I heard this song for the first time in 1987, when it was sung live on stage by
a friend during a Deewaali program hosted by a local Indian organization. The
song was appealing, but I had no idea how Lata had sung it in the film, because
I had not even seen the film then. It took me another few months to see the
film, and when I did, I could really appreciate it even much better. Much as I
love this song, I find the Suresh Wadekar-Asha Bhosle duet "dekho ye kaun
aayaa..." even more pleasant.

Amen! However just like in ""raah pe rahate hai.n", I wish RDB had taken Kishore
or Asha for this song. Lata tries her best, but her voice which is quite
high-pitched here, dilutes the magical feeling of hope that the lyrics and music
so wonderfully portray. I have always found this song to be a mood picker-upper.
The one problem is--I can't get it out of mind now.

Your analysis is dead-on, Ketan. A more mellow rendition would do
wonders. Of the alternatives you offer I feel Kishore is ruled out,
though. The tune seems to be designed for a female voice. Don't you
think ?

Umm..the lyrics definitely indicate that a female voice is needed. The tune--I
am not so sure. Compare this song to another wonderful breezy, full-of-hope song
composed by RDB. I am referring to "Main tumse pyaar karti/karta hoon" sung by
Lata and Kishore from the movie "Mahachor"(don't bother--Ravi Krishna has
already made a joke on this one). Lata is high pitched even in that song and
manages to dilute that full-of-hope effect here too. However the moment Kishore
starts singing, the song once again becomes magical. The spirit in both, the
"Mahachor" and the "Saveray Waali Gaadi(SWG)" tunes seem similar to me. Which is
why I wished that Kishore too had been a part of the "SWG" song.
Still, hats off to Lata. The way she full throatedly sings "teri baahar..."
makes me keep rewinding the tape again and again and again........again.

It is a problem when you are at a red light, listening to this song with your
eyes closed, taking in every beautiful note and all of a sudden people start
honking, waving fists, showing you the finger---and all that because the light
happened to turn green at some point and is now yellow. Philistines!!!!
