Hello IRfan:
For quite some time ...about till last year, I was very curious to
research this person VARMAJI and his co,SHARMAJI (now Khayyam) as to
their 'roles' (the percentage) in the music making of HEER RANJHA
('49). Khayyam, when contacted on phone, has not divulged any info
when I referred to his claim of his association with Chisti during
1942-44. I was curious indeed to find out from him if at all he
remembered anything about Chisti from his close association. He drew a
blank. I disconnected the phone at once.

Now this man, VARMAJI, after I saw your clippin on the YOU TUBE...also
does not mention anything about HEER RANJHA or Wali, the producer. He
only mentions 1946 of his entry.Very pathetic ! The male-n-female
voices in that clippin-song is very resonant .. the music is OK

The reason I am asking about them is to find out the 'true identity'
of the composer in that lovely duet from HEER RANJHA: Dil yoon-yoon
karta hai... Although the 78rpm states as Varmaji-Sharmaji; I am not
all prepared to accept this because :
- both these newcomers were 'hurriedly picked up' by Walli for
completing the songs since Aziz Khan had left the scenario, or was not
available at that moment. Remember, Aziz Khan was THE 2nd FAVORITE of
Walli all along..even in BEEWEE('50) & PUTLI ('50) ... whether GH
composed in the latter film any songs, is irelevant.
- These two juveniles, thence around 1945-46...how old must they have
been? This is a very vital info for my research indeed for the song in
question. Lets presume: Sharmaji could have been about 21-22 & Varmaji
too..somewhat there..Under the circumstances and keeping in mind the
fact of their "NIL EXPERIENCE in music making" ....I feel the song in
question 100 % is the creative work of Aziz Khan , repeat Aziz Khan !
May be, the tune was well ready fo get recorded..when coincidently,
Aziz Khan had tp leave or left suddenly...and Walli got it recorded
through these two novices !

- One more significant feature of this melodious song.Geeta Roy is
partnering an unknown male voice. Its definitely not GMD. If at all
Sharmaji has sung this song with Geeta Roy, surely, he would have
raved about it even now. On the contrary, he never ever mentions
anything about HEER RANJHA's music-making from their POV.! .

Thus , my conclusion is : Dil yoon yoon karta hai.. is a duet by Geeta
Roy & Aziz Khan under his OWN music.

Over to you;

I distinctly remember that in an old interview on Zee Television
during early 90s, Khaiyyamji had said that he sang this duet
and...teri jaat akbari...with geeta roy. He also said that the first
song he sang was for hanuman prasad in rasili ...kyun neh laga mukh
mod gaya with geeta roy. Listen to these songs carefully...listen to
him whenever
he appears on television or his recordings carefully. I have no doubt
in my mind that the voice in these songs is of Khaiyyamji.

Will reconfirm it whenever I meet him again. My grandfather
and he is from the same place...a small town by name Rahon in
Punjab.

Its Ok what you say, Mahesh. But...

Why does Khayyam get 'on his nerves' when he is addressed as Sharmaji.
On the contrary, at his present age now,if at all any one addresses
him by this old name; it should raise his 'eyebrows' ! Isn't it?

Another bit of info I asked him was:

Khayyam claims in his earlier interview that he LEARNT...repeat LEARNT
classical music from the famous duo: H - B at he height of their
popularity in-around 1948-50
Let me tell you one thing, Mahesh. This H - B duo had no time thence
to teach anyone music ..whoever it may be. This is a fact. True ,
Khayyam was given just ONE LINE to sing with Zohra in Romeo-
Juliet('47). And then, his name too was not indicated on the disk or
anywhere as such...but Khayyam, DOES CLAIM his identity in that duet
with Zohra. HOW CLEVER HE IS !..Prior to that , he does not remember
any of his songs. He does not know who was Aziz Khan . He does not
remember the R.P.Sharma. As a matter of fact, this name is credited
with a solo in LAKHPATI ('48) under H - B ! This R.P Sharma has also
sung under Sardar Malick. He refutes that. ..vis-avis; its confusion
with him.

OK. Forget all that ; Let me ask you one ordinary question. I am 67 at
present. You ask me anything about me what I remember when I was a
young boy between 17 - 25 yrs of age. Surely, I can say a good many
things . I suppose anyone could do that without any hesitation about
their individual escapades. Why not Khayyam then? Why is he reeling of
known info from FOOTPATH onward. Why not prior to that ..when
querried ! He is unable to describe anything about Chisti.. though he
says the latter was his 'guru'.

Kindly offer your thoughts.

Mr Vikram:

Khayyam may broadcast and tell on the top of his voice anything...that
is not the POV. Is he ready to answer my quiestions about him as
claimed by him in his book or broadcast on the air.

Simply saying, he was associated with Chisti is not enough, Vikramjee.
I am a researcher...trying to probe and find out/ discover/unearth
little-n-little of more-n-more. You are a mere LISTENER.You have no
time to go through all details. Thats the TRUTH

Thats the difference between I and the rest of RMIMers.I go to any
length in depth,if the situation warrants. You or anyone else will
just remark: marne dey..kisko padi hai..!
