Sami :
...interesting quiz
Vandana :
I missed...
1. daal di maine... devata tum ho meraa saharaa
2. aTak aTak jhaT ghaT panGhaT par...are jaare haT naTkhaT
I just love this song...
3. ho, tamannaa luT ga_ii phir bhii tere dam se mohabbat hai..naa milataa
4. premii huu.N paagal huu.N mai.n... parvato.n se aaj mai.n Takaraa gayaa
Nothing great about last song..but can add variety since this is by Shabbir
kumar...
QM==>
Sorry, none of these featured even in our initial 100+ list. Only the last
would be out of place in our quiz. The others, well, haven't we had enough of
Lata in the last 2 RJGKs?
Prithvi:
I have thoroughly enjoyed solving this edition of the RJGK. I think preludes
are somewhat difficult to crack than regular line-from-the-middle clues. That's
because a line-from-middle helps guessing the metre/taal of the song or
sometimes gives a keyword at the end....and also I tend to remember lines of
song proper more than the prelude.
Anyways, the quiz was very exciting to solve and I appreciate the hard work
that has gone behind designing a quiz that's well balanced in all aspects.
Shalini :
Thanks for putting together a very entertaining and enjoyable quiz.
Pavan :
Congratulations for a good quiz on an innovative theme.... Never cared for the
preludes during listening... At the first instance I thought the quiz would be
full of songs with usual prelude situations like Qawwalis, Bhajans, Song
Competetions, or some Deshbhakti se ot-prot song... Your song selection proved
it wrong...
..... Hope to see [some] more innovative themes in the future
..... Overall I found the quiz this time to be a slightly tough one.
Tabassum :
Congrats for conducting a quiz on such interesting topic. I was very excited
to see the quiz on preludes. It was more difficult than I expected, I know
guessing song from prelude is anyway difficult but you could have made it little
easier by providing p-stats or hints. In many clues no hint to MD or film name
made it very tough. Inspite of the difficulty level I enjoyed the quiz and liked
the song selection.
Aashish :
GREAT job!!! I had a great time trying it!!!
Your quiz took me down memory lane and then some.....Been a long time since I
heard some of the songs you have come up with!! Felt really good hearing them
again!!! From my analysis, I think the quiz is excellent....altho this is only
my second RJGK quiz. My approach towards most of the quiz questions was to try
to "hum" the tune....if that worked, guessing the song was easy. I must say, it
doesnt work that well hehe and so I had to read clues really well for some and
for 6 of them, well, nothing helpd me!! I must say, scores aside, this quiz was
tons of fun!! I spent only 3 days on it....I wish I had more time so I could do
more justice to your efforts!!!
Srinvas :
Thanks for a very enjoyable quiz. After seeing that SDB got more songs than
other MD's I decided to solve the quiz at the earliest oppurtunity. Of course
Lata also had max songs among singers, but that was anticipated:) I liked your
attempts to confuse participants. In song. no 5, you guys didn't give Sailesh's
name in MD's.Similarly for Sohni Mahiwaal Naushad's name wasn't counted. The
toughest clues happenned to be no.8,14, & surprisingly 35.
QM==>
Omission of Sailesh' name was an oversight. Our first instinct was to have
only the Saigal song. It was only at the last moment that we decided to include
both songs with the same prelude. Unfortunately, we did not update the p-stats
section for that. We did indicate that we had two songs by Naushad - Sohni
Mahiwal & Shabab.
Sudhir :
Thanks for compiling a very interesting and informative Quiz.
Surajit :
I used to wonder why the RJGK guidelines specified "no preludes". After this
quiz, I no longer wonder 8-) very tough quiz.
...the clues I cracked, I cracked right away because I knew the lyrics. The
ones I didn't know, I didn't get. The subclues didn't seem to help at all. The
song we really miss is: "ishq waalo.n se na puuchho ke unaki raat kaa aalam
tanahaa kaise guzarataa hai", etc.
..and later..
I'm convinced there's a Muqaddar ka Sikandar song somewhere in the quiz)
QM==>
Well, now you know better
Arunabha :
Thanks for an interesting quiz. I found it hard to nail many a song (without
references to clues and net resources, that is ) ecause the opening words do not
register as strongly as the first lines of the mukha.Daa. Then there are songs
where the prelude sher does not fetaure in the song recording - e.g. "jaane kyaa
tuune kahii" and "guzaraa huwaa zamaanaa". Then there are a few songs like
"aayegaa aanewaalaa " where the prelude even surpasses the song that follows.
On a different note, the Madhubala agenda is patently clear, right from the
introduction itself. :-)
QM==>
We were bracing ourselves for an onslaught against the number of Lata songs,
but this is the first time anyone on RMIM has complained about Madhubala! BTW,
that is an entirely unexpected and unintended side effect of this RJGK.
===============================================================================
1. akele akele kahaan jaa rahe ho
hame saath le lo, jahaan jaa rahe ho
From Naushad to Shankar-Jaikishan is no great distance, except if you ask Sami.
From Lata to Rafi is even lesser of a choice, many would say. But Nimmi is a
long way from Shammi Kapoor by any count. A wonderful declaration of undying
love and faithfulness, this 1959 song is one of several great tunes from a
romantic tragedy along the Romeo-Juliet lines.
Song : tumhaare sa.ng mai.n bhii chaluu.Ngii
jaise pata.ng piichhe Dor
Singer(s) : Lata
Film : Sohni Mahiwal (1959)
MD : Naushad
Lyrics : Shakeel
Response : 8/13
Comments :
Sudhir : Per my info., Bharat Bhushan was the hero (The Punjabi word: Mahiwal
means: a person who is looking after the herd of 'Mujh' - the female black
buffalo). Don't know why Shammi Kapoor was mentioned
QM==>
Rafi-SJ-Shammi Kapoor are the names associated with the "other" song
Lata-Naushad-Nimmi with the song in question here...
VS Rawat : I think this is mukhda itself - An evening in Paris - Hasrat
QM==>
he! he! he! fell for it
Aashish :
Didnt know there was a Naushad version of this one!!! Bowled me over!!!!
Surajit :
I know this song featured in Guri's quiz in the RMIM meet on the west coast
last year....but I can't remember the song.
QM==>
And both of us missed the quiz! Hrishi was away at the airport to pick up
Vijay - apparently the most talked about event of the meet
2. khoii-khoii aa.Nkh hai, jhukii~~ palak hai
jahaan jahaan dekhega tuu~~, vahiin jhalak hai
khoii-khoii~~~~
The essential message of the song is an age old one of introspection - a
question of finding God within oneself. But the lyrics, the singing and the
context in the film give a subtle twist and convey a message about the
whereabouts of a missing person and where to search. Another of Manna De's
semi-classical songs, this time under S D Burman's baton.
Song : tere nainaa talaash kare jise
Singer(s) : Manna De
Film : Talash
MD : S D Burman
Lyrics :
Response : 10/13
Comments :
3. phir na kiije meri gustakh-nigaahi ka gila
dekhiye aapane phir pyaar se dekha mujhako
The heroine walks on ahead, softly humming these lines to herself. The hero,
intrigued, walks behind her. He catches up with her..
- suniye she stops in her tracks - mai.n ne kahaa.. she turns around looks at
him, and breaks into this highly popular Geeta
Dutt song. The lyricist is Sahir, and he foreshadows his Asha-Mukesh song of a
few years later with this prelude.
Song : jaane kyaa tuune kahii
Singer(s) : Geeta Dutt
Film : Pyasa
MD : S D Burman
Lyrics : Sahir Ludhianvi
Response : 9/13
Comments :
Prithvi: This was an interesting question. I think the prelude does not feature
in the various CD/CS releases of the song. I happpen to have purchased only one
feature film on DVD and that happens to be Pyaasa...and I watched it umpteem
number of times...so this just happened to be easy :)
Aashish :
Ahh Mukesh is one of my favorite singers...when I was a kid, my dad used to
constantly play Mukesh's songs and also record his own voice singing Mukesh's
songs. Plus my uncle's (Dad had two brothers) were crazy about old songs as well
and they all grew up with a lot of challenges and what better singer than Mukesh
with his deep, sad voice to reflect it ...and hence I was constantly fed
Mukesh songs...and I have loved every moment of it!!!
QM==>
One more to the Preeti-Snehal club. Sorry Aashish, this was the Geeta Dutt
song we were talking about. How could you say Mukesh after the sub-clue
explicitly mentions Geeta?!
Balaji-Malini : Here the clues helped immensely, the verbal exchange as well as
the pstats.
QM==>
Deliberately, because the song does not appear as a prelude on any of the
standard releases. We thought the "mai.n ne kahaa" leading on to "jaane kyaa
tuune kahii" was a deft touch.
4. pothii pa.Dh pa.Dh jag muaa paNDit bhayaa na koy
Dhaa_ii a{kshh}ar prem kaa, pa.Dhe so paNDit hoy
It is an old trick to include a popular line from the old masters in the lyrics
of a film song. If Sahir makes free use of Khusro in his Barsat Ki Raat qawwali,
Gulzar is a pastmaster at drawing from Ghalib and Bulle Shah... Here, it is Fauq
Jami's penmanship at work and Yesudas' impeccable singing from a soundtrack
studded with wonderful songs, many of them Yesudas solos. The song is an
admission of love, and a lamentation of unrequited love at the same time.
Another song from the film is an excellent candidate for inclusion in this quiz,
but the appeal of Kabir's verse won out.
Song : terii tasaviir ko siine se lagaa rakhaa hai
Singer(s) : Yesudas
Film : Sawan Ko Aane Do
MD : Rajkamal
Lyrics : Fauq Jami
Response : 8/13
Comments :
5. dil ke phaphole jal uThe siine ke daag se
is ghar ko aag lag gayii, ghar ke chiraag se
Given a popular line like this, it is no surprise to find two songs that share
this prelude. One is sung by the Emperor and the other by the reigning
queen-bee. One has music by the redoubtable RC Boral and the other by the
unheralded Shailesh.
The Lata song has lyrics more closely following the opening prelude, but it is
the Saigal song that is more widely known. Saigal sings this bhajan in typical
open-throated fashion. It is as if he is walking along a long road, with only
the Lord for company. The first stanza is agonizing, and the second is little
short of outright lamentation.
Identify either song.
Song : a.Ndhe kii laaThii tuu hii hai / jal ke dil khaaq huaa
Singer(s) : Saigal / Lata Mangeshkar
Film : Dhoopchhaon / Parichay
MD : R C Boral / Sailesh
Lyrics : Pt. Sudarshan
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Prithvi : Srinivas who is a Lata-bhakt got the obscure Lata song which I never
heard. The Saigal song is a personal favorite of mine...thanks for including it.
6. phirate the jo ba.De hi sikandar bane hue
baiThe hain unake dar pe kabuutar bane hue
Sahir's words border on the burlesque, but this film boasts of some of his best
songs - ever. The soundtrack is dominated by Mukesh, but here, Mukesh takes a
back seat to Rafi's ribbing. The two consider the pros and cons of falling in
love. While Rafi sees in it an end to their friendship, Mukesh wants to be left
alone with his paramour. Finally, the song ends with Raj Kapoor throwing a hail
of tones to drive his friend and tormentor away, so that he can share a loving
moment with Mala Sinha.
Song : jis pyaar me ye haal ho us pyaar ko tauba
Singer(s) : Rafi, Mukesh
Film : Phir Subah Hogi
MD : Khaiyyam
Lyrics : Sahir
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Surajit : What, you guys get some sort of perverse pleasure out of picking the
most obscure song on the soundtrack?
QM==>
As far as Phir Subah Hogi is concerned, there are NO obscure songs!
7. kabhii kaalii ratiyaa, kabhii din suhaane
kismat ki baate to kismat hii jaane
One may have many fantasies about what to do in life, but fate has ideas of its
own. That's the way the cookie crumbles. A desert-island quality sound track
that is dominated by Lata features only two male voices, Rafi and the MD. The
hero plays a double role. One role is restricted to the first few minutes of the
film and has a Rafi song picturized on him. The other lasts the entire length of
the film and has a number of songs by the other male singer lavished on him,
this being the first of them.
25 years before Gulzar, bartan was already a feature of Hindi film music -
present both in the lyrics here, and the closing clash at the end of the song.
Song : o beTaa ji, qismat ki havaa kabhii garam
Singer(s) : Chitalkar (C Ramchandra)
Film : Albela
MD : C Ramchandra
Lyrics : Rajinder Krishan
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Aashish : Awesome choice!! I would rate this one as my personal favorite!!!
8. naam khudaa ka le zaraa, sabak shuruu kar bismillah
phuul kaho ya chaand sitaare, khel khilaune pyaare pyaare
miTTi ke ham bane hain saare
If we had two songs with the same prelude, we have two preludes with the same
film. Only, the films were separated by nearly three decades. A romantic tragedy
again. This time composed by a hopeful and aspiring scion of noble stock. The
film, a collaboration with Russian artists and production, did reasonably well,
even musically, but the now prolific composer, despite more successful films
to his credit has rarely matched the quality of output. The song? a few sweet
words of love.
Song : bol de miiThe bol soNiye
Singer(s) : Asha, Manhar
Film : Sohni Mahiwal
MD : Anu Malik
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Response : 10/13

9. naTakhaT taaron hamen na nihaaro
hamrii yeh preet nayi
Think of Madhubala, and her chulbuli "haal kaisaa hai janaab ka" image comes to
mind. Think again and you see the oh-so-beautiful Anarkali with Lata's mohe
panghat pe nandlal. Relatively few Asha songs featured on Madhubala are of the
"romantic" kind. This gorgeous duet, composed by SDB is one. The song is
punctuated by soft castanets all along its duration, keeping time, enhancing
the solitariness of the moments stolen by the lovers.
Song : chaa.Nd saa mukha.Daa kyo.n sharamaayaa
Singer(s) : Asha, Rafi
Film : Insaan Jaag Utha
MD : S D Burman
Lyrics : Shailendra
Response : 12/13
Comments :
Balaji-Malini : What a lovely song
Mohan Rathore : the "soft castanets" that you mention as appearing all along the
song, are only heard during the MukhaDaa.
10. albele din pyaare mere bichhde saath sahaare
haaye kahaan gaye haaye kahaan gaye
aankhon ke ujiyaare meri suuni raat ke taare
haaye kahaan gaye
Where did all those wonderful songs go? Wish we could have those days back
again. An all round genius, angst in heart and a smile on his lips. He made us
laugh, and only rarely did he choose to open up his heart to the world at large.
When he did, beautiful music resulted. Alas, he is gone, resting somewhere in
the shade of those skies he aspired to, and in rare moments like this, achieved.
Song : koi lauTaa de mere biite hue din
Singer(s) : Kishore
Film : Door Gagan
MD : Kishore
Lyrics : Shailendra
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Balaji-Malini : People react to Anandaghan with 'Pity she didn't compose more',
I feel that about Kishore.
11. sangeet hai shakti ishwar ki
har sur mein base hain raam
raagi jo sunaaye raag madhur
rogii ko miley aaraam
If music be the food of love, play on. Here, the music is just a precursor, a
prelude to love. Based on the legend of Vasavadatta and Udayan, this film boasts
another desert-island soundtrack. Again, the soundtrack is studded with several
Lata gems, but this is a Hemant solo, with a Lata duet tandem. The duet version
however, does not have this prelude. In any compilation of film loris, this one
is a must.
Song : chandan ka palanaa resham ki Dori
Singer(s) : Hemant
Film : Shabab
MD : Naushad
Lyrics : Shakeel
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Sami : A comment reg. #11, the wonderful Shabab song, or should I say songs. I'm
not trying to pick nits here, but the clue may be a bit confusing. Yes, the
lines are recited before the HemantK version of "Chandan ka palna...", but they
actually belong to Manna Dey's "Bhagat ke bas me hai Bhagwaan". At the very
least, you should point out that the lines belong to the Manna song as well.
12. tumhaara dil mere dil ke baraabar ho nahin sakta
woh sheesha ho nahin sakta yeh patthar ho nahin sakta
Mubarak Begum was a highly underutilized singer. Again an all-time favourite
soundtrack with some wonderful songs by Lata, Mukesh and Rafi plus this mujara
by Mubarak Begum. She may not care if you never heard this song, but if you did,
you will carry its nectarine sweetness in your heart for long.
Song : ham haal-e-dil sunaaye.nge
Singer(s) : Mubarak Begum
Film : Madhumati
MD : Salil Choudhary
Lyrics : Shailendra
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Aashish : The Mubarak Begum clue gave it away
13. bhool jaana meri wafaaon ko
baksh denaa meri khataaon ko
baksh denaa meri khataaon ko
The tinkling of bells as a camel goes up and down undulating sand dunes. This
image is etched in my memory and I can never separate this song from that image.
A poignant love story, in the best tragic-romantic traditions, the music is by a
talented but less than successful composer. Ah those days, when there was so
much talent, that even the talented were forced to await their turn at the door
of fortune, and these days when the less than talented are the highly
successful.
Song : guzaraa hua zamaanaa aataa nahii.n dobaaraa
Singer(s) : Lata Mangeshkar
Film : Shirin-Farhad
MD : S Mohinder
Lyrics : Tanvir Naqvi
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Tabassum : This is unfair, how do you expect us to remember a song which is
etched in your memory by no p-stat at all???? I am just making random guess
based on your mention about talented and not so successful MD.
QM==>
S Mohinder spoke about this song at the DC RMIM Meet in 98. His description is
available in the meet reports and has been discussed on RMIM in the past.
Balaji-Malini : At '98 meet in DC, S.Mohinder specially mentioned the tinkling
of bells. He evidently considers this a significant piece of creativity.
Lovely effect.
14. zamii.n kaaGaz kii ban jaaye samundar roshanaa_ii kaa
bayaa.N phir bhii na hogaa hamase yah kissaa judaa_ii kaa
A song which many an ardent young Indian in the US has probably sung at one time
or the other. Those across-the-seas engagements, the finally-approved-
vacation... Why, even I was singing this song not so long ago :-) The heart is
after all, a creature of hope. Rafi's singing is stunning. The chorus prefixes
the main mukha.Da with an "ab" which is absent in Rafi's lines. That "ab" adds
poignancy to the lines, heralding the end of a long wait...
Song : chaar dino.n kii chhuTTii hai
Singer(s) : Rafi, chorus
Film : Aas Ka Panchhi
MD : Shankar-Jaikishan
Lyrics : Hasrat
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Prithvi : This gave us a bit of a run. In fact this was the last answer that we
cracked. Had to use brute force...just look up the Rafi songs on ISB one after
the other. This isnt as common a song as the other clues.
15. main woh hansi huun lab pe jo
aane se reh gayi
main woh shamaa huun jo kabhi
roshan nahin huii
Just before Lata's remarkable breakthrough with aayegaa aayegaa under Khemchand
Prakash' baton, there was a void in the space for female singers created by
Noorjehan's departure to Pakistan. And one voice that laid early claim to that
space was Rajkumari's. Bawre Nain was her landmark film, coming a year after
this one. The peak didn't last long, but even thirty years later, her voice was
still resplendent.
This soundtrack has many voices, Lata included and each song is a treat. This
song carries on the sentiment expressed in the prelude, pointing out all those
ironic contrasts that make up the benighted life of the protagonist.
Song : mai.n vo dulhan huu.N raas na aayaa jise {shR^i}.ngaar
Singer(s) : Rajkumari
Film : Mahal
MD : Khemchand Prakash
Lyrics : Nakhshab
Response : 7/13
Comments :
Prithvi : Actually HMV mentions this song with its prelude rather than its
mukhda on the CD cover. So basically the clue was the name of the song as we see
it on the insert.
QM==>
This caused a bit of a problem. A couple of responses just wrote back the
first few words of the prelude itself. We just *could not* give credit for that
even though they probably knew the song itself.
Arunabha : isn't this the name of the song itself ?
Aashish : I think this song is probably Main Woh Dulhan Hoon from Mahal....My
logic behind this is the fact that Baware Nain was released one year after this
movie. well, Baware Nain was released in 1950 and Mahal was released in 1949!!
Balaji-Malini :
[on Rajkumari] Fully agree. It really is a pity she didn't get many chances.
To see how she did vs Lata, one should listen to Anhonee, where they went
head-to-head. It appears in the early 50s Roshan was one MD to use her often and
well, but later even he moved away.
QM==>
Actually, there may be something to do with Kedar Sharma, more than Roshan.
Balaji-Malini : Of course, needless to say, this is just one among the many
treasure from this film. You gave it away completely by mentioning the movie
here.
QM==>
OTOH, mentioning the movie just *might* have created some doubts because of
the obviousness
16. ho gaye do roz me.n aabaad bhii barabaad bhii
ab tamannaa hai ye ki aaye na un kii yaad bhii
An ocean of love turns into an ocean of tears for Mukesh as he laments the
lovelessness of a loved one. The Rajendra Kumar-Mukesh pairing was to be seen
again later in the 60s with Naushad's Sathi, but this early 60s film has music
by Ravi.
Song : vafaa jin se kii bevafaa ho gaye
Singer(s) : Mukesh
Film : Pyar Ka Sagar
MD : Ravi

17. terii kudarat terii tadabiir, mujhe kyaa maaluum
banatii hogii kahii.n taqadiir, mujhe kyaa maaluum
This is a tandem song, composed by the first composer pair in Hindi Filmdom. It
showcases the velvet voice of Suraiya most effectively. The pathos, the longing
and the final crescendo of the clashing cymbals. Sounds like it is a bhajan gone
sour, a plaint against God's wilful ways, the inevitability that draws a moth to
a flame. Both versions of the tandem share the same prelude.
Song : tuune meraa yaar na milaayaa / meraa diladaar na milaayaa
Singer(s) : Rafi / Suraiya
Film : Shama Parwana
MD : Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics : Qamar Jalalabadi
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Prithvi : A very nice inclusion once again. My most beloved sdtrk of HB.
Sudhir : I like a lot, the tabla's beat in this song. Is there a name for this
type of rhythm (like Teen Taal or something)
Aashish : Something interesting I found - If you look at the Suraiya - Hits
Forever CD...this song is rack number 17 AND is also the quiz's 17th question
Balaji-Malini : Suraiya can probably patent the words shama and parwana :).
Starred in 2 Shama's, Shama Parwana and with KLS in Parwana.
QM==>
Just before this quiz was posted, I got to hear Rafi's version. The song takes
his voice to great lengths and I felt that it just broke at the end where he
goes "mujhii ko is jahaa.N se uThaa~" This is a tandem song alright, but the the
opening words are different, as one or two respondents highlighted.
18. karate rahe khizaa se hum sauda bahaar ka
badala diya to kya yeh diya unake pyaar ka
OR
na puuchho pyaar kii humne jo haqeeqat dekhii
wafaa ke naam pe bikte huey ulfat dekhii
kisi ne luuT liya aur hame.N khabar na huii
khulii jo aa.Nkh to barbaad mohabbat dekhii
Another tandem and this time the two versions have different preludes, as well
as different lyrics in the main body of the song. The grandmaster of Hindi film
lyrics, Prem Dhawan conjures this trick. The doctors give Madhubala a year to
live, and a con man is found in Ashok Kumar to try and woo her and grab her not
insignificant wealth. Madhubala being Madhubala, and Hindi films being what they
are, Ashok Kumar falls in love and laments his earlier duplicity.
Song : sab kuchh luTaa ke hosh me.n aaye to kyaa kiyaa
Singer(s) : Talat / Lata
Film : Ek Saal
MD : Ravi
Lyrics : Prem Dhawan
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Aashish : ...not many Ashok Kumar, Madhubala movies
Pavan : The Madhubala factor did help in solving some of the difficult ones...
as I had seen one of the Madhubala song video CD with 37 video songs, quite a
number of times....
19. jalate bhii gaye kahate bhii gaye aazaadii ke paravaane
jiinaa to usakaa jiinaa hai jo maranaa vatan pe jaane
Come 15th August and the TVs and radios erupt with patriotic fervour and this
song finds play once more. A perennial favourite, it features Rafi's liquid
steel vocals. The wonderfully written and composed song marches with measured
urgency, rising to a pulse pounding cresecendo. Most releases of this song have
this prelude although the complete prelude is more elaborate, featuring the
lines
tuu nA ronA, ke tU hai bhagat si.nh kii maa.N
mar ke bhI laal terA maregaa nahii.n
Dolii cha.Dhake to laate hai dulhan sabhii
ha.Nsake har koI phaa.Nsii cha.Dhegaa nahii.n
before the clue lines above; and
jab shahiido.n kii Dolii uThe dhuum se
deshavaalo.n tum aa.Nsuu bahaanaa nahii.n
par manaao jab aazaad bhaarat kA din
us gha.Dii tum hame.n bhuul jaanaa nahii.n
after the lines given above.
Song : ai vatan ai vatan ham ko terii qasam
Singer(s) : Rafi
Film : Shaheed
MD : Prem Dhawan
Lyrics : Prem Dhawan
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Surajit : Somebody came up with this as the answer to one of the clues on my
Trios RJGK. I couldn't figure out which song this was then ... I still can't.
QM==>
Happily, Vandana came through. In fact, Surajit's comments at the conclusion
of RJGK 58 pushed this song up our priority list so that it knocked off a Rafi
song from Udan Khatola.
Mohan : other lines you mentioned are not part of the prelude but are a.ntaraas.
The song picturisation in the movie is so fragmented, I won't be surprised if
some of its audio releases been confusing. But this is how a.ntaraas are-

First love walks in on tinkle toes. A highly successful adaptation of Breaking
Away (1979) cashed on Aamir Khan's boyish looks, Ayesha Julka's limited
histrionic capabilities and Pooja Bedi doing a Marilyn Monroe. Need we say more?
You probably are on to a winner already with this one.
Song : pahalaa nashaa pahalaa Khumaar nayaa pyaar hai nayaa i.ntazaar
Singer(s) : Sadhna Sargam, Udit Narayan
Film : Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar
MD : Jatin-Lalit

Aashish : Probably the easiest of them all.....Pehla Nasha......one thing that
strikes me about this song is the fact that the video was in slow motion while
the song was sung at a normal pace, yet there is lip synch!!! I was impressed!!
As for the music, well, I went to boarding school with Jatin-Lalit!! - sanjeewan
vidyalaya, panchgani and they were good back then and they are good in JJWS!!
Sung by Sadhna Sargam and joined in by Udit Narayan. Udit's voice seems so
perfectly matched for playback on Aamir Khan :)
21. kaashi dekhi mathura dekhi dekhe tiirath saare
kahii.N na man ka miit milaa to aayaa tere dvaare
During the creation of this quiz, there were moments when we thought it could be
too difficult. Then, we looked at all the all-star films included in the quiz
and there was no way these were going to be show-stoppers. Take this film, every
song a popular one, feted and awarded all over and its music imitated till
today. This song is by Hemant Kumar, in the best mischief-cum-loving traditions
of ik baar zaraa phir kah do. This is a declaration of love, all right, but it
is a tease all the same, gentle ribbing and a load of fun.
Song : tere dvaar kha.Daa ik jogii

jo mai.n ro pa.Duu.N to mujhe maaf karanaa
Kishore in his later years acquired a "vazan" in his voice, seen notably in
songs like "o sathi re" and in this lesser known gem. Anand Bakshi comes up with
surprisingly powerful lyrics. Here is Rajesh Khanna, a rich kid rebelling
against his father's wealth and power, determined to strike it big as a singer
on his own. There is Vinod Mehra, his friend and lyricist, dying. And Kaka
sings this song to raise funds for the cure/operation that can save his friend's
life.
giit hii jab na ho.nge to kyaa gaa_uu.Ngaa?
This is his request to his doting audience. Help me save my friend, for it is
only in the threatened sorrow of losing him that I have found the true joy of
living.
Song : jab dard nahii.n thaa siine me.n kyaa khaaq mazaa thaa jiine me.n
Singer(s) : Kishore
Film : Anurodh
MD : Laxmikant-Pyarelal
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Response : 11/13
Comments :
VS Rawat : unjustifiably emotive, the way babul ki duaayen is cited for rafi.
The movie's most popular song "aapke anurodh pe" was better one, but silky "mere
dil ne tadap kar" would have to be the best.
23. dil hamaaraa husn vaalo.n kaa akhaa.Daa ho gayaa
are apane hii haatho.n khud apanaa kabaa.Daa ho gayaa
I bet you will mistake this for SDB's opus, but it is actually a rather obscure
film with music by Kalyanji-Anandji. Throw your mind back to the garden of Eden
and the one fruit of love, that yielded two stricken people in Adam and Eve.
Inspired by that, Shakeel produces some of his best comic verse. Given a comic
situation, Kalyanji-Anandji came up with this Manna De gem. Torn between the
love of two women, Manna De laments his state in this hilarious song.
Song : ek anaar do biimaar
Singer(s) : Manna De
Film : Bazi (1968)
MD : Kalyanji-Anandji
Lyrics : Shakeel
Response : 4/13
Comments :
Prithvi : Wild guess...havent heard the song...got the lyrics of the first line
from an online site and they seem to fit the clue.
Shalini : No clue, but sounds like a fun song and movie!
Surajit : You lose the bet. I didn't (mis)take it for anything at all.
QM==>
:-) Given Bazi, would you make a bee-line for the SDB soundtrack?
24. na jaane mere dil ko kya ho gayaa
abhi to yahiin thaa abhii kho gayaa
One of the most successful soundtracks of recent years, this song is my
(Vijay's) favourite from the film. The "prelude" actually appears three times in
the song. Sung once at slow pace at the beginning, immediately followed by a
faster repetition. Then the main song occurs. After it is all over, the
"prelude" re-appears at the end at the same slow pace. Listen to the soaring
violins at the beginning of the song when the prelude fades out. Like a flight
of birds. Is it Dove? No, silly. It is Love.
Song : ho gayaa hai tujh ko to pyaar sajanaa
Singer(s) : Lata, Udit Narayan
Film : Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
MD : Jatin Lalit
Lyrics : Anand Bakshi

Aashish : Pretty easy to guess, I think.....not many ppl NOT having heard

aaj mere ghar aaye vo priitam jinake liye sab nagarii chhaanii
aaj ko_ii ba.Ndhan naa bhaaye, aaj hai khul khelan kii Thaanii
Yet another landmark soundtrack. I am losing count of the number of all-star
films that are featured in this quiz. A great story line, super lyrics, music to
match and singers who rise to the occasion. Throw in Meena Kumari and Ashok
Kumar's histrionics and you have a complete package. Here, Meena Kumari, the
courtesan is plotting ways of keeping her lover by her side and boy! after
an invitation like that, it is impossible for anyone to walk away.
Song : ai ri jaane na doongi
Singer(s) : Lata
Film : Chitralekha
MD : Roshan

Asha sings this drunken song with gusto. She drags the vowels, slurs on the
words here and there, hiccups most dramatically. If after all this one can't see
that she is only playacting, you must be daft. Our hero is. Step into my
starlour, said she to the annoying gadfly aka Biswajit and he falls right into
the trap. There is some fancy guitar work going on in this song.
A popular soundtrack with one of Mahendra Kapoor's better known hits, the film
shares the same name as another film that set long-playing records thirty years
before it.
Song : aao huzoor tum ko sitaaro.n me.n le chaloo.n
Singer(s) : Asha
Film : Kismat (68)
MD : O P Nayyar
Lyrics : Noor Devasi
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Sudhir : The comments about a film, setting sales records for long playing
records, is probably refering to film: Mahal and its mujra song (aka: Chhun
Chhun Ghungrawa ... Yeh Raat Phir Na) There were only 78 rpm records at that
time. The LPs were introduced by HMV in 1960 (first 10" LP was for film:
Kohinoor (1960) # 3AE 1001 - from 78rpm records) and the first 12" LP is for
Mother India # 3AEX 5001, also from 78 rpm records)
QM==>
The long playing record reference is to Anil Biswas' Kismet which played for
eons in one of the Calcutta theatres. We were not trying to say anything about
LPs!
Aashish : when u said it had the same name as a 30 yr previous film that set
records and couple that with Biswajeet...well Kismat comes right to mind!!
27. manzilon pe aake luTate hain dilo.N ke kaarvaan
kashtiyaan saahil pe aksar Duubti hain pyaar ki
This film had a tandem song with Kishore and Asha versions, and a well known
prelude, but we settled for this lesser known song that is another advertisement
for the vazan in Kishore's voice in his latter years. Kishore seemed to use that
vazan more emphatically when singing for the Big-B, as he does here. It was
shortly after this film made a big hit at the box office that Kishore's voice
was stilled forever. We reach out for the void left by his passing, but our
feet, unable to follow his wake, fail us and our heart is left helpless.
Song : ma.nzile.n apanii jagah hai.n raaste apanii jagah
Singer(s) : Kishore
Film : Sharabi (1984)
MD : Bhappi Lahari
Lyrics : Prakash Mehra
Response : 12/13
Comments :
VS Rawat : It is sad that Bappi Lahiri does not get a mention in this rare all
good album from him.
QM==> He gets an inclusion in this quiz. Probably the only way he can rub
shoulders with the likes of Anil B, Kehmchand Prakash, Roshan etc. Let that be
enough. But this is not even Bhappi's best soundtrack, even with the usual
plagiarizing.
28. har taraf husn aur javaanii hai

daavat-e-ishq de rahii hai sadaa
aaj ho jaa kisii hasii.n pe fidaa

A surprise here as Big-B features in the song, as does Kishore but it is not
Kishore's voice that goes on the Big-B persona. There is an air of celebration
all around, a tempting invitation to fall in love, but the Big-B is grouchy and
he sees nothing to love about love, whatever paeans others might sing to love.
Song : muhabbat ba.De kaam kii chiiz hai
Singer(s) : Kishore, Lata, Yesudas
Film : Trishool
MD : Khaiyyam
Lyrics : Sahir
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Mohan : if there are more than two leading voices in the song, should it still
be called a duet
QM==>
No, a trio as Surajit had explained in the last quiz. For the purpose of the
stats above, we had just clubbed 2 or more into duets. We should have clarified
that, sorry.
29. aur to koi nahin sahaara tuu hi haath baDhaa de
ganga jamunaa ban ke baadal gham ki aag bujhaa de
Madhubala's angelic face and Asha's lament are enough to turn the hardest hearts
into jelly. And these are just clouds. They pour in torrents... The chorus
bursts out "barso re" from time to time and one visualizes a fresh gust of wind
driving the rain into a frenzy... A film with several memorable songs, one song
has had extended play in Chitrahar and features Bharat Bhushan twitching his
shoulders by way of dancing.
Song : barso re, haay bairii badaravaa baraso re
Singer(s) : Asha, chorus
Film : Phagun
MD : O P Nayyar
Lyrics : Qamar Jalalabadi
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Arunabha : OK- I've no idea what this song is. I wonder if I can induce the
quizmaster to give me a point anyway if I praise Madhubala enough :-)
30. soyii kaliyaa.N ha.Ns paDii
jhuke laaj se nain
biina kii jhankaar mei.N
tarpan laage bain
A divine Yaman piece, the only well-known Lata song from a soundtrack loaded
with Suraiya gems. Contrast this to Lata's ik baat kahoon gar maano tum sapano
me na aanaa jaanu tum from Golmal, and you despair at her descent from class to
crass. The sentiment expressed in the two songs is similar, but Lata in 1951 was
several notches above Lata in 1979.
Song : supana ban saajan aaye
Singer(s) : Lata
Film : Shokhiyan
MD : Jamal Sen
Lyrics : Majrooh
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Prithvi : It would be great if HMV could release a CD w/the wonderful
compositions of lesser known MD's.. Md Shafi, GS Kohli, and Jamal Sen would be
sure candidates.
QM==>
Ashok's famous RJGK was an excellent showcase of some of the lesser lights in
the composing arena.
Surajit : "Studded with Suraiya gems" is perhaps a bit of an overstatement. The
three best songs in the movie are this one; a Lata-Pramodini duet; and a
Lata-Suraiya duet. There's also a wonderful chorus battle song--no main singers.
The Suraiya solos are dull.
QM==>
My Lord, note kiya jaaye. Surajit actually speaking up *for* Lata songs.
Balaji-Malini :
Stated another way, Lata in '51 was another Lata.
31. tera Gamkhaar huun lekin main tujh tak aa nahiin sakataa
main apane naam teri bekasi likhava nahiin sakataa
Rajinder Krishan uses this opportunity to express the helplessness of a hero
desperate to wipe away the tears of his loved one, but is prevented by
circumstances from doing so. Very deftly done couplet, this one. And Talat, in a
last hurrah, does justice and more to the song. The song goes on to express
remorse at the reduced circumstances in which the princess heroine find herself.
Only if they could cry together, perhaps the grief would be more bearable.
Song : terii aa.Nkh ke aa.Nsuu pii jaauu.N
Singer(s) : Talat
Film : Jahanara
MD : Madan Mohan
Lyrics : Rajinder Krishan
Response : 11/13
Comments :
Balaji-Malini : If you had used 'mai.n terii nazar kaa suruur huu.N', you
would've had a 3rd clue with one song as a prelude to another (after 1 and 3)
32. kya khabar thi ke mohabbat mein yeh din aate hain
jise hum apna banaate hain woh tarpaate hain
Dilip Kumar-Madhubala appeared in only four films together and this is probably
the first. One film that was later canned might have preceded this, but since it
was never completed, that must remain mere speculation. Madhubala appears as a
frisky rustic girl, with a favorite goat-kid in her arms, and Dilip is a suave
urban lad. Quite a dashing pair, but the film is steeped in tragic overtones and
the then reigning #1, Talat, gives us some great songs. This is however, shot on
Madhubala (hence, not Talat) who is left alone in the village after Dilip has
gone away, wondering where the days of yore have gone, when there was love in
his eyes and music in the air.
Song : vo din kahaa.N gaye bataa jab is nazar me.n pyaar thaa
Singer(s) : Lata
Film : Tarana
MD : Anil Biswas
Lyrics : D N Madhok
Response : 10/13
Comments :
Aashish : Ahhhh Taraana ...awesome songs!!!! song is shot on Madhubala as u
mentioned.....as she offers flowers to Dilip kumar's photo some REALLy REALLY
good songs from this movie.....I got the DVD for this... maybe after the end of
this Quiz I will digitize it in real video format so everyone can enjoy it as
well :)
33. aaj priit ne tod dii bandhan ki deewar
haar maan ke priit se chalaa gayaa sansaar
Demanding composer who gave us such famous nicknames like Shor Kumar and Galat
Mahmood. Mr. Galat features in this duet, though as also in another famous solo
from this film. Geeta and Asha share a same-sex duet, displaying amazing
synergy. All the songs from this film are absolutely wonderful (we are getting
tired of saying that in this quiz, but it is true) and this one goes straight to
the heart, with its innocent reveling in first love. Love is all smiles and the
world spring-decked and the song a drop of fresh dew.
Song : dil me.n samaa gaye sajan phuul khile chaman chaman
Singer(s) : Lata, Talat
Film : Sangdil
MD : Sajjad
Lyrics : Rajinder Krishan
Response : 11/13

Prithvi : If one has heard this sdtrk once, he/she can never forget it.
QM==>
And one can forget Pyasa, Mahal, Chitralekha, Tarana, Phir Subah Hogi...?
Balaji-Malini : Back to back to back Talat, any reason :). Anyway, your comment
for Lata in 30 seems to apply equally well for Talat here "Talat in '51 ....
Talat in '64"
QM==>
As if one needs a reason for Talat! BTW, the quiz was not ordered consciously
34. shahar ki raat aur main naashaad-o-naakaara firuun
jagmagaati jaagati, sa.Dakon pe aavaaraa firuun
A tandem again, but to the best of our knowledge, the female version does not
share the prelude. That is probably for a good reason, it has a different
lyricist! The male version is written by Asrar-ul-Haq who appears briefly in
Pyasa as one of the poets reciting his own work. Asha's version is written by
Harsh Tandon. The film version does much damage to Haq's original poem by
chopping off many stanzas but the film version is still a powerful and moving
song composed by Sardar Malik.
Song : ae Gam-e-dil kyaa karuu.N
Singer(s) : Talat
Film : Thokar
MD : Sardar Malik
Lyrics : Majaz (Asrar-ul-Haq)
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Prithvi : Another MD whose compostions are overlooked by HMV (the others IMO are
Hansraj Behl and Chitragupt)...HMV doesn't come up with a collection of their
songs that is easily avialable(save a rare CS of HBehl's songs, and some
Chtiragupt sdtrks on CDs)
Sudhir : I was not aware the Majaz had also rendered his couplet
(Rudad-e-Gham-e-Ulfat) on screen
There are few other couplets in this film and I was wondering, if you are
aware as to who wrote them: They are:
1 Gham Is Kadar Bade Ki Main Ghabra Ke Pee Gaya
2 Yeh Hanste Huye Phool, Yeh Mehka Huwa
3 Jab Hum Chalen To Saaya Bhi Apna
4 Kaam Akhir Jazba-e-Ikhtayar Aa Hi Gaya
QM==>
1, 2 & 3 are probably Sahir.
Balaji-Malini :
Oops. back to back to back to back Talat :)
You could be right. Don't ever recall hearing a prelude in Asha
version. Is Asrar-ul-Haq same as Majaz, I always thought the words
were by Majaz.
QM==>
Asrar-ul-Haq *is* Majaz. BTW, the quiz is NOT consciously ordered. All
Talat's
songs appearing together is just a co-incidence.
35. rok sakey na raah hamaari duniya kii diiwaar
saath jiye.Nge saath mare.Nge amar hamaara pyaar
And finally, this duet. The female voice sings the lines above, and the male
voice chips in with an aa~ after each line. Once these lines are done, the two
voices, easily among the most talented to grace the world of hindi film music,
engage in an exchange of breathtaking taans, dipping, sizzling and rising to a
crescendo, before launching into the song proper.
The hero and heroine have just met, defying Ulhas' restraining orders and they
hope this moment of togetherness will last all their lives, but the film
ultimately ends in tragedy.
Song : jiivan me.n piyaa teraa saath rahe
Singer(s) : Lata, Rafi
Film : Goonj Uthi Shehnai
MD : Vasant Desai
Lyrics : Bharat Vyas
Response : 13/13
Comments :
Srinivas : When it came to 35,the only possible MD's were SJ & VD. Since it was
mentioned as a Tragedy,we took it granted that it was Dilip Kumar & we couldn't
recall if VD scored music for Dilip. So we went to SJ's filmography & tried
Shikast, Daag etc. Finally it stuck to us that it was afterall a Dilip clone on
whom the song is picturised :)
QM==>
This was presumably before the "brute force" method yielded SJ and Aas Ka
Panchhi

The word is "taare", not "sitaare". Hey QMs! I e-mailed each of you guys
separately about this, *and* said so in my entry ....
-s
Kudos to Vijay and Hrishi for such an excellent quiz!! As a part of my
entry I also tried to get media files for the songs mentioned in the
quiz.
I dont have them all but the ones I got are located at
http://thaxi.hsc.usc.edu/rjgk60
All the songs are in mp3 format with the quiz question number
prefacing the track name.
Enjoy,
Aashish
