Quit films not music, Yesudas tells Lata

By Rosamma Jose

Mumbai, 3 Oct Famous Malayalam playback singer, K J Yesudas, stated here on
Monday that he had not asked Lata Mangeshakar to quit the music world.
Addressing a meet the press programme at the Thiruvananthapuram press club after
receiving the ‘Chlachitraratna’ honour of the Kerala Film Critics Association,
Yesudas said that he had only asked Lata Mangeshkar to stop singing for films.

He said that he himself was prepared to stop singing if anyone could point out
any mistake or errors in any of the songs he has sung. “Let somebody come up
with a courageous and convincing demand, I will stop singing at that very
moment,” he said.

Jesudas said his wish was to die singing. “My guru Chembai Vaidyanatha
Bhagawathar practised music till his death. He died while gulping water during a
pause I would like to have such a death,” he said.

Jesudas, who listed Mohammed Rafi as the singer he most respected, said he still
loved to sing for Hindi films. Hindi film makers had mistakenly thought he was
not interested because he had paid more attention to his studio in
Thiruvananthapuram.

Jesudas pointed out he had been working hard to maintain his voice. “I do my
daily exercises every day. It needs lot of hard work to maintain the voice
quality,” he said.

He observed that singers had little control over the quality of music. It was
the right of the composer. “What we can do is to refuse to sing some songs”, he
added.

He personally was against loud modern songs. Jesudas said he had no plans to
settle down in the United States of America. He said he had stayed there for
some time because of professional compulsions. “It gave me lot of experience,”
he added.

Hmmm...this is a dangerous statement - while he does not sound as worn-
out as Lata Mangeshkar these days, his hold over sur is not what it
used to be either. Is he implying that he has never made a mistake in
any of his songs, because that's just not true. We're not talking about
flagrant "wrong notes" necessarily, but going a little flat here and
there - does that count as a mistake or error?

I can give one example where Yesudas is not just "going a little flat
here and there" but just plain besur. The song is "Kaa karoon sajni". In the
first mukhda of the song, after "khoj rahi hai piya pardesi ankhiyan", he
comes back to "aaye na baalam". That's where he goes out of tune. I don't
know if others have observed it but everytime I hear that song, I just can't
help noticing it. The other times he sings "aaye na baalam" in the song, he
is alright. Anyway, this is not to say that he should quit but just that
someone could have noticed the error and done a rerecording of it.
IMO I don't think anybody out there in the music industry can publicly
say that Lata is besur these days. Though it's the truth, nobody wants to be
seen as doing some mudslinging on the great legend. This is as close as
someone can get to saying that.

"can of worms" is right, Ketan!

What profound love for his art! It certainly deserves respect.
I am sure he is the only musician with such noble sentiments.
No, no, others do not deserve such lofty goals! They should
just quit once they stop being good.
