I must admit I was taken aback at the news of her death. If only because behind
the mystique she kept, she also appeared to be like her suitor Dev Anand, one
of those everlasting icons of Hindi Cinema.
I was also surprised to learn that she was 75 years of age. She surely must
have been older.
However, she was reportedly 19 years old when she met Dev Anand in 1948 for the
shooting of Vidya...so I guess it must be true.
"ye kaisii ajab daastaaN ho gayii hai" from Rustom Sohrab and "beqaraar hai
koyee" from Shama Parwana opposite Rafi are my personal favourites.
As Satishji would say...may her soul rest in everlasting peace.
Bhagwant
Kosh says that her first song is from Nai Duniya /42/ Naushad.
The song mentioned in the article maybe her second song. Those willing
to listen to her, it is available at
http://www.indianscreen.com/mp3/Sharda_1942-Suraiya-PanchiJa-DNMadhok_Naushad.mp3
The body is no more. The voice will live forever.

Thanks for the wonderful songs.
She is gone, but those sweet melodies will
be with us. May he sould rest in peace.

Her birtday was June 15, 1929.
All I can say is Bahut royenge ham tumhe yaad karke......

Which 'article'? Which second song?
For record, rediff.com's news carried, not surprisingly, an error.
Sharda was not a 1941 film. Suraiya made her singing debut in
Nai Duniya - 1942. Her first song 'boot karuu.N mai.n polish
baabuu' is/was available on the net.
Sharda (1942) was the second film in which she sang. If she
was born on 15 June 1929, she would be 12/13 when she
sang in Sharada and 74 when she died, not 75 as reported
by idiots in the media. There is no way a 12/13 year old can
have as strong and developed a voice as Suraiya had when
she sang 'Panchhii Jaa' in Sharada or 'karavaTe.n badal
rahaa hai aaj sab jahaa.N' an year later in Hamaarii Baat.
Her correct year of birth is more likely to be 1926/27, if
not 1925.

It is definitely possible for a 12/13 year old to have
a great developed voice. Just listen to songs of Master Madan
who died around the age of 13.

Master Madan's voice was not developed at all. He could
sing with higher pliability in his 'baal-aawaazii' than most others.
That is about all. To me, his greatness is a myth which owes
to his early and suspicious death. He might have developed
into a great singer, who knows; but then again, he might
not have. When you listen to MM's 'gori gori bainya', it is
obvious you are listening to a very young singer.

It is strange some of the songs she rendered proved true
in her own personal life .
1. Meri hogai unse baat , mai unki hun haan , wo mere hai haan
from film 1857
2. Kaise ye qaaide hai zamaane me pyar ke -
3. Hai ye judai ki chot buri hai - both from film Neeli
4. O saajan dekh is duniya se kya kya leke jaate hai - Do Sitare

Suraiya’s a memory, Dev Anand remembers
She was a great chapter in my life, says the evergreen hero the night
before her death
MUMBAI JANUARY 31: I first met Suraiya on the sets of a film called
Jeet. I think it was in the year 1948. She was a big star, a super
singer while I was a newcomer. I remember our first shot together. I was
playing the piano while she had to lean towards me and sing. We hit off
well and struck a good friendship.
Our story is quite an old story now. It’s history now but at the same
time it’s become a legend. I shared some great memories and moments with
her. Suraiya has been a great chapter in my life.
She was a very vibrant person and had beautiful and arresting eyes. She
was a very talented singer and a spontaneous actress. She was a star but
she never forgot that she was a human being first.
She was a huge Gregory Peck fan and used to tell me that I looked like him.
Once upon a time, we loved each other but we parted because her people
didn’t want to see us together. All those stories that she promised to
marry me and jilted me at the altar are mere stories. Nothing of that
sort ever happened. I did propose to her but I never got a response
though I know that she loved me as much as I loved her. She wasn’t bold
enough to act on that love and lacked the courage to come out in the
open. Once I realised this, I retreated my steps and never looked back.
I was emotionally torn but that usually happens when you are young and
in calf love. After it ended, we didn’t keep in touch. We used to bump
into each other at parties though and would meet like casual acquaintances.
I didn’t go and meet her in the hospital because that would boomerang.
The whole thing would have been highlighted and a round of fresh scandal
would have started.

Just learned of Suraiya's death after returning from some travels.
The first song of hers that comes to my mind is "...wo paas rahen yaa
duur rahen...", because that was the first film of hers which I saw
way back in 1949. What a simple but heart touching composition and
equally rendered. And similar was her "ye kaisii ajab daastaan ho
gayii hai....".
May God rest her soul in Peace.
Satish Kalra
PS: In an industry where the passing away of Anil Biswas did not
"merit" even a few lines in a magazine like Filmfare, what else can be
expected! No one there ever heard of "...do onto others that you
would expect them to do for you...".
Ok .. this does it ... just because she was an ancient singer doesn't
make Suraiyya good .. IMO she was a crappy, nasal singer. Thank God we
got Geeta Dutt and the Mangeshkar's to save us from her singing.
Am I the only one who thinks this group (RMIM) not only believes in
"Old is Gold" but also that "Every old piece of crap will be proven
Gold". Master Madan and Suraiyya being called good singers is an
example of this newsgroup's nasha. I was a sneaky bystander who was
bored to death at the RMIM-Meet when Master Madan's recordings were
played.. boring as hell! This by no means should be extended to my
general impressions of the Meet... which are largely positive!
Come on guys .. music is music .. don't fall in love with it because
it is old. This branding will only result in making an army of
music-Nazis, which is the last thing our community needs.

Madam,
Everybody had his or her distinct style of singing and they have got
different fans following.
I find it somewhat inappropriate that you are criticising her singing in such
words so soon after her demise.
Can't you wait for a few days more. After all you have already waited for forty

You should have walked out of the hall. AFAIR, there were other
people who were bored, and there were a few who legged it into the
wide expanse of the rest of Guri's house. What was it that kept
*you* from doing likewise?

Look who's branding! :)
You obviously think you are entitled to your opinion -- as do I,
and as, I'm sure, do most other RMIMers I know -- in nursing this
visceral dislike of Suraiya and Master Madan and whomever else
you dislike.
But then, you also assert that "music is music". So perhaps you'd
care to explain why those that love this "old crap" aren't entitled
to like what they like? So what if it is Suraiya and Master Madan?
So what if it's not what you like? *You* wouldn't perchance be
trying to become a music-Nazi, would you, now? ;)
-UVR.
Apparently she isn't the only one, since as you say below there were others too
who were bored with the Master Madan recordings and duly legged it for the great
open spaces. After all, any person who has been on here long enough, can see
that this group and of late: RMIM, its yahoo-group siblings(be they on RDB or SJ
or KK or...)and RMIM Meets are all an alchemist's dream come true.

If u listen to Geeta's early songs u will realise that she did have
Suraiyya's
influence on her singing.
Listen to "priit ka naata jo.Dne vaale" from Afsar, a duet by Geeta and
Suraiyya.

My guess is it is a troll. (Is that the right word for a
regular posting as a strainger?) One evidence is the way
the last name is spelt. A true-blood Bengali would insist
on spelling it Bhattacharyya.
So, it's a mongrel and you can try to guess the identity.
The first cut: is it a bitch or a he-dog?

One definition of a troll:
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?TrollDefinition
Usage of the word is various. In some usage, a troll is a communication
such as a usenet post, and a troller is the author of such
communication. In media where communication isn't discrete, a troll is
the creator of such communication.
A troll is deliberately crafted to provoke others with the intention of
wasting their time and energy. A troll is a time thief. To troll is to
steal from people. That is what makes trolling heinous.
Trolls can be identified by their disengagement from a conversation or
argument. They do not believe what they say, but merely say it for effect.
Trolls are motivated by a desire for attention by people and can't or
won't acquire it in a productive manner.
Someone may be insufferable, infuriating, fanatical, and an ignorant
idiot to boot without being a troll.
Also note that a troll isn't necessarily insulting, snide, or even
impolite. Only the crudest, most obvious, forms of trolling can be
identified so easily.
If you find yourself patiently explaining, at length and in great
detail, some obscure point to someone who isn't even being polite to
you, then you are probably being trolled.

The current thread is in the nature of a tribute in memorium.
Discussion, dissension, aspersions, and vituperation belong elsewhere.
Her appeal was based on her soulful songs and sensitive portrayals.
The mystique of her personal life adds another dimension and a legend
emerges.
That India around 1950 adored her as the uncrowned queen of filmdom
is an accomplished fact. The dissatisfacion here is with the
proverbially short public memory and its disloyalty.
Peace?
Arun

Really?
I guess some people like say,
Prof. Ashish K. Bhattacharyya [Finance and Control] &
Prof. Hrishikes Bhattacharyya [Finance and Control]
might spell their name the way you indicate. But are you saying others like say,
Prof. Mallicka Bhattacharya (Visiting) [Sociology] &
Prof. Subir Bhattacharya [Management Information Systems]
are not true-blooded Bengalis? The next time you take a walk around the campus,
and happen to bump into these people, do stab them with a knife to ascertain who
amongst them is a true-blooded Bengali.
If you would rather postpone it till you are back in Bangalore, please see if
Prof. B K Bhattacharya/[Area : Public Policy] would be willing to be the human
pin-cushion. I am sure by now you know who these people are.
>So, it's a mongrel and you can try to guess the identity.

Does it make a difference? In the past many such unidentifiable "mongrels" have
made their appearance on RMIM. Not one soul has protested their lack of/or fake
identity when they made favourable comments or asked nice questions on
"golden-era" musicians/singers. Infact people have tripped over themselves to
provide, lyrics, identify songs, fill in P-stats. I am quite certain that no one
would have bothered to question this person's identity, had praises been sung
for Suraiya or Master Madan, instead of the brickbats that have been hurled at
them.
Infact they would have been given life-membership in the "Mafia". Given the
amount of empty hand-waving here, I think the "Mafia" would make better traffic
policemen.

Not true.
One can praise or criticise Suraiya without rambling about
his/her experiences at rmim meet. This 'Devika' character
talked about rmim meet just to create an impression that
he/she had seen protagonists at first hand and somehow
derived authority thereby to pass comments on them and
their opinions.
If at all that 'Devika' attended any meet he/she must have
spent most of the time with Ketan and imbibed lot of his
stupidity. But Ketan at least signs his own name. That he
is supporting trolling by 'Devika' is partly in character and
partly due to Ketan and Ketan alone buying Rawat's tirades
against an imagined Mafia.
I am inclined to be more liberal than Shri Arun Gupta and
accept a politely voiced criticism of Suraiya even immediately
after her death, and even in a thread dedicated to her memory.
But there is a way of voicing disagreement in an obituary
thread. Mongrels don't accept any such norms and 'Ketan-s'
don't understand the issues at stake. Suraiya was a very
dignified person. We owe better behaviour to her memory.
