I thought nettors might like to try this quiz, which I had compiled
for today's issue of Dubai's Friday magazine. There are several no-
brainers and a few toughies. I'm particularly interested in seeing
your answers to Qs 13 and 20.

Since it's just for fun, feel free to tap all references. You may post
your answers on the newsgroup (maybe with with spoiler space).

I will post the answers next week.

Regards

Shekhar

Okay, I'm sure the veterans on RMIM and RAMLI will get 100%, but here

Tinku Tagore, Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan. Tinku, as a child

Manna De and KK?

I was inclined to include Lata and/or Asha, but I'm guessing it should
be a male singer since the question refers to 'actors'.

Ads for Lux soap?

They had six fingers on one hand?

I was tempted to write Rafi/Shamshad's 'laa de balma mohe aasmani
churiya' from 'Rail ka Dibba', 'cos it also had a fairly long stretch
on a single note. But it wasn't the first line of the song and the
song by no means is a classic. The answer is probably a very common
song that I can't pin down!

Chitrangada(1954)? I believe Rabindranath Tagore also directed a movie
called 'Natir Puja' in the early 30s but I'm not sure if it had
dialogue or was a silent movie.

Close, but no cigar! The Q asked for a screenplay credit, not story.

Lata is a sure answer. She has sung for Shobhana Samarth, Tanuja and
Kajol. Trivia: In one of her live shows, Lata refers to this fact. Not
to be left behind, in one of *her* shows, Asha referred to the fact
that she has sung for "betii, maa.N aur mausii", referring to Kajol,
Tanuja and Nutan! Makes me think Asha probably didn't sing for
Shobhana S. Could she have sung for some other 3-generation set?

Among males, the only 3-gen sets I can think or are from the Kapoor
clan. Rafi has sung for Raj and Rishi Kapoor. Has he sung for
Prithviraj Kapoor?

Any idea which song Lata sang for Shobhana Samarth? AFAIR, in an
interview Lata remarked she didn't know or remember if she sang for
SS, and not that she did. My contenders have examples to back
them :-)
Hint: in case of both contenders, the song for one 'generation member'
is not in Hindi; and both contenders sang for that person in the same
(non-Hindi) film.
Second hint: Surjit Singh and Gurcharan Sandhu are both disqualified
from answering this one...

My comparing a list of SS movies and Lata's Hindi output, I have
narrowed down the choice to

Narsingh Avatar (49), Hamari Beti (50), Keechak Vadh (59)

(Note: There are three more, but I have those movies and I know that
Lata did not sing for her.)

Because of the age factor, my guess is, if at all, it would be Narsingh
Avatar (49) or afilm from another language.

BTW there is overlap beteen Asha and her too in early movies.

I think unless there is conclusive evidence that Lata did sing for SS
in any of the movies you mention, she would not be in the running for
the 3 gen singer slot.

Nutan was not allowed at the premier of her movie Nagina because the
movie was for adults only and Nutan was underage at the time.

A disclaimer: There is a lot of discussion about a movie called
Narsingh Avtaar. I hereby declare that the movie has nothing to do

Right! The first two are well known. Kunwara Baap had Mehmood star
alongside his father Mumtaz Ali and two sons; 36 CL had Geoffrey

I believe Lata Ji's sung for Shobhna Samarth in some mythological/
historical in late 40s.. One of the reference is Narsinh Avtaar (1949)
(Music Director : Vasant Desai), Where Shobhna Samart was leading lady
and Lata ji had four songs.. but since I haven't seen the film I am
not very sure if any of Lata ji's songs was picturised on Shobhna ji
(as few of the songs were by Lalita Deulkar).. another film was Hamari
Beti but it could have all the Lata songs on Nutan not Shobhna ji..

As for Kishore Kumar, I am 100% Sure and its a quiz for all. I had
asked the same question on another forum last year with no answers....
Will post the answer on Monday evening, in case we don't have
answers..

Unless somebody provides reasonable proof that she actually did sing for

Really? I must have missed that one. Not that I know the answer
straight OTOMH. Has anyone mentioned Kal Aaj Aur Kal though I am not
sure if KK lends his voice to RK and PRK in the movie? Or could it be
Dev Anand - Sunil Anand (Anand Aur Anand)? I am not sure who Dev
Anand's father is and if KK sang a Punjabi song for him (a hint by
OP)? Sunil/Sanjay Dutt could also possibly be a candidate (Padosan-
Rocky), but I don't see Sunil Dutt's father (who spent his life in a
village and died early) as a film personality.

I would say Lata and Asha. I assume that we can look at Bina Rai
(Premnath's wife, and thereby an extended part of the Kapoor clan),
Babita/Neetu Singh, and Karishma/Kareena as three generations, right?
Surely both Lata and Asha have sung for each of them!

Warm regards,

Going solely by the clues, the film seems to be 'Nanak Naam Jahaaz
hai' -Prithviraj K's only(?) punjabi film. The imdb entry mentions
Manna, Rafi & Mahendra Kapoor as the singers for the film. I can't
recall any song by Manna Dey picturised on Rishi (could be one of
those multi-starrers , multi-singer LP songs from the 70s) or any
instance of Mahendra Kapoor singing for Raj Kapoor or for Shashi
Kapoor's sons, for that matter. But if Rafi & Manna did sing for
Prithviraj in NNJH, they seem to be your contenders.
As for Lagaan being the first Hindi synch-sound film in the post-
dubbing era, I know of at least two Hindi films which had synchronised
sound dialogues -Mrinal Sen's Genesis & Ek Din Achanak. In fact there
is even a documentary on Mrinal Sen with extensive footage from the
sets of EDA.

Much was made of Lagaan being the first to revert to synch-sound, by
Ashutosh G and co before the film's release.

An excellent catch, quite amazing. So Kishore joins my two
contenders...! Vibhendu has all but cracked it as far as Rafi goes,
but I'll wait for a day or so to see if anyone can come up with 3-gen
instances for Manna Dey before I post the answer.

Sorry to follow up on my own post but (red-faced) I realized I meant
to ask what Teen Deviyan had in common with Do Anjaane, NOT Mr.
Natwarlal... Sorry guys, but give it a go now anyway.

I'm posting all answers by Thursday morning.

I think you mean Do Anjaane, not Mr.Natwarlal. The lead pair have
their real-life names in the film. AB is Amit Roy and Rekha is Rekha
Roy. In Teen Devian, Dev Anand is Devdutt Anand, Nanda is Nanda, Smi
is Simi, Kalpana is Kalpana and I S Johar is I S Johar!

They have all starred in films named after themselves (Madhubala can
be added to the list). Incidentally, Sunny Deol is unique in the sense
that he's starred in films named after both his real and screen names
(Sunny and Ajay).

1. Alka Yagnik, first sang a few lines for Rajshri's Payal Ki Jhankar,
released in 1979. She recorded her first full-fledged number for
Hamari Bahu Alka a little later, though the film was released in 1982
and was preceded by Laawaris (her first solo and her first release),
Itni si baat, Yeh Rishta na Tootay, Sannata, Jeevan Dhaara and a few
other films. So take your pick - my vote would be Hamari Bahu Alka.

contenders here.

Just for the record, here are the answers, though RMIMers cracked
them all.

1. In which film did Alka Yagnik first sing as a playback singer?

Hamari Bahu Alka.

2. The main credits for Hrishikesh Mukerjee's film "Bawarchi" were
there, but nobody saw them. How come?

They were read aloud by Amitabh Bachchan.

3. What does the Dev Anand film "Teen Deviyan" have in common with

the Amitabh Bachchan film "Do Anjaane"?

In both films the principal characters on screen had the same names as
the actors who played them.

4. Which Hindi film star was once a state tennis champion for
Maharashtra?

Aamir Khan.

5. Who are the two Hindi film actresses to have appeared on the cover
of Time magazine's Asian edition?

Parveen Babi (June 28 1976) and Aishwarya Rai (October 27 2003).

6. In 1951 Nutan was not allowed to enter the auditorium for the
premiere of her own film "Nagina" - why?

The film was awarded an 'A' (adults only) rating by the censors, and
she was underage (she was 15 then).

7. Deep Roy, a Nairobi-born actor of Indian descent, holds the
distinction of playing 165 roles in a single film - which one? (Hint:
It's a Hollywood film.)

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), in which he plays all the
165 Oompa Loompas.

8. Who is the well-known/notorious (depending on your point of view)
nephew of veteran actress Zora Sehgal?

Salman Rushdie.

9. Who co-owns the production houses Dreams Unl and Red Chillies
Entertainment?

Shah Rukh Khan.

10. What do Nargis, Johnny Walker, and Dara Singh have in common?
Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon and Vyjayantimala almost qualify for that
commonality, too!

They starred in movies bearing precisely their respective names as
titles. Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon were in movies that had only
their first names as titles, and the best Vyjayantimala could do was a
film called Miss Mala. I.S. Johar and Mehmood starred in several
'Johar-Mehmood in - ' movies but the titles were not restricted to
their names.

11. Which three actresses trace their lineage to Rabindranath
Tagore's family?

The ones I could find were Sharmila Tagore, Devika Rani (grandniece)
and Meena Kumari (her grandmother Sundari Thakur - or Tagore - was
married into the Tagore family). I guess Soha could be included too.

12. What do the films "Aawara", "Kal, Aaj Aur Kal", "Kunwara Baap"
and "36 Chowringhee Lane" have in common?

Each features three generations of actors: "Aawara" had Raj Kapoor,
his father Prithviraj Kapoor, and his father Dewan Basheswarnath
Kapoor; "Kal Aaj Aur Kal" had Raj's son Randhir Kapoor along with Raj
and Prithviraj; "Kunwara Baap" featured comedian Mehmood along with
his father Mumtaz Ali (a dancing star of the '30s) and son Maikky; and
"36 Chowringee Lane" had Jennifer Kapoor (née Kendall) with father
Geoffrey Kendall (playing her older brother), and daughter Sanjana
Kapoor.

13. Which playback singer has sung for three generations of actors?
(Two contenders)

Two contenders - before Pavan came up with Kishore Kumar, that is -
were Manna Dey and Rafi. Both sang for Prithviraj Kapoor in the
Punjabi film "Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai", and for Raj in several films
each. Manna sang "Ye birha ki aag kaisi" for Randhir in "Ponga Pandit"
and Rafi for several Rishi Kapoor films, notably "Sargam". The Lata-
Shobhana Samarth link remains unproven.

14. What connects a series of actresses, from Leela Chitnis in the
'30s to Aishwarya Rai in the present day and encompassing every major
actress in between?

They have all modeled for Lux Soap.

15. Which was Amitabh Bachchan's only black-and-white movie?

I thought it was only "Saat Hindustani" until "Bhuvan Shome' was
added...

16. British philosopher/mathematician Bertrand Russell is to Rajendra

Kumar, as legendary West Indian cricketer Frank Worrell is to whom?

Mehmood monkeys around with FW in "Around the World" - don't recall if
Om Prakash shared screen space in the same scene.

17. If Yusuf Khan became Dilip Kumar, who did A.S. Dileep Kumar
become?

A.R. Rahman

18. A far out link: what connects the debut movie of the actress born
Begum Mahjabeen Bux, and the ghoulish killer of the Hollywood movie
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"?

The name Leatherface.

19. What anatomical peculiarity does Hrithik Roshan share with Anne
Boleyn, Gary Sobers, and Ernest Hemingway?

An extra finger (polydactyly).

20. Which popular (and now classic) Hindi film song's first 32
syllables are all tuned to the same single note?

Ina Mina Dika

21. Which was the only Filmfare Award won by the cult film "Sholay"?

Best Editing, for M.S. Shinde.

22. Lata Mangeshkar offered to train her when she won on the
nationally telecast "Meri Aawaz Suno" in 1996. Microsoft has now hired
her to sing its Windows Vista song "Wow is Now". Who is she?

Sunidhi Chauhan - Kalraji got this one.

23. What does Palash Sen (actor and member of the rock band Euphoria)
share in common with musician L. Subramaniam (husband of Kavita
Krishnamurthy)?

They are medical doctors.

24. British director David Lean wanted which Indian actor for
"Lawrence of Arabia", for the role that eventually went to Omar
Sharif?

Dilip Kumar.

25. Which is Saif Ali Khan's only film in English to date?

Being Cyrus.

26. For almost 30 years the dialogue in Indian films has been dubbed
(re-spoken for recording) in the studio, in post-production. Which
landmark 2001 film was the first to return to synchronized sound?

Lagaan.

27. Which is the only Indian film to list a Nobel Prize winner as
screenplay writer in its credits?

Pearl S. Buck for the English version of "Guide". She lent her name as
a favour to Dev Anand though she did no real scripting work, nor knew
anything of the story. In his memoir My Days writer R.K. Narayan -
justifiably sore - recounts the party that followed the U.K. premiere.
Lord Mountbatten, who did not see the film, asked Ms Buck to brief him
on the story; while she looked desperately towards Narayan to bail him
out, but he didn't, just walked away.

28. Which Hindi movie's filming locations include Disneyland Park;
the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt; Grand Arches, Utah; the Grand Canyon; the
Great Wall of China; Las Vegas; the Leaning Tower of Pisa; Los
Angeles; New York City; the Taj Mahal, Agra; the Colosseum, Rome; the
Eiffel Tower, Paris; and the Universal Studios Theme Park, Universal
City, California?

Jeans.

29. Which was the first Hindi film to be shot in CinemaScope, the
first widescreen process?

Kaagaz Ke Phool. The first one in colour was Pyar Ki Pyaas.

30. Which Indian has played a leading role in the most films?

Prem Nazir, (1926-1989) still holds the record, having notched up
around 600 films in a career stretching from 1952 until his death. As
Surjit Singh would say, that's SOME Malayali.

I hope you all enjoyed the Qs.

If by principal characters you mean Amitabh and Rekha then yes, they do retain
their original names--Amit Roy and Rekha Roy. However for Do Anjaane, I would
say Prem Chopra(Ronjit Mullick) is also a principal character. He is the one who
lures Rekha into movies. There is another difference but I am not 100% sure of
this. In Teen Deviyan, the principal characters are only known by their first
names--Dev, Nanda, Simi, Kalpana, whereas in Do Anjaane, the last names have
been mentioned too.

I find this odd. Firstly this is RK Narayan's version of events and he was
particularly mad at the scriptwriter(s) who he accused of making a hash of his
book, who in this case were Dev Anand & Pearl S Buck(for the English version).
Now rather than say anything against a Noble laureate, RK Narayan might find it
easier to dump all the blame on Dev Anand and absolving Pearl S Buck for any
crimes she might have committed on his book.

Secondly this link seems to point to Pearl Buck as a writer for the play
adaptation of the novel.

http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/pearlbuc.htm

Lastly, the original review of the English version of Guide(posting below) also
mentions Pearl S Buck as a screenwriter. Would the NYT get it wrong?

Pearl Buck Is Adapter of Scenic 'Guide'
Print Save By BOSLEY CROWTHER
Published: February 10, 1965

IT is too bad the narrative elements in the India-located film "The Guide" are
not up to the quality of the staging and the color photography. For Tad
Danielewski, who directed and collaborated with Pearl S. Buck on the script,
which is based on a novel by R. K. Narayen, has done exceedingly well in
projecting the look of modern India and its conglomerate atmosphere.

With a camera that seems to be impatient to make it an outright travelogue, so
lovingly does it linger on invitingly photogenic scenes, the American
producer-director runs off a succession of colorful views of sightseeing spots,
busy cities, temples, dusty landscapes and crowds.

Crowds, especially. There must be literally thousands of people seen at various
times in this film, which had its world premiere showing at the Lincoln Art
Theater last night. Swarms of white-clothed, brown-skinned people hurry through
the streets of the handsome and otherwise cities that are provokingly
unidentified.

Other swarms squat in massive clusters to watch Hindu dances performed by the
beautiful Waheeda Rehman, who plays the unstable heroine. And even more pile in
vast phalanxes around the handsome hero, Dev Anand, as he takes on the awesome
reputation of a mahatma, a spiritual leader, towards the end.

But somehow these mobs of people and, indeed, the whole atmospheric scene that
is the geographical backdrop seem to be for and in another film than the one for
which Mr. Danielewski and Miss Buck have written the script. And particularly do
they seem remote from the gaudy English-speaking characters and the make-believe
of their unconvincing romance that is performed by Miss Rehman and Mr. Anand.

Whereas the backdrop is authentic, the romance of a provincial Indian tourist
guide with the dancing-girl-wife of an older merchant seems partly artificial
and contrived, much more in the Hollywood spirit than in that of, let us say,
Bombay. And the development of the narrative continuity is so erratic and
frequently slurred—so clumsy and artless, to be plain-spoken—that both story and
emotion are vague.

The toughest to follow is the build-up of an irony towards the end, after the
guide has been jilted by the dancer (whom he has breezily stolen from her
spouse) and has crept away into the country, presumably to die. Here he is taken
by the people to have supernatural powers, and is put in the pitiful position of
having to perform miracles in a time of drought.

This strangely mawkish transition would be hard enough to put across even with
expert acting of a most sensitive script. Neither of these advantages is evident
in this film. The script is sluggish and uncertain, and Mr. Anand, who seems
throughout to be modeling his style of acting on one of the more romantic
Hollywood stars, bouncing about in boyish fashion and wearing his hat on the
back of his pompadoured hair, is stumped by the staggering requirement of acting
the weird, ironic twist. He leaves us feeling that we, as well as the people of
this poverty-stricken area, have ben hoaxed.

Miss Rehman, too, is unable to fulfill the nature of her role, which is that of
a flighty little creature with no talent save to dance and make love. Miss
Rehman, beautiful and stately, is aptly decorative and poised, but she is no
more the Rosie of the context than she is a libidinous Peter Pan. Kishore Sahu
as her husband is a cuckold right out of stock, and Leela Chitnis as the hero's
mother is as theatrical as all the others in the cast.

Yes, it's too bad "The Guide" does not escort us to anything like as clear a
view of a problem of Indian people as it gives us of Indian scenes.

Hmm...apologies if anyone else picked this up already, as this has
been a long thread and I may have missed it. "Eena Meena Deeka"
definitely works, but for some reason the song that came to mind for
me was another KK number, "Tu Ne Abhi Dekha Nahin" from "Do Aur Do
Paanch". In fact, here the number is *exactly* 32. Since "classic" is
a subjective term (this song is certainly no classic in my book, but I
know others who would not agree), not sure there is *one* right answer
to this.

I don't have the song with me right now, so apologies if I am wrong,
but isn't the initial "are" in the "are tUne abhii dekhaa nahii.n ..."
an octave higher? Otherwise I agree, it fits the bill better than
"iinaa miiinaa Diikaa"

Also, Benaam has its main characters using their real names. Ergo,
Amitabh become Amit Shrivastav, Satyendra Kapoor (Satyen Kapoo),
Iftekhar (Iftekhar) etc.

Benaam fits the bill more correctly, since Amitabh's real last name is
Srivastava. Hasn't he used that in some other film, too?

Tinku Tagore, the name I had mentioned as one of the answers to this
question, is the elder sibling of Sharmila. She acted only as a child
artiste, and AFAIK in only one movie - Tapan Sinha's Kabuliwala in
Bengali. IIRC, she expired in the 1980-s.

Related question: If Sundari Tagore was MeenaK's grandmother, then
wouldn't one of MeenaK's parents belong to the Tagore family?

Finally, thanks for the great quiz. Would love to see more coming.

Thanks not only for posting the enjoyable quiz, but also for
religiously following up on the responses, and then providing the
final list of answers in a timely manner. Aamir Khan, the tennis
player, was a revelation for me. On a related note, I heard that
Shobha Khote was a cycling champ. She was shown cycling quite a bit in
Didi. Was that her debut movie?

She does. I was not aware of this movie when I did the quiz and
thought it not fair to include it among my answers as they already
stood.

See Pavan's note on this thread:

The family : Mumtaz Ali -> Mehmood -> Lucky Ali

==> Mumtaz Ali featured in Baiyyan Chhod Balam from Rangeeli (1952)..
Kishore da singing in both male and female voices (for mumtaz ali and
Yaakoob) for the first time (much earlier to Half Ticket.. another
Quiz.. can you name other instances where Kishore da sung in both
male
and female voices in the same song?)

=> Mehmood - So many songs... my favs from Bhoot Bangla, Laakhon Me
Ek, Kunwara Baap..

=> Lucky Ali - Dilruba aa meri baahon me aa - Yehi Hai Zindagi (1978)

As I said earlier, I was going purely by Aamir Khan's and A
Gowarikar's pre-release claims.

Ketan, the thing is even Crowther seems to be going by Pearl Buck's
being officially credited as screenwriter. The 'My Days' anecdote
should be authentic because it's unlikely that RKN would invent it,
when you consider that several people present at that party were still
around when the memoir was published. I can't find any anecdote by Ms
Buck herself commenting on her experiences as screenwriter for
'Guide'.

Anyway thanks for posting the NYT review, and the different
perspective it puts on what is one of our most-loved films. I don't
know why Dev simply didn't ask Goldie to direct the English version as
well.

Thanks Sami.

Regarding Shobha Khote's debut, I think it might have been 'Seema'.

In which she *is* shown pedalling away furiously for a longish
stretch, so I assume Sami meant 'Seema' too! :)
Let me add my thanks and applause for the quiz, Shekhar - a very
enjoyable one indeed!

The most seamless being 3 words "Ek Haath Se" in the song "Ghar Ki
Raunak Hai Gharwaali" from the film "Bandi" ( the line which appears
at the end of the song )

Suniye Suniye Aaj Kal Ki - Ladka Ladki

and many others....

But English version was made first ! Dev went to America and called
RKNarayan from there to take his permission and before returning to
India finalized the complete film and other things with the people out
there

"aake siidhii lake dil pe jaise kaTariyaa" also fits the requirement.

I recently heard Sonu Nigam sing this song. In terms of making both
the male and 'female' voices believable, I think he does a much better
job than the original!

Warm regards,
Abhay
