There is an ongoing thread about Hemant Kumar as
a singer. Quite a few Hindi songs sung by the
late master-composer have been mentioned. But I am
sure there are many more such songs in Bengali,
about which RMIMers (like Yours Truly) may not be
aware.
Nearly 15 years back, I happened to see a Bengali
movie on TV (Dordarshan). It was called "Dadar
Kriti" (Brother's Tale, or perhaps Elder Brother's
Tale ?). The film was about a simple young man
from a village who comes to Calcutta. His simple
demeanour evokes scorn and fun. Even the leading
lady ignores him totally. How the townspeople
(including the heroine) realise his true worth
forms the theme of the movie. To me, it was a
simple, heartwarming, "feel-good" movie. There
were a couple of fabulous songs sung by Hemant Kumar
who probably scored the music too. I would love
to hear those songs again.
Can any of our (Bengali) friends (Surajit Bose
--- where is he these days ? --- or Arunabh
Roy) point out some URL where one can listen to
Bengali songs online ?
Another noted Bengali singer was Nandini Sen.
On my last visit to Calcutta six years back,
I had bought a cassette of hers, which contained
some delightful numbers. Any info about her
would be welcome.

And a beautiful chorus song
"palki chole gogan tale"
Not sure if the last two are available online though.

If you are really serious about Hemant's Bengali songs, I suggest buy
the recently released CD "Golden Hour: Hemanta Mukherjee" which
contains some of his best like:
- katodin pare ele ekaTu boso (my favourite)
- kon paakhi dharaa dite chaay
- sedin tomaay dekhechhilaam bhorbelaay
- moner jaanaalaa diye u.Nki diye gachhe (a Salil gem)
- surjo Dobaar paalaa aase jodi aasuk besh to
You may also look for these songs in other albums:

- tumi ele anek diner pare jano briShti elo (a Nachiketa Ghosh gem)
- path haaraabo bolei ebaar (Salil)
- aami jhorer kaachhe rekhe gelaam (Salil)
There are many more. In fact he is to Bengali music what Kishore or
Rafi is to HFM.

loosely based on this.)
- Palkir gaan (another of Salil's great tune for an existing piece of
poetry)

- Raanar (that famous 'Daakiyaa' song composed by Salil; this one is
an amazing composition given the poem; Gulzar mentioned somewhere that
L-P based their 'Daakiyaa Daak laayaa' on this.)
- Sedin Tomai Dekhachilum
Well, that's a huge list. You can spend few weekends on them. My
apologies as I could not visit this site suggested by Ganti before
posting the earlier post. It would be interesting to have feedback on
these songs by someone who is listening to them for the first time.
Here is a sheer delight of a Hemanta melody :
