This is at the request of Anuja Kochar who wanted the lyrics of the beautiful
Asha GHazal, "Saba se ye kehdo ke kaliaan bichhaae...". The tune of this GHazal
was composed by the GHazal king Madan Mohan. I really wish there were more
Asha/MM combos, 'cause when it comes to GHazals, I prefer Asha over Lata. It is
a pity that Asha was sidelined by most of the top MD's of the golden era. She
has always delivered the goods when approached on the rare occassion by MD's
addicted to Lata. "BaaGH me kali khili..." (SC), "Ek baat kahun mere piya
sunle agar tu..." (Naushad), "Nikle thhe kahan jaane ke lie..." (Roshan), "Dil
lagakar hum ye samjhe...." (CR), etc. Asha has some wonderful songs with Madan
Mohan as well. A couple of my favourites are "Ashkon se teri humne tasvir banaee
hai..." (Dekh Kabira Roya) and "Jaane kya haal ho kal sheeshe ka paimaane ka..."
(Ma ka Aanchal)
It is ironic that perhaps the most popular Asha/MM combo is the forgettable
"Jhumka gira re, Bareilly ke bazaar me..." from Mera Saaya.
Here's the lyrics of my fav. MadMohan/Asha GHazal. It has a long beher (meter)
which makes it more difficult to set to a tune, but when composed properly such
GHazals do sound great. Also, MM manages to convey the full message of the
lyrics without making the singer repeat the first line of the sher, as is often
done in GHazals. And finally, what makes this song truly exceptional is Asha's
wonderful rendition. The lyrics by Jalaal Maleehabadi add to the overall beauty
as well.

(Info. provided by the pstatsman, Preetham Gopalaswamy, himself)
Saba se ye kehdo ke kaliaan bichhaae, woh dekho, woh jaan-e-bahaar aa raha hai
Chura le gaya jo, in aankhon ki neenden, wohi leke dil ka quaraar aa raha hai
Saba se ye kehdo...
Ye kaun aa gaya dil ko karta ishaare, ke mehki phaza, muskuraae nazaare
Quadam baRke tu choom le ai mohabbat, ke dil ko bahut, unpe pyaar aa raha hai
Saba se ye kehdo...
Ye maana ke mehfil me anjaan hai tu, magar jab bhi tujhse nigaahen mili hai
Mujhe ye laga hai, payaam-e-mohabbat, nazar se teri baar baar aa raha hai
Saba se ye kehdo...
Ye rangin fasaana koi mujhse poochhe, ke tu kaisa pyaara hai kitna hasin hai
Suna thha hasin jinpe karte hain jaadu, tujhe dekhkar aitbaar aa raha hai
Saba se ye kehdo...

Lines for the day:
Baad muddat ke mile to, is tarah dekha idhar
Jis tarah ek ajnabi par, ajnabi Daale nazar
Aapne ye bhi na socha dosti kya cheez hai
Shakeel Badayuni in "Dil lagaakar hum ye samjhe zindagi kya cheez hai..."

Among the less serious numbers, there is "ThhoDi der ke liye mere ho jaao" from
"Akeli Mat Jaiyyo" and of course 2 of my favorite duets "Zameen se hame aasmaan
par biThaake gira to na doge" from "Adaalat" and the lovely (both musically
and lyrically) "Hamsafar saath apna chhoD chale, rishte naate woh saare toD
chale".

Amen to that one. Thank God she did not sing it at her recent concert in
Berkeley.
