Hi folks
Bahut dinon se ye group padh raha tha par kisi ne gazal ki duniya
ke is samraat kee koi khabar naheen lee. Socha chalo hum hee shurat
karate hain.Aakhir badnaam bhee huye to kya naam na hoga.

For those of you who care, bahadur shah zafar wrote this one while in prison;
he scratched it onto the walls of his prison cell and it was copied down after
his demise.

naa kisee ki aankh kaa noor hoon naa kisee ke dil kaa qaraar hoon
jo kisee ke kaam naa aa sake main woh ek musht-e-ghubar hoon

mera rang roop bigar gayaa mera yaar mujh se bichar gayaa
jo chaman khizaan se ujurh gayaa main usee ki fasl-e-bahaar hoon

parhe(??) faatihaa koi aae kyoon koi chaar phool charhaae kyoon
koi aa ke shamma jalaae kyoon main woh bekasi kaa mazaar hoon

main nahin hoon naghma-e-jaanfizaa mujhe sun ke koi kare gaa kyaa
main bare birog ki hoon sadaa main bare dukhi ki pukaar hoon

naa zafar kisee kaa habib hoon naa zafar kisee ka raqeeb hoon
jo bigarh gayaa woh naseeb hoon jo ujurh gayaa woh diyaar hoon

Ummeed karata hun aap logon ko pasand aayee hogi

I'm not sure about this, but I'll try, naghma=song, and jaanfizaa would be about
good atmosphere ( or mausam ), so it means song about good weather (??)

Here is one by Mirza Ghalib, which I like very much, I don't remember the whole
ghazal right now, I am just posting the version which Chitra Singh sang in
"Rare Gems".

Bas ki dushwar hai har kaam ka asaaN hona
Aadmee ko bhi mayassar nahin insaN hona

kee mere Qatl ke baad usne jafaa se tauba
hai! us dood pashemaN ka pashemaN hona

haif us chaar girah kapde ki qismat "Ghalib"
jis ki qismat meN ho Aashiq ka girebaaN hona

I`ll try to post the complete one sometime later.

Dhawal.

Meanings:
dushwar=difficult
mayassar=possible or feasible
jafaa=opposite of wafaa
dood pasheman=one who doesn't repent
pasheman=one who repents(obviously!!)

Here is another one by Zafar:

Lagta nahin hai jee mera ujdey dayaar mein
Kis ki bani hai alam-e-napayedaar mein

Keh do in hasraton se kahin door ja basein
itni jagah kahaan hai dil-e-daaghdaar mein

Umr-e-daraaz maang ke laye the char din
Do arzoo mein kat gaye do intezaar mein!

Kitna hai badnaseeb Zafar dafn ke liye
Do ghaz zameen bhi na mili koo-e-yaar mein

The sublime rendition by Hafeez Wali Mohammed must be familiar to ghazal
lovers. Music by Saraswati Devi. The EP record was immortalised by
Master Madan's 'Yoon na reh-reh ke hamein tadpaiye' recorded on the other
side. It also has the only other ghazal (I think) by Master Madan that is
available, and Hafiz Wali Mohammed equally good 'Yeh na thi hamari kismet'.

Can someone provide some more info on HW Mohammed/ Master Madan? Also
there is at least one more very famous ghazal by Zafar that I can not remember
anything of. Any more Zafar qalaam?

I wanted to know how many people are aware of the (excellent) damage
MTV Asia is doing to the Desi Music scene. There are two bands
on opposite sides of the great divide(India & Pakistan) that are
riding high on the waves of this great new marketing tool.
The first band is called Indus Creed. Popping up on MTV last year ya
with their song "Top of the Rock" was Indus Creed, before they had urat
changed their name from the original: Rock Machine. The song was not
terribly original; your average heavy pop tune with the bad boy attitude
of the band showing through in the video. Actually the video was more s one while in prison;
impressive than the music, an excellent production and direction using n after
modern techniques and allowing some desiness to show through in the
selection of locations, (some Indian city, possibly Bombay). Other-
wise the band could have been any Western group on the radio in the US, on
to my disappointment. Nonetheless, it was a catchy enough tune that
Rock Machine was selected for the nomination of the rapidly rising
award given for MTV's Asian Viewer's choice. They didn't clinch the
title, but impressive debut,no doubt.
In 1993 Rock Machine took a turn to become more Desi, changing
their name to Indus Creed, and employing some more Eastern elements in
their songwriting and even in orchestration: they used a tabla in the
piece that became another hit video:"A bird on the wing", a very
mellow ballad type of piece, with a social message behind it. The
video again was excellent, with better effects, and the direction
tapping into the mood of the song by choosing to shoot in Black &
White. This time the Indian setting was even more prominent, with
some beautiful children's faces shown in slo-mo. This video got
nominated and then fantastically went on to win the Asia Award from
MTV. They sing in English alone.
Indus Creed is definitely going places. I would appreciate it if
someone would fill in the gaps: Where they are from in India, their
history, albums etc.
Next time, a review of Pakistani rock group Junoon's career on MTV. __________

I believe you are talking about the following ghazal.

Music: Pt. Ghulam Qadir
Lyrics: Bahadur Shar Zafar
Originally sung by: Runa Laila
....I believe this ghazal was sung by Jagjit Singh (or Chitra?) later..

Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thee,
Jaisi ab hai teri mehfil kabhi aisi to na thee..

Le gayaa cheenke kaun aaj teraa sabr-o-qaraar?
Beqaraari tujhe Ae dil kabhi aisi to na thee..

Uski aakhoN ne khudaa jaane kiyaa kyaa jaadu?
Ke tabeeyat meri maayal kabhi aisi to na thee..

Chasm-e-qaatil meri dushman thee hameshaa lekin,
Jaisi ab ho gayi qaatil kabhi aisi to na thee..

Jaisi ab hai teri mehfil kabhi aisi to na thee,
Baat karni mujhe mushkil kabhi aisi to na thee.

Beautifully sung by Runa Laila...I wonder why she stopped singing
ghazals so early...

Another ghazal by Bahadur Shah Zafar.
Fankaar: Shehnshah-e-Ghazal Ghulam Ali

Dard-e-dil dard aashnaa jaane,
Aur bedard koi kyaa jaane..

Zulf teri hai woh balaa kaafir,
Pooch mujhse teri balaa jaane..
Aur bedard koi kyaa jaane..

Bewafaa jaane kyaa wafaa meri,
Baawafaa ho to woh wafaa jaane..
Aur bedard koi kyaa jaane..

Kar diyaa ik nigaah meiN bekhud,
Chashm-e-qaatil hai kyaa khudaa jaane..
Aur bedard koi kyaa jaane..
Dard-e-dil dard aashnaa jaane.

Runa Laila still sings ghazals whenever she goes to Pakistan or comes to
India. She's also been singing some new ghazals.
Well stop wondering because after 1971 she went to Bangladesh where ghazals
are not part of their music, I mean Urdu ghazals(obviously).

By the way I'm glad to know somebody else who likes her besides me.
Otherwise people would just say 'who is that?'.
I adore her and her voice. I think she's been the best singer of all time
in Pakistan atleast. I don't know about Bangladesh. I don't even hesitate in
comparing her to Lata, the unbeatable, only if she continued her urdu music
with the same speed.

Yes, Runa Laila is definitely a good singer. The most popular of
her songs being "Damadam masT kalandar". Atleast I started
to recognize her from that song only. Remember she used to
give a programme on Doordarshan on prime time a couple of
years ago (Well she might have given many such programes,
but this one was again among the more popular ones!).

Could someone post the lyrics for this beautiful, lively
song ?

Damadam masT kalandar, Ali Dum Dum de unDer,
Ho lal meri paT rakhiyo balaa Jhule-lalan ho lal meri....
Sind-di ra.... ..........

Please help completing (I've hardly started!) it.

But comparing her with Lata will be IMHO a bit far-fetched.
(No flames intended. Just my personal opinion!!)
Lata is (or has been) "simply unbeatable".

sorry to nitpick on this beautiful piece of lyric but shouldn't that be
mushk-e-ghubar..meaning mutthi bhar khaak [a handful of ash]..or am i
confused..any comments fellow netters.

thanks for posting this lovely ghazal...i had heard it as the title song of the
TV serial 'Bahadur Shah Zafar' and promptly flipped for it. It was sung to the
tune of another hindi song..

Mujhe tum se kuch bhi na chahiye
Mujhe mere haal pe chod do.

[which movie is this one from??]
