From my limited understanding of Ragas, I find this song based on Raag Bihag.
Please correct me if I am wrong, I feel RD has used this Raaga quite often. Does
any one know any other songs based on this Raaga ?
Another one "mithe bol bole, bole payaliya" also by RD, is this also in Bihag ?
I dont quite remember the words of "piyaa baawari", but I am trying to put down
whatever I remember, so that those who know will be tempted to correct me.
Movie : Khoobsurat
MD: RD Burman
Lyrics : Gulzar
Singers: Asha Bhonsale, Ashok Kumar
nii saa ga ma pa nii dha pa
piyaa baawarii piyaa baawarii
pii kahaa.n pii kahaa.n piyaa piyaa bole re
ho Daali Daali piyaa, phoolo.n ki......
phoolo.n se chun ke rango.n ki chaadar bune
hu_ii baawarii, bhai baawari, aaa ...,
kaali kaali piyaa, saawan ke baadal chale,
baadal chunke, aa.nkho.n me kaajal bhune,
hu_ii baawari, bhai baawari, aa, aa....,
between two verses, there is also Ashok Kumar
singing, reciting a Radha-Krishna song, words I dont remember,
but something like :
"jamuna ke taT par...
.....
mei.n haari jaa jaa ri,
mei.n haari jaa jaa ri"
Some one please correct the above song (there is plenty of scope) and help to
put down the full song.
thanks and
best regards

This one is a little hard to place, but I would be inclined to put it in the
category of Mishra Khamaj. Comments anyone?

Definitely not. This is a Mishra Bhairavi.
Some songs based on Behag - "Koi Gaata Main So Jaata" from Alaap
"Hamare Dil Se Na Jaana" from Udan Khatola
"Tere Pyaar Men Dildaar" from Mere Mehboob
"Mere Dil Ke Geet Chup The" from ??? (I think it's by
Meena Kapoor)
"Ae Dil-e-Beqaraar Jhoom" from Shah Jahan by K.L.Saigal
"Pal Bhar Ki Pehchaan" (non-film) by Manna Dey
"Tere Sur Aur Mere Geet" from Goonj Uthi Shehnaai
Cheers,
Sanjeev

It's indeed by Meena KApoor and film is Aakash (1953). MD Anil Biswas. Is it
available ? On which album ? What's your source ?

I feel "Beeti na bitaayi raina" from "Parichay" is also
based on Behag.
Afzal
Looks like no one is sure about these raagas. The bosses should really look into
it and confirm.
I too feel that "Beeti na bitayi raina" is based on Bihag. and I still feel that
"piya bawari" and "mithe bol bole, bole payaliya" are also based on Bihag,
though these two have been challenged. (The one in bhairavi is "jhoothe naina
bole, sachi batiya" from Lekin(Asha !))
Also how about "naam gum jayega, chehra ye badal jayega" Is this also based on
Bihag ?
That is why I feel that RD has quite a few songs in Bihag.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Dhanashri
"jhoothe nainaa bole" is unmistakably Bilaskhani Todi, _not_ Bhairavi.
Warm regards
Abhay
Rightly so.
"beeti nA bitAye" has elements of both Khamaj and Bihag and some
that are beyon these two. For instance, the mukhDA "beeti nA botAye rainA"
is just the standard bihAg phrase P m G M G, S G (where m=tivra madhyam).
The antarA employs the komal nishAd amply and is khamAj-like in its
opening bars but then swerves elsewhere. This kind of promiscuity is
entirely in character with RD Burman, who could almost never be accused
of fidelity to any one rAga.
"mithe bol" is not in Bihag. It is best assigned, as S. Ramabhadran
noted earlier, to Mishra Bhairavi.
>Also how about "naam gum jayega, chehra ye badal jayega" Is this also based on
>Bihag ?
No. It has a kalyAN-esque base, but employs varied sanchAris of bilAwal,
khamAj etc.
>That is why I feel that RD has quite a few songs in Bihag.
We will simply advise that you cultivate some new feelings.
