-evolving' quality, marked my a distinct tremulous edge
which imparted a plaintive, slightly nasal backdrop to her renditions.
The gorgeous melodies from movies like DO BHAI, DAROGAJI, ZEVARAAT,
JAAN PEHCHAAN, etc. Today's selection is another example, and it is
quite a delight to hear both these voices playing with each other
beautifully.
Part of it is also due to the way the song is structed. Rafi carries
most of it, with Geeta providing essentially supporting vocals and
alaapi, not unlike the Lata-Sudhir Phadke interplay in Sajni's 'qismat
kaa nahiin dosh...". One imagines a pair of wandering minstrels, an
older, bearded, transcendent-spiritualism-written-on-his-face sage
with an ektaara singing Rafi's pieces, with a younger protege backing
him up in Geeta's voice.
The soundtrack is quite a Geeta Roy trove, carrying her voice in six
of the ten songs on it, and each of them a pleasure to listen to. Will
post more from it in coming instalments.
Hrishi.
PS Changing the syntax for ATMJH subject lines to include the first
line of the song... this suggestion came by several years ago and it
seems like a good idea. Saves users a click if the song is unknown or
unappealing.
PPS The clip has an unfortunate background hiss which I was only
partly successful in weeding out.. apologies.
