No idea about the identity of "Indian". Since this issue was raised in the
recent past and had been answered by Richard(?), I thought this might be of some
interest.
While divulging the truth behing "Breathless" he still does not tell us how it
was executed? If it was just voice overlapping, how is it new to music? RDB did
it back in Jewel Thief for "Baithe hai kya uske paas"(according to Asha, in an
interview) and subsequently for Ijazat among others.
Also what SPB song are they talking about? Filmi/Non-filmi? Which movie? MD?
Thanks

to Shankar Mahadevan: (repeat Q) Namaskaarams! Welcome to Rediff Chat. I wanted
to ask you a question regarding the 'Breathless' song. Was it spliced together
to give us an illusion of being sung in one breath? In fact I am reminded of a
song by SPB sung in Tamizh that did the same thing, but in that case he DID
actually sing the whole thing in one breath (meaning the whole stanza -- not the
whole song). Did that inspire you to do this one? (Please do not misconstrue my
question. I absolutely LOVED the 'Breathless' song)
Shankar Mahadevan (Tue Jul 6 1999 6:38 IST)
to Indian: First of all I am a human being so it's impossible to hold my breath
for three minutes or else I would have been a dead man :) The song is a concept
song and we have executed it perfectly. For your information, SPB has also not
sung that entire para in one breath which he admitted openly. And NO, I was not
influenced by that song.

SM is correct. There is some conspicuous, though not OBVIOUS editing in
the Tami(zh)l song, which is a beautiful one:
Song: maNNil inda kaadal anDri yaarum vaazhdal koodumo
Film: keladi kaNmaNi
Music: iLaiyaraaja
i believe the song is picturized on spb himself (he's been in at least
a few movies, in this one he's a police inspector (?)).

This film was later dubbed into Telugu, complete with a Telugu
version of this song. I don't remember the name of the Telugu
version of this film, however? Does anyone know/remember?

True. The film was also a moderate hit.

I guess the movie is "O paapa laali", with SPB and Radhika
SPB is supposed to have sung the stanzas of the song breathless,
atleast that's what the picturization suggests (with SPB taking a
breath after each stanza).
SPB does a lot of experiments in his rendition of songs (though, at
times, he overdoes it).
have a nice day
