Just heard the song and was wondering if anyone else noticed the lyrics (Swanand
Kirkire) which seem to be a lift from one of Prasoon Joshi's songs. Or maybe
it's the same theme(of the song) that makes the lyrics seem similar.

Which part do you feel Kirkire has lifted, and from which Joshi song,
specifically?
If it's the "saari 'umr mar mar ke jee liye, ik pal to ab hamein jeene
do", I don't think it's a Joshi invention. Yours Truly has said
similar things about a decade and a half ago, and so have others
before him, I'm sure.

Ahh I was hoping someone would get this mini-quiz. The clue is--it consists of
greek and chemical symbols.
I am not saying the whole song is lifted. All I am saying is that the usage of
these very symbols makes the writer seem a tad lazy. Coming on the back of his
Gulal song which was essentially a Sahir re-do, there is a feeling of deja-vu.

I have yet to listen to 3-Idiots so cannot comment on that but the
song from Gulaal was written by Piyush Mishra, not by Swanand. He was
just one of the singers.

Ah, you were talking about the "RDB" song by Joshi. I didn't even pay
attention to that part of the 3 Idiots song -- mea culpa. I was just
trying to think where the *tune* was copied from.

I'm sure you saw this coming, din'tya?!
I am referring to the irony here... coming on the heels of the huge
discussion about what matters more (music or lyrics) or whether lyrics
matter at all (sic).

I don't think the theme is the same. The RDB song was beautiful in its
context. Self professed rebels taking responsibility for their
callousness towards textbook learning and giving more emphasis on
learning through life's experiences, blended with the unsolved
questions and unrest in their minds.
The theme for this song is the perspective of "3 idiots" probably. You
would think they have had a wretched existence if you didn't know
better. The writer started off with a noble thought of living
childhood carefree all over again rather than being pushed through
it. But words like "h2so4 ne saara bachpan jalaa dala" and "saari umr
mar mar ke ham jiye" are preposterous. They don't do justice to that
thought. Yes, they sure need to grow up again...and realize that their
childhood has been much sunnier than those who actually lead dark
lives.
