I though the subtitles were done in a slovenly manner. There were a few
misspelled words, too many spaces between words, no spaces between words,
missing punctuation. I think it was just laziness on their part.

Anyway, I thing song lyrics are overrated, especially in Indian cinema.
I think the music is the most important factor. I miss the grand musical
scores of yesteryear.

yes, it is called karva chauth. fourth night after full moon in before
diwali.

But didn't they show full moon in the film instead of chauth moon. It
must be the most common mistake in hindi films. How many songs are there
on karva chauth?

Yes, you can make a Top-Ten list of fims/songs in which they show Karva Chauthh
on a full moon. :-) But if you ask the film makers/set designers, how many of
them would be able to tell exactly what shape the moon is when it is
ascending/descending, respectively!

However, the winner is them showing a full moon (in Sangharsh, *ing Akshay
Kumar, Ashutosh Rana, etc.) the night before a Sun Eclipse, which can occur
only on an 'Amaavasya'!

You can't do that yourself? Why? Who did the transation of the 2 songs you
posted earlier? They were nice love songs. Never realized tha they were so
lovely when I watched the movie. Damn, I may have to buy the CD when it is
officially released. I rented most likely a pirated CD the other day, and
the color was no good - keep becoming bluesish and dark at times.

I had been hearing a lot of raba, rabu, rab etc. in many filmy songs. I had
asked here before what does raba mean. Now, I understand that it means god.
But, what is the origin of this word raba? Punjabi?

And, thanks for the translation of shava shava song. Very nice.

Habshi, I'm truly astounded by how uncannily similar this translation
is to the one on www.bollywhat.com.

I'm not a native speaker of Hindi, and I work hard to translate these
lyrics. If you're going to use my translations, at least tell people
where to find more, so they'll visit my site.

Yeah, it is interesting to compare. Aside from the line or two where
I've clearly gotten the translation wrong (that dekhe.n yahaa.n line
is what I'm thinking of), I think that the differences are accounted
for by the different choices we've made: you've gone for literal, I've
gone for "how it would feel in English." I'm starting to do that more
and more now on my site; I used to do the former; I'm still not sure
which is best.

Re: the line with "mai.n tera saaya" -- the phrase x saaya hona is
also a colloquialism meaning for the influence of X to be felt.
Though frankly, saying "I'm your shadow" communicates the same pretty
clearly, doesn't it? ;)

Habshi -- I notice you posted translations on zulm.net too. If you
like translating, and you translate other soundtracks that I don't
have posted at bollywhat.com, I'd be very eager to post them under
your name (of course!) at my site if you'd let me. So many people who
like these films don't understand Hindi, and so few films subtitle
their songs. I just can't keep up with requests.

I have I think been barred on zulm net ! thanks to Faddy , who
put my translation there . One cant copyright a lyric subtitles and
certainly go ahead and put my translations on any web site you want ,
The people at www.ukindia.com have all my translations of other movies
on their lyrics page too and you can copy those to your web site too.
They also have learn to read Hindi and Urdu lessons .

Its preferable to have literal translations because the dance
is to the words rather than the music , so for example in Dulhe Raja
when the song says 'she strikes like a female cobra' , Govinda makes
the gesture of the striking cobra .

No, I ain’t no expert on movies; there are enough filmi hacks
jerking off in our media and you don’t need one more to add to
the wastelands. And the last time I did a film review, for an egg
called Fiza (don’t recall it? Can’t say I blame you!), the
mighty man from TOI, who was its producer, took it so seriously, many
seasons later I still peer uneasily over my shoulders each time I
board a train at CST. I’m hoping young Karan Johar will be a
little more sporting.

Thing is, I think there’s something amiss about K3G (I initially
thought it was a new radioactive substance discovered in a busy chem
lab in Stockholm) that badly needs to be pointed out, a neat little
hoodwink Mr Clever Johar has pulled over our unsuspecting million
eyes.

No, I am not talking about the fact that it is an immensely moronic
film, even if you enter the cinema hall leaving your brains behind,
suspended on the poor usher’s fading torch.

Not even the fact that the blockbuster, as they call it, is based on
the most boring theme of the millennium (rich boy/poor girl) and is
set against the most tacky background of the century (Hindu undivided
family drama), a mule-like cross between Johar’s earlier
venture, K2H2 (eeks!), and his chum Chopra’s colossal disaster,
Mohabattein.

No, I am not even referring to the shoddy performance of its
‘big’ star cast. How Bachchan, of late, has been reduced
to repeating the same gig, film after film; the angry old dad persona
he’s suddenly discovered is getting increasing arthritic, apart
from being totally unconvincing (you often feel the Big B will, in the
middle of a heavy scene, dart an asinine KBC question at you).

How his ‘little’ missus has completely forgotten how to
act, and the poor lady weeps, weeps and weeps more to make up for the
lost skill. The Guddi magic is long gone and Jaya must definitely shy
away from the camera. But in an industry packed with psychophantic
suckers, who’s to bell the cat?

How Hrithik looks so frozen and lost, one wonders if he’s been
spending too much time with one Mr Fardeen Khan, doing naughty stuff.
Never understood how the hunk emotes so well in ad films (Coke!), and
goes stone dry in the features. Of late, poor Beefy Boy is compelled
to doing the mandatory muscle-show, so there’s something to
cheer about in his ‘performance’. Almost like in the
earlier days a Helen had to give the audience a little dekko of the
cleavage, however brief.

How Klueless Kareena tries so hard, so hard, so hard to act, you
almost worry she’ll faint of exhaustion. Poor thing is so
expressionless, Bebo. Bobo. Whatever, looks an ideal co-star for
Hrithik, I’ll give her that.

How Kajol lands up doing the only thing she’s best at these days
(apart from ensuring hubby a great turnout at press conferences to
announce non-starter projects): be a perfect silver foil for Shah Rukh
Khan. And nothing more.

Which finally brings me to the point that seems to have missed all of
us: K3G is an SRK movie all the way, start to finish: the best role,
the best characterisation, the best dialogues, the meatiest moments,
the range of emotions, the obvious appeal of the ousted sautela son.
The entire movie is dedicated to the actor. All the characters revolve
around him, are defined by him or are relative to him. So no, this
magnum opus, India’s greatest, biggest movie, has absolutely
nothing to do with ‘loving your parents’, which is what
the hot director has been going to town with.

K3G is Karan Johar’s tribute to Shah Rukh. And the only reason
so much moolah was sunk into the project, so much hype manufactured,
as many as five mega stars roped in, was to insure Mr Khan against yet
another flop, something that would have destroyed the actor’s
career.

I think K3G is Johar’s Taj Mahalic labour of love for his close
buddy.
