After a stint in theatre, he was selected by the United Producers'
Talent Contest. He made his film debut in Chetan Anand's Aakhri Khat
(1966). His earlier films however did nothing for him till Aradhana
(1969) came along.
No rise or fall of a star has been as been quite as spectacular as that
of Rajesh Khanna. From 1969 to 1972, the Rajesh Khanna phenomenon swept
Bollywood off its feet and the hysteria he generated was unlike
anything seen before and after.
Aradhana was the beginning of the era of another great singer Kishore
Kumar. The Rajesh Khanna rage coupled with the complete sync of
Kishore's singing voice on Rajesh Khanna brought the first serious set
back in Rafi's career.
As Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar soared to super stardom towards the
early 1970s, Rafi's career began to spiral downwards. The careers of
many other superstars and singers got affected during the early '70s as
a result of the Kishore Kumar-Rajesh Khanna wave.
He went on to create a magic with 'Khamoshi' (1969), 'Kati Patang'
(1970), 'Aan Milo Sajna' (1970), 'Safar' (1970) and 'Sacha Jhootha'
(1970).

One superstitious reason cited for Rajesk Khanna's fall
was that he purchased Rajendra Kumar's house.
Apparently Rajendra Kumar started failing after he had aquired
the house. For those believing in superstitions - a cursed house.
