This thing is has been bothering me for last 2 days.I am trying to find
the songs with the word "shabnam" (dew) in them. I don't know why I
had(have) this notion that there are numerous songs, in which the
heroine's face is compared with "oas ki boond" or she is compared with the
"subah ke mausam me, patto pe jami hui shabnam" etc. But I am (right now)
unable to recall even a single song with a word Shabnam in it. Please
help.
Verna raat bhar neend nahi aayegi.

I wish you had posted this query about a year back when active research was
being conducted on songs with "Shabnam" in them at Lehigh! Don't ask me
why because I was merely a consultant :-) Many a sleepless night was spent in
compiling such a list. "Shabnam" is not so common a word and we had done a good
job and come up with a decent number of songs... If only I had written that list
down :-(
Anyway, here's what I could come up with after scanning my database yet again.
Important keywords for this search are: Shabnam and rona. Here are the first
four hits:
1. "Jab raat ko SHABNAM roti hai, kho jaate hain hum faryaadon me...."
(Phir teri kahani yaad aai, phir tera fasana yaad aaya.. Lata in Dil Diya Dard
Liya.. the best song in this Naushad movie)
2. "Haalat pe meri chand taare ro gae SHABNAM..."
(Ye sham ki tanhaaiyaan aise mere tera GHam... Lata)
3. "SHABNAM bhi roe, main woh aasmaan hun..."
(Aansu bhari hai ye jeevan ki raahen... Mukesh)
4. "Hans hans ke bahaaren to SHABNAM ko rulati hain
Aaj apni mohabbat par dariya ko rulaana hai..."
(Hum dard ke maaron ka itna hi fasana hai... Talat in DaaGH)
Other hits:
5. The famous Kati Patang song:
Mera naaaaaaaaaaaam hai SHABNAM
Pyaar se log mujhe kehte hain Shabbo (Asha)
6. "SHABNAM ghaTa chandni ban jaati hai dosto..." (not very sure about this)
(Dreamgirl.. title song by KK)
7. "kabhi shola kabhi SHABNAM, kabhi dil ho kabhi dhaRkan
tum hi ho tum meri humdum...."
(KK in "Ye naena, ye kaajal... khoobsoorat si tum ho GHazal...")
8. "Aisa karna thha piya
Kyun SHABNAM ko shola banaya..." (Not very sure about this one either)
(Lata in "O mere bairaagi bhanwra, mujhe taRpaao na..."
9. "TaRapte dil pe yun girti hai
Tere nazar se pyaar ki SHABNAM (2)
Jalte hue jungal par jaise
Barkha barse ruk ruk thham thham
Chham chham...." (wonderful chorus)
(Lata in that awesome Sahir/Jaidev combo "Raat bhi hai kuchh bheegi bheegi..."
from Mujhe jeene do... This movie had some wonderful songs such as "Tere bachpan
ko jawaani ki dua deti hun..." and "Ab koi gulshan na ujRe ab watan aazaad
hai...." Rafi Sahab's voice and Sahir's lyrics are absolutely great in this
song.
>Verna raat bhar neend nahi aayegi.
Neend aapko ab to aa jaaegi.... but it's grossly unfair to make others lose
their sleep while trying to work on your project :-) But, it's real fun to come
up with songs with such seemingly easy words. I'm sure there are several more
songs with "Shabnam"... will post them if can recall later...

Sorry, if I spoilt the fun of looking for "Shabnam" songs,
but I could not resist the opportunity for an ISB advertisement.
Anyway, I'm sure there are more songs out there...
And in case that is not enough, we can always start another

Great job, Navin. Couple of additions, both, as it turns out,
Sahir/Ravi/Mahendra Kapoor combinations.
Song: Neele gagan ke tale (Hamraaz)
SHABNAM ke moti, phoolon pe bikhare, donon ki aas phale
Song: Aapke pas jo ayega, pighal jayega (Kaajal)
aap ka husn wo SHABNAM hai jo sholon me pale
garm khushbuwon me tapte hue rangon me Dhale
(Was a clue in guri's Sahir RJGK. Full lyrics were posted by
ShashiKant recently, i.e., well after the RJGK).
I remember seeing something on shabnam in a recent posting on Gulzar
by Ashish. Something like
is bar ke sookhe saawan me shabnam na thi, na tha sholon ka dariya
Ashish, is it a film song?
Here is a nice stanza from a non-film poem of Sahir, Teri Aawaaz,
recently posted by Dr. Tewary:
tu mere paas na thi, phir bhee sahar hone tak
teraa har saans mere jism ko chhoo kar guzraa
qatraa qatraa tere deedar kee SHABNAM tapkee
lamhaa lamhaa teri qhusboo se muattar guzraa

I haven't heard this either. Does any RMIMer know anything about
it? It seems to be the only one with 'shabnam' in the mukhaDa, so far.

PS: Sami, the best (and the only worthwhile) song in the Naushad
film Dil Diya Dard Liya is the Rafi solo: Koi saaGhar dil ko
behalaataa nahi.n. Very good tune, superb rendering.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yeah right! And the only worthwhile song in Anarkali is "Mohabbat me aise
quadam Dagmagaae, zamaana ye samjha ke hume peeke aae, HIC! peeke aae.." :-)
(Actually, I adore this song, save for the hiccups. Lyrics are great.)

This is indeed a beautiful GHazal composed by Naushad Sahab and Rafi has done an
amazing job. One of the ashaar of this GHazal is my fav.:
Main koi pathhar nahin insaan hun
Kaise kehdun GHam se ghabraata nahin
I don't like the other two Rafi solos in this movie much, but the Lata solo is
in ab. gem! What a difficult but melodious tune! The *only* flaw is that Lata
doesn't sound as sweet as she usually does in Naushad tunes.
The Rafi/Asha duet "Saawan aae ya na aae..." isn't bad either.

Dead wrong, Sami and Ashok, about the DLDD song. The *only*
"worthwhile song" ... GHalat! The title song is also *very* good.
"koi saaGHar ..." is better, of course, and by that token, it's much
more than "only worthwhile." It's a heavenly song.

Right! And Rafi sounds much sweeter in this film (and in several
other Naushad films) ... take Mere Mehboob, for instance. Not many
songs of any MD (Naushad included) have been able to get out of Rafi
saheb the wonderful voice quality that's there in "ae husn zaraa jaag
tujhe ishq jagaaye." This song is one of those that I always advance
as a sterling example of the "jaadoo" that was there in Rafi Saheb's
voice. No one, but NO ONE, not a single other singer in the history
of films can attain that perfection of voice, IMO.

That's because it's a R.A.F.I-Asha duet, isn't it, Sami? :) :)
