Several additions have been made to this month's calendar. July and
August do not seem to be very active. Note that several events
celebrating Indian's 50th year of independence will most probably take
place in mid August.
The fall calendar is taking shape. ICMC D/FW is organizing a two day
extravaganza with around nine artists over 2 days. Asaad Ali is touring
Texas and T.N. Krishnan is visiting with his troupe that includes a
Ghatam player.

The objective of the information is to inform rasikas of upcoming

Sofia Diaz Deida's Women's Yoga & The Heart of Dance workshop series
is being offered on the weekend of June 7th & 8th (call 442-7938 for
details).
Sofia began traditional study of Bharata Natyam in 1982, and studies
under Srimati Shymala Mohenraj, Sri Ram Das and Sri K. Ramiah, dance
and music masters of the Balasaraswati tradition of Bharata Natyam in
Madras, South India.
"Bharata Natyam is a sacred dance form that has become more and more
secularized in India since the advent of the Western influence," says
Sofia. "As a result, the devotional aspects of the dance are being
lost. I am blessed to be studying with masters who are devoted to
passing on Bharata Natyam in its sacred form."
"Bharata Natyam is the rhythmical interweaving of archetypal sound and
movement acknowledging Consciousness as it is pressed into pure
blessing form. The process of dancing Bharata Natyam is infinitely
humbling and constantly evolves my devotion into a whole-bodily
offering."
Sofia is a gifted teacher and performer of sacred dance. She began
traditional study of Bharata Natyam in 1982. In addition to 15 years
of intensive study of Hatha yoga and numerous sacred movement forms
around the world, she holds a bachelors degree in dance from Mills
College in Oakland, California and also maintains a private yoga
therapy practice.
She has performed internationally at such places as the National
Conference of Indian Art and Architecture, Mysore University, South
India; the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe; the
University of Colorado in Boulder; the University of South Florida in
Tampa; and the Super Radiance Dome in Austin, Texas.
Sofia recently returned to the US from India where she presented a
paper and was selected to perform for scholars, scientists, and
patrons of the arts from all over the world at the prestigious Second
International Seminar of Mayanic Science and Vastu Veda. At this
conference she was given the rare honorary title of "Natya Priya"
(which translates to "devoted exponent of sacred movement") by a board
of India's greatest scholars and patrons, including some of the
highest royalty of India.
