Hi!

I wounder if some one can email/post meaning of "GARDISH", (Urdu word?)
I believe it means "Struggle" or "Sky". Is there any word for "sky"
which sounds like "GARDISH" in Urdu ?

Thanks in advance.

Reminded of a Rafi gem where "struggle" seems to be the meaning:

Raha gardishon mein hardam
Mere ishq ka sitara
Kabhi dagmagayi kashti
Kahin kho gaya kinaraaa..

[No I am not ready to sing this yet .. but then you always have to be
ready .. just in case :-) ]

Other songs with gardish...seem to imply "sky"

Gardish mein ho taare na ghabrane pyaare
Gar tu himaat na hare tho honge vyare-nyare

One more Mukesh song:

Kal khel mein hum ho na ho
Gardish mein taare rahenge sada.

Doesn't suit very well in the last example, though.

Try Gardish = orbit

Gardish meN taare hona is a phrase. Literally would mean the stars are in
their orbits (so what's new about stars being in their fixed paths to
whatever? :) ).......
But the phrase refers to bura waQt aana. After all astrology, nujoom and
such like were believed in during the ancient times { And Ganesha says, even
today ;) }. So your stars have moved into a bad position for you (?!) would
be more like it.

Hence the song "Gardish meN ho taare, na ghabrana pyaare".
And using just the literal meaning of gardish, i.e. orbitting or as the
dictionary said "in revolution" (as in the revolution of the earth) it can be
found in "Awaara hooN (accordion piece)
Awaara hooN ( ----"---------)
Ya gardish meN hooN aasmaan ka taara hooN"

Later,
Ikram.

The word literally means, I believe, 'the milky way'. It's another
matter that interpretation might appear to lend it a different
meaning.

Here is Pstat for the song:

Singer : Rafi
Film : Do Badan
MD : Ravi
Lyric : Shakeel
*ring : Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh.

BTW, Ravi has some of his very good songs in this movie:

Bhari Duniya mein akhir dil ko samjhane kahan jaye : Rafi
Naseem mein jiske jo likha tha, woh teri mehfil mein kam aaya : Rafi
Lo agayee unki yaad, woh nahi aaye : Lata
Jab chali thandi hawa, jab uthi kaali ghata : Asha

"Gardish", IMHO, means moving about/misfortune/wandering about. Some
examples to support my opinion :

By who-else-but Ghalib:

raat din gardish meiN haiN saat aasmaaN
ho rahega kuchch-na-kuchch ghabraayaiN kya ?

or this one by Ghalib again

kyooN gardish-e-mudaam se ghabra na jaaye dil ?
insaan hooN, pyaala-o-saaGHar naheeN hooN maiN

One sung by Rafi. PStats not available :

raha gardishoN meiN har dam, mere ishq ka sitaara

If it is regarding the recent Jackie Shroff film, then Gardish means
what Khalid Mohammed had aptly described as 'Gory Dish'.

I was under the impression

"Gardish mein hein Taare" meant One's stars (as in horoscope) were in a
disturbed pattern/configuration.

Sheeesh...And to think all these years, I must have used this line in my
conversation numerous times without actually knowing what it meant. :-)
