Laxmikant : A tribute -(3)

Laxmikant never hesitated to confirm the well-known fact that
the greatest influence on their music was of Shankar-Jaikishan's
music. It was ironic that LP's career also went the same way as
that of SJ's-from good to bad to worse!Like SJ-Laxmikant-
Pyarelal too were obsessed by big orchestra, big banners &
big number of films. Finally that's what killed their music.

Laxmikant once admitted that they were the ones who brought
the practice of undercutting the price in the film music. His
logic was simple-"If someone is selling something at ten rupees
& if we could offer the same goods at two rupees-what is wrong?"

Despite all these flaws LP's music was not only catchy but
also classy-quite consistently in their early years & in patches
in the later years. This is what makes them so special in
comparison to the latter generations of MDs.

I have always felt that LP's music in the earlier mythological
films & costume dramas(the Darasingh starrers) is much superior
to their later, more famous soundtracks for the big banners.
'Sant Gyaneshwar','Sati Savitri','Harischandra Taramati',
'Lootera','Aaya toofan'...anyday I would prefer these
soundtracks to the biggies like 'Bobby','SSS' or 'Premrog'!

The semi-classical songs composed by LP are in a class of
their own.'Sant Gyaneshwar' had a gem of a song in 'Bahut din
beete'.'Sati Savitri' had 'Jeevandor tumhisang baandhi',
'Kabhie to miloge jeevan saathi','Sakhi ri peeka naam' &
'Tum gaganke chandrama'.'Harishchandra-Taramati' featured
the superb 'Meghawa gagan beech jhaanke'.
This command over the raag based compositions was the plus
point of this music in those days.'Suno sajana papeehene'
(Aaye din baharke'),'Saanz savere adharonpe mere'('Madhavi'),
'Bandhan toote naa sanwariya'('Momki gudiya'),Diya jage saari
raina'(Chhota bhai')...all these songs proved this point
time & again. Not surprisingly all these songs were rendered by
Lata-their first choice female playback singer.

Lata's contribution in the success of LP was summed up by
Pyarelal when he said "We owe 50% of our success to Lataji."
Laxmikant said-"Even when we were new-comers we never
compromised about taking Lataji as our playback singer.
In those days Lataji was charging Rs.3000/- per
song.Sometimes we used to receive just RS.5000/- from the
producer for our song.So after paying up for our big orchestra
we had to shell out money from our pockets to afford Lata for
our songs."

LP's much- renowned versatility was evident in the way they
composed songs for Lata. There were superb romantic songs like
'Kya kahoon aaj kya baat hai'(Dillagi),'Kisne pukara mujhe'(Pyar
kiye ja)'Dhadka hai dilmein pyar tumhara'('Jaal)'Neend kabhie
raheti thiaankhonmein'(Aasra),'Ruk jaa ai hawa'('Shagird')&
'Chalo sajana jahantak ghata chale'(Mere humdum mere dost).
There were soulful devotional numbers like 'Jyotse jyot'(Sant
Gyaneshwar) 'Kaanha Kaanha'(Shagird)& 'Jise yeh duniya
thukaraye'('Darpan').
Then there were ghazals like 'Meri zindaghike chiragko'(Jaal),
cabaret songs like 'Aa jaanejaan'('Inteqam'),party songs like
'Diye jalaye pyarke'('Dharti kahe pukarke'),child songs like
'Maa mujhe apne aanchalmein chhupa le'('Chhota bhai'),mother's
songs like 'Gudiya humse roothi rahogi'(Dosti),haunting
songs like 'Yeh raatbhi jaa rahi hai'(Sau saal baad),qawwali
based songs like 'Hum pyar kiye jayenge'(Aaya toofan),naughty
numbers like 'Rootha hai to mana lenge'(Jwarbhata)...the
sheer variety was amazing!

LP used Asha mainly for the frothy numbers like 'Bujha de'
(Imtihan)&'Hungama ho gaya'(Anhoni). Her rendition of 'Khat likh
de'('Aye din baharke') was superb. The soundtrack which I
recommend for the Asha fans is 'Loafer'.The way she has sung
'Motiyonki ladi hoon main','Koi shaheri babu' & 'Kahan hai woh
deewana' is something only she can do!

The duets in LP's music were always catchy.'Woh hai zara khafa
khafa'(Shagird),'Rut bekarar hai'(Maa aur mamta),'Chhed mere
hamrahi'(mastana),'Woh jab yaad aaye'(Parasmani)-all these
Rafi-Lata duets left their mark & so did the other duets like
'Shaam dhale jamunakinare'('Pushpanjali'-Lata-Manna Dey),'Baat
hai ik boondsi dilke pyalemein'('Jalbin machhali..'-Lata-Mukesh)
Lata-Kishore duets like 'Sare ga ma pa'(Abhinetri) & 'Khoobsurat
haseena'('Mr.X in Bombay') are still a joy to listen to.

How & why this talented duo lost their way & wandered into
mediocrity is a matter of debate.Maybe it was a demand of the
changing tastes & trends or maybe the creative juices just dried
up over the years.Lata's observation is interesting.Acc. to her
"Initially Laxmikant & Pyarelal both were involved in composing
the tunes.Every song was composed after a lot of discussion &
collective efforts.Later on only Laxmi took over the tunes &
Pyare started only looking after the orchestration. This factor
added to the excessive number of films they were handling.
Afterall how long can you go on giving variety?Repetition is
bound to creep in!"
This is what happened
after the seventies & repetitive, predictable tunes were
churned out year after year.Occassional flashes of brilliance
like 'Ghoonghata gira hai zara'(Palkonki chhaonmein),
'Is manko ik thes lagi'(Ek nayee paheli),Man kyon baheka
ri baheka'(Utsav),'Dhadkan zara ruk gayee hai'(Prahar)-still
held out a flickering promise for some creativity.
Now even that flicker has died down!
Laxmikant is no more.
Long live LP!

:Dr.Mandar.

And I strongly recommend the film for Mumtaz fans too. (are there any left
anymore or just me?). Only she could have done justice to these songs on
the screen.

I thought the music for the movie "Aaya Toofan" was
composed by the trio Lala Asar Sattar. But maybe my
memory is at fault. Can anybody verify this ?
Also, there is a reference to a song from "Abhinetri"
later in the article. The music for this movie was
composed by S.D. Burman. Since this soundtrack is
quite well-known, it is difficult to account for the
error.

Are you sure that Abhinetri was by SDB? I somehow recall it as by Kalyandji
Anandji.

'abhinetri' was surely composed by LP. It had two good Lata solos ('o ghata
sanwari..' and 'sajna o
sajna..') and one great Lata solo ('khinche humse sanware...').

Dr. Mandar, for all the praises bestowed on the soundtrack of 'loafer', you
forgot to mention the two
best songs from that film. Rafi's wonderful 'aaj mausam bada beimaan hai..'
and the best song in the
film, Lata's 'main tere ishq mein...'

Cheers,

Hi Friends, your memory *is* playing tricks on you!
I am 100% sure that both 'Aaya toofan' & 'Abhinetri' had music by LP.
'Aaya toofan' was released in 1964 & had lyrics by Asad Bhopali.
'Abhinetri'was released in 1970 & had lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

'Abhinetri' has many of my favourites like 'O ghata saawari','Sajana o
sajana' & 'Khinche humse saaware'-all by Lata.

'Aya Toofan' is indeed an L-P film, one of their earliest
(1964, the same year as 'Dosti'). Had a nice Rafi solo

abhi kamsin ho, naadaa.n ho, jaan-e-jaana
yoo.n meraa dil toD dogi meraa dil, pehle seekho dil lagaana

The same year, another "kamsin-naadaan" song came out of the S-J
camp, from 'Aayi Milan Ki Bela'; this one a Rafi/Lata tandem:

tum kamsin ho, naadaa.n ho, naazuk ho, bholi ho
sochataa hoo.n mai.n ke tumhe pyaar naa karoo.n

One could tell from the two songs that L-P were headed upward
and S-J the other way. Some unknown actor in a Dara Singh
got to sing a better love-ballad to Nishi or Helen than
Rajendra Kumar to Saira Banu!

As far as I remember the debut film of the Lala, Asad, and
Sattaar (I think it is an MD trio!) was another Dara Singh
starrer 'Sangram'. The music was close to 'Parasmani' standards,
although this trio did not get the same kind of lift. Had
a Lata-Kamal Barot duet

Dam Dam Dam Dam Damaroo baaje

and a Rafi lovesong

mai.n to tere haseen khayaalo.n me.n kho gayaa
duniyaa ye keh rahi hai ke deevaana ho gayaa

They followed up with a mythological 'Jahaan Sati Wahan Bhagwaan',
with a smashing title song by Rafi. Don't know what other
film they have. I seem to recall there being a film with
music by a subset of the trio, Lata and Sattaar.

The music of 'Abhinetri' ('70) is also by L-P. It's a decent
enough soundtrack, but nowhere near as well-known as, say 'Abhimaan'
of SDB. 'Abhinetri' had a number of cute Lata songs, full of
missing element!

sajanaa, o sajanaa

o ghaTaa saa.nvari, thoDi thoDi baa.nvari
hone lagi hai barasaat kyaa

khi.nche ham se saa.nvare

and

dha.Dakan har dil ki

It also had the song where KK learns classical music from
Lata (might be Shashi Kapoor and Hemamalini on the screen):

sa re ga ma pa ppa pa
gaa re mere sang mere saajanaa

Thanks Dr. Mandar, for the write-up on Laxmikant.
My personal Asha-LP favourites are "Ae dushman jaa", from Patthar Ke Sanam, and
"Angadayiya le le kar" from Sweekar.

This actually seems to be quite a common phenomenon. Ravindra Jain has
wonderful music in small-budget movies, but movies like RAM TERI GANGA
MAILI suck.

"jaago re prabhaat aayaa" is good too. Despite the fact that Todi is not a
dawn raaga and the orchestration is awful, the main melody of the song is
first-rate. The semi-classical songs that LP composed, in fact, almost
invariably had a wonderful main melody, but most of the time this was
marred a raaga inappropriate to the lyrics and/or terrible orchestration.
"saa.Njh Dhale gagan tale" is in the dawn raaga Vibhas, for example.
"maikaa piyaa bulaave apane ma.ndiravaa" (SUR SANGAM) is a lovely
Kalavati, but the orchestration is bizarre.

Oh please! "ha.ngaamaa ho gayaa" is absolutely terrific, but the rest of
the songs are eminently forgettable.

My pal Dave (who doesn't speak a word of Hindi and hadn't heard any indian
music until six months ago) says "ha.ngaamaa ho gayaa" would be perfect at
a drag show. :-) I haven't had the guts to try it yet.

Hmm. Most of the songs you've been listing throughout the tribute are
mediocre at best, so I'm rather surprised you should ask:

> How & why this talented duo lost their way & wandered into
> mediocrity is a matter of debate.

Really?

But I do agree that LP had talent; they just chose to squander it away.

"andho.n kii nagarii me.n kaaNaa raajaa." Given that LOAFER has a mediocre
soundtrack, it's hardly worthwhile picking favorites.

Some years ago, Ashok had a write-up on Suman Kalyanpur where he outlined
the conditions under which one could be sure that the MD worked with Suman
as a deliberate choice, not because they couldn't get Lata. I won't rehash
his criteria (they're in Satish S's RMIM archives, if anybody cares), but
I will mention one LP song that does meet these criteria. Quite a cute
song:

Daari, Di Daar, Diiri Daar,
hai kal itavaar, ho munna jaaegaa baazaar
do paise kii dulahan legaa,
chha: paise kaa haar...

from MAN MANDIR. There's a lullaby in the movie sung by Lata, but I can't
remember the way it goes....

LP also gave us one of the few KK-Suman duets in existence. Not a good
duet, but worth mentioning just because there are so few:

teraa meraa, meraa teraa, teraa meraa, meraa teraa
mil gayaa dil dil se, ???? mush_qil se

from NAGIN. And they do have one halfway decent Suman solo: "zaraa Thahar
jaao" from KHUDA KASAM.

Sometimes I am glad that I do not have a classical music background. I can
enjoy songs just because of their good tunes. I just love saa.njh dhale and
a knowledge that it is based on a morning (oops. dawn) raga does not spoil
it at all. Indian classical music has a grand tradition which is capably
carried by many contemporary artistes. If I want to listen to a pure
rendition of a raga (obviously I will not understand it like you but can
still enjoy), I will listen to Bhimsen or Bismillah or .... and not try to
find it in a hindi film song.

>Oh please! "ha.ngaamaa ho gayaa" is absolutely terrific

That's the spirit. I am pretty sure that it is not based on any raga but I
could be wrong.

Don't be hard on Surajit. Blame it on Harish Suvarna. He was the one
who forced "bosshood" on Surajit. Surajit is just trying to live up
