Song: Ae dil mujhe bataa de
Tu kis pe aa gaya hai
Woh kaun hai jo aakar
Khwaabon pe chhaa gaya hai

Film: Bhai Bhai (1956)
Singer: Geeta Dutt
Music: Madan Mohan
Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan
*ing: Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy

A combined tribute to Madan Mohan and Geeta Dutt (whose
26th death anniversary passed today, July 20). Though this
is not a very representative Madan Mohan tune (more like
an OPN or SDB track, I think), it's a pleasant, nonchalantly
catchy song, quite similar, in general temper, to a host of
other Geeta beauties.

To begin with, I will add the name of Shyama in
the list of actors/cast, for the simple reason
that this lovely song was picturised on her.
The late Om Prakash also played a pivotal role.
It may not be a truly representative Madan Mohan
tune, only in the sense that it is quite simple,
easy to sing and, in fact, quite hummable! It
bears telling that this song had garnered the
highest points in that year's Binaca Geet Mala.
Shyama was among our better-looking stars of
that era. Being left-handed, her dancing gestures
employed the use of the left hand to a much greater
extent than was the case with other dancers, which
set her dancing a little apart and distinctive.
She appeared in some other AVM movies of the period
like Bhabhi and Baap Bete. The film "Bhai Bhai"
had several other good songs, like "Mera chhota sa
dekho yeh sansar hai", a vigorous "Pathani" duet
"Mera naam Abdul Rehman" and "Sharaabi ja ja ja".
Apart from this Geeta song, my own favourite is the
lovely Lata solo "Kadar jaane na,ho Kadar jaane na",
with its Bhairavi-ish notes. I think this deserves
to be called a song more representative of the
special Madan Mohan flavour. If not included pre-
viously, it should be archived in the ATMJH series.

You have snatched words from my mouth. I was hoping to say all this when
i covered 'Barsaat Ki Raat' on RAMLI. Even though we had a breathtaking
Madhubala present in that entire movie, it was Shyama whom i fell for. Right
from the 'Garjat Barsat...' song where she is first seen, it is evident without
doubt from her expression, that she is enjoying her role. Ditto, in this song
for 'Bhai Bhai'. She looks great, has that great smile of her's and her
movements are fluid. Also note the way, she goes solo for a brief moment in
the 'Garjat Barsat....' song, absolutely wonderful.

I saw her around 2 years back in a TV interview. Her face and that smile has
not changed a bit. The interview was taken at her flat which looked pretty
opulent indicating that she was not facing difficult times as some of the
stars (Bhagwan, Bharat Bhushan etc) have. Though it was mentioned in the
interview, i do not remember whom did she marry. Can you provide the info?

regards
Anand

Shyama married the well-known cinematographer Fali Mistry.
He died some years back. He had a flair for photographing
the leading ladies in the most flattering light {pun un-
intended :))}. Just watch Sadhna in "Ek Musafir Ek Hasina"
and you will know what I mean. His brother Jal Mistry too
was a noted cinematographer, specialising in B&W movies.
I have seen the interview you referred to. She is very
well preserved, although she has put on tons of weight.
Financially, she is well off. She has had a very long
career in films, starting out in the late forties.
Even in the early part of her career, she never hesitated
to do negative roles, one of the examples being "Dil-e-
Nadaan" (1953/54) where she gets to marry Talat Mehmood,
but dies in the end, paving the way for him and Peace
Kanwal to be reunited. Incidentally, Peace Kanwal was
also in the movie "Barsaat ki Raat" as Shanti, Madhubala's
friend. A pity, she didn't have much of a movie career.

I remember reading long time ago that Shyama and Fali Mistry lived
together. I don't know if they eventually got married. Fali Mistry
was a superb cinmatograhper, one of his best efforts being 'The Guide.'
