Hello everyone.

This posting is on behalf of Sandeep Joshi. He has raised a very

netters.

: I have a question regarding the Rafi
: song "ae dil hain mushkil jeena yahaan"
:
: The other day, one of my office colleagues from Sweden
: was whistling this tune which was very similar to
: the Hindi song...
:
: Now comes the funniest part. One Japanese guy overheard
: our discussion and said that there exists a Japanese
: song with the SAME tune. hmmm... strange.
:
: Does anybody know as to which is the original ?
: Sandeep Joshi Email : sj...@adams.com

The Swedish guy must have been whistling the tune of the popular
American folk song "Clementine". It goes like:

In a cavern, by the canyon, excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner, forty-niner, and his daugher Clementine

The refrain (after each stanza) goes:
Oh my darling! Oh my darling! Oh my darling! Clementine
Thou art lost and gone for ever, dreadful sorry Clementine

The tune is a catchy, happy one, but the poem, if I remember
correctly, describes a sad story (set in the California gold rush
period). The last stanza, (where the girl drowns in the river) starts:
Rosy lips above the water, blowing bubbles mighty fine...

This song predates "ai dil hai mushkil", but all the stanzas in
"Clementine" are sung to the same tune, so the antaras in the C.I.D
song seem to be innovations.

As regards the Japanese dude, maybe we should not rule out the
possibility that he might be an OPN fan.

Regards,
Preeti Ranjan

===> Clamentine ? That is the tune I have always associated this song with.

Great info, soon some of these info will legalise Bapi Lahiri, and will
also put Ravi Krishna out of business.
If my memory serves me right there is also a nursery rhyme, which goes
like "stomach aching stomach aching stomach aching .... just now" I
don't remember anything else, which has a very similar tune to "yeh hai
mumbai meri jaan".

I would like to know who MDed the KK song, Pyaar bantthe chalo.....
which was another lift-off from Ron Goodwin Orchestra, as was
the title song of Mohabbat isko kehte hain.

You think the song needs to be re-recorded? :-) At least one more
would need to be transformed: "i hai Mumbai nagariya ko dekh babuwa..."
Since the original singers are not around, some imitators will have to
be invited for the renditions. By the way, there's one song with the
word 'Bombay' in it that I heard a friend singing long ago, but have
no info about the origin. I wonder if it's a film song:
Bambai ne rehne diya, Bambai ne sone diya,.....
...pyar ka saambhar pila ke mujhe, dose-waali ne dil le liya...
(although the description fits Chennai better than Mumbai)

You are right about the "stomach aching" tune - it's the same as
Clementine. Some stanzas I can recall are:
Eating peanuts, eating peanuts, eating peanuts...just now

Stomach aching, stomach aching, stomach aching...just now

Call the doctor, call the doctor, call the doctor...just now
...
Dont know if this one has a happy or sad ending. :-)

Couldn't you grasp the profound meaning there, he seems to hint
that even thogh Mumbai did so much for him he fell for a chennaite
and he is just reflecting the whole sequence in his mind :-)

You are right I remember call the doctor ... now, but am unable to add
anything more.

If other RMIMers contribute to the nursery rhyme maybe atleast our quest
will have a happy ending.
